That Is what the Journalism II class undertook this year when deciding on a yearbook theme. Why not write a letter to the students and faculty of WHS and let them see the 1978 school year through our eyes, feel it with our emotions, and remember it through our pictures and words? A letter is something that you can keep with you forever, reading it many times through a lifetime — reading words that can bring so many memories tumbling out of corners almost forgotten. So here Is our package of WHS '78 for you, sealed with a kiss. 4 Freshmen 1. Oh ... The childish ways of these freshman. 2. Stacie, Amy, and Lisa try to act cool as frosh. 3. That assumption is partially correct, and yet — there comes the time when pages have to be laid out, stories have to be written, copy has to be typed, pictures have to be taken, and that's when you see the real image of journalism students. We have a lot of good times during 4th hour, and there is a common bond holding us all together — our goal is to produce the best yearbook ever put out. A lot of dedica- tion and hard work is put into each yearbook. We are like a football team — busting through the barriers we face, getting enough pages in by the deadline, racing against the clock at times, working together, helping each other. And like the athletes, we have fun doing it. A yearbook is a special thing — our hope is that we have made this treasure of memories a precious one for all of you. 20 1. Disappointment spread over the faces of many after hearing the re- sults of the State competition held in Emporia. Of the 13 entries from Wamego, we received only one I rating. It was not a great year but we worked harder than the ratings show, commented Keith Collett, vocal music director. Besides State competition, the choir presented an all-American concert in the fall. They also presented their 5th annual Feast of Carols at Christmas, sang on WIBW television, attended league vocal clinic, and performed a Spring variety show featuring antique popular music. There were tough times but good times too, and it is the good I will remember, said Mr. Collett. 1. Junior Ensemble, first row, (L to R): C. Farrell, S. Berner, L. Roth. Back row: C. Elder, J. One of the most successful being the Raiderettes. Wamego's new drill team. This drill team had a hard time getting off the ground but with the help and support of Mrs. Doperalski their sponsor things seemed to work out. There were 17 girls who worked all through the school year to make their first year a success. They did a great job. 1. Team Golfers Face Tough Competition The Wamego Red Raider Golf squad exper- ienced an up-an-down season in 1978. Facing very tough competition and dealing with player inconsistency, and extremely poor weather conditions, the team had a difficult time placing near the top in many of the matches. The Red Raider strength was found in the Senior two-man team of Jay Clark and Chris Ceckart, who brought home medals from Clay Center and Council Grove and placed in the top five in four other matches. Juniors Jeff Clark and John Schmidt also had several strong showings throughout the season. The highlight of the season was winning a second place trophy at Osage City for the six-man team total. 1. The squad was minus their top four runners from the year before, but returned lettermen Loren Riblett, David Brazzle, and Pat Worrel. These three runners led the team to a successful season, which many people did not think was possible. Loren Riblett placed first at the league meet; the team took third behind Concordia and Belleville. Tyra Rogers and Debbie Shaver wrote their names in the history books, being the first girls to par- ticipate in Cross Country. Tyra placed high in every meet, in- cluding the league meet, where she won first place honors. The team placed second at the region- al meet, qualifying them for state. The little men with big hearts, as Coach John Harshbarger called them, placed fifth at the state meet. This was a great accom- plishment for a squad not expected to place high in any meet. 66 1. League Champion Loren Riblett. 67 The season started with the Raiders picked to place fourth or fifth in the league. This was the main discussion topic at the football campout held at Pugh's Pond. The team set many goals, the main one being: win the league championship and get into the playoffs. After winning the first two games against non-conference opponents Council Grove and Nemaha Valley, the Raiders found themselves matched against a much larger Chapman team. The Raiders quickly showed who was tougher as they stuck the Irish 22-7. Two weeks later, after beating Concordia, the Wa- mego-Abilene game was labeled the states Game of the Week. The Raiders smashed the Cowboys 38-19 and found themselves ranked fourth in the state. Jay Clark and Ed Noll were named state players of the week. The league championship soon became a reality, as Wamego stomped on Clay Center, Marysville, Effingham and Belleville. The league champs had little time to cele- brate, due to the playoffs beginning three days later. The Raiders were matched against Goodland, and the field was soaked with two days of rain. Goodland beat the Raiders, 18-6, to end the season. The Wamego Red Raid- ers held their heads high, with nothing to be ashamed of. Jay Clark, Ed Noll, Matt Doperalski, Brad Lichtenhan, and Mark Morton made first team all-league. Scott Harshbarger, Steve Cejda, Chris Holle, and Brian Carna- han made honorable mention. Jay, Ed and Mark made all-area team and Jay was named to the 3A All-State team. He was also asked to play in the annual Shrine Bowl Game. 1. The Clock Just Ran Out Too Soon Under the leadership of new head coach Mike Kop- meyer, the 1977-78 Raider Cagers made the season a very respectable and exciting one. Coach Kopmeyer taught the philosophy of togetherness and team love to pull the usually outmanned Raiders from a season low of 2-9 to a greatly Improved 9-11. The slow start was soon forgotten, as the Raiders won seven out of their last nine games. At the mid-season CIT tournament in Topeka, Coach Kopmeyer and the squad reaped the profits of two trophies, (Consola- tion Championship and Sportsmanship Award) and placed Scott Harshbarger and Brad Llchtenhan on the All-Tournament team. John Furney was the leading scorer and rebounder with 239 points (a 12.0 average) and 105 rebounds. Mark Morton was the second leading rebounder with 101 rebounds and had an 8.6 points scoring average. Brian Carnahan lead the team in field goal percentage and overall consistency. Brian averaged 9.6 points a game. Scott Harshbarger averaged 10.2 points a game and pulled down 100 rebounds. Brad Lichtenhan aver- aged 10.0 points a game, and handled the ball superbly under pressure. A great asset to the team were Seniors Raymond Rickstrew, Mark Goehring, and Chris Eckart. One freshmen, Sandra Dearing, set a new school record in the 440 yard dash, got 5th place in the NCKL meet In the 200 meters, and then went to the regional meet to run the 400 meters in a time of 65.3 sec- onds. We feel that you are one of the best coaches at WHS and we shall never forget ya. You gave up a lot of your time and energy for us ... but in our minds it was all worthwhile. We deeply appreciate the things you've done and we will miss your leadership in guiding us to strive for excellence. When girls tennis started three years ago, we never dreamed that we would have the successful team we did this year ... and without you, our dreams never would have been reached. Not many coaches can brag about sending six girls to state In only their third season. You have molded some good tennis players, but you've also helped build strength and character in those who have had the privilege of playing on your team. Even though you hollered and screamed at us, and even kicked buckets of balls over ... we still love ya! 86 Netter's Finish Season Strong, Six Qualify For State A strong performance at the regional meet held at Atchison highlighted the 1978 tennis season. When he announced his plan for leav- ing his position at WHS his shocked students felt a great loss. I enjoyed my years here, Mr. Childs said sentimen- tally. Because of a lot of people this place holds a lot of memories. The New York trip, football playoffs, happy things that I'll never forget. And yeah ... I'd do it all again. Mr. Childs was no ordinary teacher. He laughed and joked with the students. He understood them and was on their level. And yeah ... we'll never forget you Mr. Kids! Exhibits of student's work were set up for public display. Awards for Artist of the Year were given to Tod Machin: Junior Senior artist, and Paul Deweese: Freshman Sopho- more artist. 1. HA! 92 to- Robin And Scott Homecoming '78 The night of January 21, 1978 was crackling with excitement - not only were the Wamego cagers playing the truest invaders of Raider terri- tory, the Marysville Bulldogs - it was also Bas- ketball Homecoming 1978. The crowning of the king and queen was held between the B and A team games. Wamego did itself proud by making the very deserving Scott Harshbarger and Robin Shandy new royalty. The Bulldogs left with a victory, but never the Raider Pride. 94 1. King Scott Harshbarger grins proudly at Queen Robin Shandy. 2. J.6. and Dope. 3. Brian and Hoop. 4. Mort 5. Moose and Banana. 6. Oh Men, Amen On November 18, 1977, the class of 78 performed on the stage of Wamego High's new auditorium. Oh Men, Amen was presented to the public after six weeks of practice. The play centers around a crazy sorority of Philbury College. A reporter for the Philbury Falcon is trying to get a story about the sorority and he goes to all extremes to get it. Mr. Dutton, the director, remarked, Considering the calibar of people involved, the play should be a success. I won't be ashamed to be a part of it. Tony Cartwright ... Diane Dodge ....... From the time you entered the brightly decorated K-State Ball Room you knew this would be a night to remember. The band. Glass Apple, was super, the music loud and the memories ... cherished. The two large box office successes this year were Star Wars and Close En- counters of the Third Kind. Realizing the current appeal of the science fiction dramas, the Junior Class presented a space comedy — Way Out by John Vorn- holt. The plot was based on a family who became disenchanted with the crowded living conditions on Earth, so they purchased their own planet in another gal- axy. Unfortunately, they couldn't afford the best and their planet, Zanzibar III, turned out to be more of a headache than could have been expected. Not only is their planet of questionable value, but it also has several other draw- backs — namely a slightly crazed computer-robot named Arthur and some unexpected inhabitants, in spite of the guarantee that the planet was uninha- bited. In the end, however, all their problem are humorously resolved. The play featured some unusual costumes and a creative set. Those who missed the performance actually missed a memorable experience. 1. Judy (Charlene Farrell) gets a sudden case of moon measles In a plot to stay on Zanzibar HI. 2. Arthur (Chris Holle) enjoys his latest recrea- tional Invention, Arthuretta (Brenda Kastner). 3. Harry (Mitch Holmes) pleads for anything but creamed egg plant or synthetic oysters. 4. Clang, clang, clang, clang ... aliens, aliens! 5. Mrs. Noon (Barb Jacobson), Mr. 009317 (Jeff Clark), and Mr. 582116 (Roy Peters) attempt to settle their disputes over the real estate sales on Zanzibar III. 6. My cone's a mess and I can't do a thing with It! 7. Mrs. Noon (Barb Jacobson) falls into the arms of Harry (Mitch Holmes) after a close encoun- ter with Arthur's force field. And Now It's Time . . . Goodbye May 17, 1978 ... The long and anxiously awaited graduation night. Thanks to a sunny and clear day, graduation ceremonies were held on the football field this year. The band performed Pomp and Circumstance as the graduates marched onto the field, crowded with parents, friends, and relatives. Speeches were given by senior class president, Mark Morton, valedictori- an, Rachel Roth, and salutatorian, Loren Riblett. Julie Hupe and Diana Crllly brought smiles to the faces of many by performing two songs which they had composed for this special occasion. The diplomas were distributed and this marked the end of the graduates years at WHS. 1. The face of Jay Clark shows satisfaction after receiving his diploma. 2. These pages were originally designed to hold the senior sneak pictures but we had a little problem — there wasn't a senior sneak. So we figured these pictures showed a hard-working class of '78 as they sneaked around WHS. 108 The crowning glory of a victorious hard-played game against Abilene on Oct. 7 was the placing of a sparkling tiara on the head of Mary Beth Wte during halftime. It was a game filled with tension, fer both teams were un- defeated, and it was our homecom- ing. The Big Red Machine pulled us through to the fifth straight victory of the season. 1. 1977 football queen---Mary Beth White 2. Candidate Carol Meinhardt 3. Candidate Mary Beth White 4. It's been a good one, and we don't think any of us have re- grets that we were here, together. Like all years, we had our high points to write of and recall happily, and we had our low points to be glad they are past. But it takes both types of experiences to make life, and we are so happy to have shared them with each other in the halls of WHS. 136 Index Adams, D. 71, 99, 130.
