Spirit mania strikes again October 22, 1984, was not a usual Monday, it was the beginning of the 25th Homecoming Week of S.P. Waltrip Senior High. Homecoming Week entails many activities, most of which are geared to raise spirit for the game against our archrival, Scarborough. Preceding this week each class met weekly to paint signs that they would decorate our halls with. On the Fri- day before this week, a dance was also held to start our celebration! On Wednesday students showed their spirit by dressing up in appropriate costumes assigned to them by their class officers, Freshmen clowned around, Sophomores got their revenge as nerds, Juniors bummed, and the Seniors dressed accordingly for career day. Thursday was another day in which the students were able to show their elevated spirits, Freshmen put their clothes on inside out and backwards, Sophomores showed athletic spirit by dressing for all sports, Juniors came as beach bums, and the BIG BAD SENIORS came dressed as old folks. as-W' t i ste - at WW ,...-we Q Q D W X is E 'A t 45 i N A , at ' s , Q t xx 1 2 F- F .,.f '5 . Spirit is defined as an enthusiastic loyalty. Waltrip definitely fits this definition as we show this quality in more ways than one. This year our football team - the Waltrip Rams - were chosen to play the first game of the season in the Astrodome. The reason for this was the competiveness of our team along with the over- whelming crowds we attract. We draw the second largest crowds in the city and the largest crowd at Delmar. On game day, the colors red and grey are worn by everyone including teachers and principals. Waltrip students participate in pep rallies by cheering ' right along with the cheerleaders. In fact, students find it hard to be seated before doing Bat- tle Cry - the cheer in which students cheer for their respective classes. Waltrip students definitely display spirit at it's BEST! In ,Bu N , ,, - - ras Thursday, school ended early, not because of the students' choice, but because of the rainy weather. However, we returned three hours later to hang the signs we painted previous to this week. While we were hanging the signs, all streets bound- ing the school flooded, but this did not DAMPEN our spirits! Friday morning students arrived decked out in their red and gray to support the Rams! A pep rally was held in the auditorium in order to an- nounce the top seven finalists for both Homecoming King and Queen. Then several of the Cheerleaders, Ramhandlers, and Class Officers carried the spirit chains across the stage. The spirit chains are an annual contest to see which class has the most spirit based on donations by class members. In the spirit of tradi- tion, the Seniors won again! Student Life 17
