It was a year packed full of activities. Remember Homecoming? Racing up and down the streets in those convertibles, the huge bonfire at the park, and winning that first game. But--football season passed and winter was with us. (The nicest thing winter occasionally offered was a free day, thanks to the snow.) Winter's winds never kept the Seniors away during the Christmas Holidays and particularly when New Year s Eve rolled around. After semester finals, everyone sighed and plunged into that last lap. The Winter Formal was fun, and then came Basketball Prom night, and of course the Senior Play. The Bus Stops Here” was a big success, thanks to the help of Mrs. Selby. The cast included Barbara Tanner, Steve Huff, John Sumners. Twila Grace, Mary Helen Mertz, Judy Snyder, Larry Lintz, Ray Fairchild, Carolyn Stratton, Bob Sarna and Ruth Ann Moats. After the play the pace picked up for the Seniors. First came the Junior-Senior banquet and prom, next the Senior Carnival, The Wa-Kaw Ball and then a flurry of money making projects to insure that they made it away on the Senior Sneak. Who will dare to forget that trip? And then Graduation activities filled those final days, those neat white caps and gowns, speakers, mom and dad taking pictures like mad, and a few tears falling here and there. But as the old song goes— It's All Over Now!” Here in your '59 Wa-Kaw the staff hopes that the Seniors (and even the underclassmen) will find again that spirit that made this year so great. A 14-12 victory over Council Grove opened the way but was quickly followed by a 14-7, pass-happy loss to Onega. The third game found the Raiders' pass attack improving as they sailed by Hiawatha 27-14. Again defeat followed victory as Haskell's Indians scalped the Red Team 27-14, a reverse of the last games score. Then it was Homecoming at W.R.H.S., but the Vikings of Seaman didn't want to play ball, at least not to make Homecoming victorious for the Raiders. Seaman's 39-18 win was the only blemish in an almost perfect day. With low spirits the Raiders sank under while Washburn and Effingham rolled by without being scored on, 0-20 and 0-26 respectively. The last four losses set the re- cord at 2 and 5 and injuries were plaguing the Big Red. This was the outlook as the Raiders pulled out November 4 for Holton. The determined fight of the Wamego eleven that evening, ending in a 20-14 victory for the Raiders, was a moment fans will long remember. Firmly on their feet the Raiders closed the season with a 52-6 pounding of Osage City. 37 v CAROLYN STRATTON Attendant SHERRY HOSLER Attendant A Seaman Viking trys to decide which way Thomas Seniors win second place in Homecoming float will go. competition. 38 otnecotning tv ila 0KA attendant The Royalty of 1959 take an intermission during the Homecoming .celebration. After six games the team had a 5-1 record and were tied with Osage for the lea- gue lead. Game seven was with the Marriott led five and the Raiders dumped them, breaking their ten game string. But, the rest of the league was not afraid of giant killers. Seaman and Washburn hosted the Wamegoans and both emerged victors. Sacred Heart, after defeating the ■ Raiders once at the Salina Invitational, made it three in a row with a second win on their hard woods. The rest of the season was victorious except for the fatal return engagement with Osage City. This time Marriott could not be bottled and the final score read 73-61 for Osage. Final league standings found Wamego and Seaman tied for second. These two teams handed Osage their only losses of the season. District Tournament play brought the year's record to 11-8, as Immaculate and then Wash- burn dropped the Raiders. Performing at Homecoming and at the Wa Kaw Ball the modern dance girls had a busy year. Mary Helen Mertz directed the Home- coming performance, a tribute to the king and queen. She was the featured soloist in the number. For the Wa-Kaw Ball two numbers were developed under the direction of Mr. Dellinger. The floorshow number gave an interpretation of street urchins playing 'round a fountain in Rome. A special number in- troduced the coronation ceremonies. It started with Mr. Anderson singing Three Coins in A fountain then the girls were helped by Bob Sarna, B.J. Eichem, Steve Huff and Larry Griffin in performing a romantic-story dance. The story told of four statues that came to life after drinking from the fountain modern dance girls entertain twice ... .and so did Jenny Nelson, Freshman, and Karen Geyer, Sophomore. 52 Mary Helen Mertz, Senior member and soloist, is pictured in the costume worn for Homecoming.
