Captains: R. Solt, B. Eckart, N. Doperalski, K. Bradford. 6-2-1 The 1970-71 Football season opened September 17, with the tradional Snake Dance down main street. Coach Lee said his team was ready, but the Braves from Council Grove had a different idea. They had the Raiders stunned from the opening kick-off, and finished off the evening with a 34-16 win. The Braves left the Wamego fans wondering what the rest of the season would be like. They soon found out as the Raiders won, very convincingly, the next five games. For Homecoming, the Raiders took on the Osage City Indians. The Raiders skunked them 31-0. The game was viewed by many alumni as they came for the Homecoming festivities. Linda Herman w as crowned queen and reigned over the victorious game. The four co-captains, Brad, Ron, Nick, and Kirk, had lead their team through some difficult games and the Raiders found themselves tied with Marysville for the league title. They traveled to Effingham to face the Tigers. The game ended in a tie. Then the Raiders met the Marysville Bulldogs and came out of the game with their second defeat, as Marysville stomped them 36-12. The Raiders bounced back though by winning their last game 28-0 and had an overall season record of 6-2-1. At the end of the season, Ron Solt, Nick Doperalski, and Randy Tessendorf made all league team. Kirk Bradford was named Best Lineman, Nick Doperalski was Most- Inspirational Player, Ron Solt was named Best Back, and Randy Tessendorf was Most Improved Player. Brad Eckart won the Southall Award which is in honor of John Southall who was killed in the war. 12 Coach Lee looks over players.
