Walton-Verona High School Walton, KY 1988 DAWN J Dedication Ann Wethington The 1988 DAWN staff is proud to dedicate this edition to Mrs. Wethington whose consistent and selfless devotion to her students and to THE DAWN will always be warmly remembered. 2 7 ? s «.3 - - r; We Had Fun In 1987-88 At W-VHS U.S.A. In many ways every year of high school is a special experience. Yet, 1987-88 was a most extraordinary year. Athletically, on the course, the court, the field, the Bearcats were out- standing. Academically, too, W-VHS scholars brought distinction for us all. But beyond these things, ’87-88 pro- vided us the chance to celebrate, re- lax, and have some fun together. We hope that paging through this volume will help you relive and re- member some of the good times at W- VHS this year. 3 (Right) Are we having fun yet? Marlene Willet appears to be asking Kevin Kuntz. (Below) Jeanne Clinkenbeard does her best Pee Wee Herman impression. (Above) Cindy Moore whoops It up for the seniors of ’88. (Right) Cincinnati Bengal Mike Martin tries to convince Junior Brewer to Just Say No. 4 Together — Just For The Fun Of It! Classes, books, studying, tests, homework, homework and more homework. These were a definite part of our days and nights in 1987-88. When it was time, we all worked very hard. But we played hard, too. Between the classes, teachers, and hours of study, W-VHS kids found time to get together, to laugh, play, and simply have fun doing whatever we wanted. There were ball games, parties, dances, and movies. We always had time to have fun and celebrate life together. (Left) Behind the sunglasses are Robert Strunk and Michelle Fountain. (Right) Even during class, W-V kids can usually manage to grin and have a little fun. (Below) Melissa Fry and Amber Cozine seem to realize that sometimes you just need a little hug from a friend. 6 One School, Many Faces: We Shared The Joy! “Life’s tough!” we’re often told. “Only the strong survive.” We’ve heard it a thousand times. It’s true: life is a drag sometimes. But the tough times are easier to take if you can share them with friends. By the same token, the good times are sweeter if they’re shared. We did a lot of sharing in 1987-88. We shared the excitement of those first days of school — before the drudgery set in. We shared the fun of pep rallies, ball games, dances, Hal- loween, Hawaiian day, Homecoming, the Prom. We cheered championship performances in Scholastic Challenge, cross-country, basketball, baseball, and track. In victory and defeat, in cheering and weeping, we were always togeth- er. Many experience the joy of being together and having fun for the brief time they are seniors. Rare classes have all three. Seniors like the class of 1988, for example. Even as underclassmen, the seniors of ’88 seemed to display a certain pride. Even then they were DOERS, not watchers — in sports, in class, in life. Above all they always wanted to have fun — together. The kind that brings people closer and makes them friends, forever. And we followed — not always willingly — where they tried to take us. Sometimes we liked where they took us, sometimes we didn’t. But without them where would we Followed be? Disorganized, confused. Nothing would ever get done. There would be no dances, no class parties, no proms. We owed them a lot in 1988. And they owed us — everything! After all, without us, the common herd, who would there be to lead? (Top) Tony Roberts checks out some figures in Accounting class. But also like an engine it requires a great deal of attention for smooth operation. At W-VHS the faculty, staff and administration worked hard to grease the wheels and oil the cogs. Whatever the job — driving, cook- ing, typing or teaching — the goal of the staff was always the same: to ed- ucate W-VHS students. Pain, Persistence It was a long, painful season for the 1988 Bearcats, with injuries rampant. But as their 18-11 record indicates, the Cats were a tough and determined bunch. Among their accomplishments: win- ner Huntington Bank Tip-Off Tourney, runner-up Newport Catholic Tourna- ment, final four of Class A Classic. (Above) Boyd Stewart goes up for an inside jumper. (Above) Sophomore Brant Poore was the team's top rebounder as well as a consistent scoring threat. 53 54 Cheerleaders Fire Spirit The 1988 Varsity and J-V Cheer- leaders were, of course, an energetic and spirited bunch that provided the spark for the blaze of school spirit that burned all season long. But they were also a prize-winning group in their own right. Early in the summer, for example, the Varsity team won the camp trophy for Up- and-Coming Squad. Later, in March, the squad won 1st place in 33rd Dis- trict KAPOS competition and 3rd in the 9th Region. Cindy Maddox was named All-Region Honorable Mention and Steve Anderson was named All- Region. It was a sparkling array for Christmas and for Homecoming 1987-88. The twenty-two candidates for Homecoming court were equally be- decked in their finery. Then the results of voting by W-VHS students were announced. The Homecoming Court consisted of Prince Doug Robinson, Princess Donna Sams, King Bart Noe, and Queen Cindy Maddox. “Crownbears” were Benjamin Moore and Robyn Sams. The ’Cats lost to St. Xavier in the first round of the sectionals in Lexinton. Receiving the Coaches Award were co-MVP’s Darren Poore and Bart Noe, both of whom were also named All- District and All-Regional, along with teammates Lennie Whalen and Brant Poore. But the ad- dition of several new players, things turned around quickly. Reeves sited the appearance of Chuck Marksberry, Scott Spillman, John Rhoades, and J. R. McCubbin as “an added dimension” to his only re- turnee, Daryl McElroy. The result was a record of 8-13-1 for the season. Individual honors went to Most Val- uable Golfer, Chuck Marksberry. While it is necessary to earn a varsity W-V to become a member of the Lettermen Club, the only requirement for mem- bership in the Pep Club is a desire to support and yell for the Bearcats. Along with the Cheerleaders, the Pep Lettermen Clubs staged a snake dance and bonfire pep rally to kick off the basketball season. The theme, set by the motto “In dreams and love there are no impos- sibilities,” was echoed in the song “In My Dreams.” A starry atmosphere was also mirrored in the black and silver color motif the juniors used. Revelers snacked on caviar, ramaki and other exotic goodies. Finally, it was time to name the Prom court. Attendants were Elaine Humphrey, Jeanne Clinkenbeard, Kel- lie Mace, Brian Miller, Tony Rapp, and Tony Bresser. Prince and Princess were David Kaelin and Teresa Vaske. King and Queen were Brian Robinson and Shanel Wartman. (Top) 1988 PROM COURT: Princess Teresa Vaske, Prince David Kaelin, Queen Shanel Wartman, King Brian Robinson. Graduation 1988 Commencement 1988 ceremonies began with the traditional playing of Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance.” After Father Paul Krebs of All Saints Church brought the invocation, the W-VHS Band played selections from “A Chorus Line.” The main address was brought by Dennis Rich, a graduate of W-VHS and president of the Fifth Third Bank of Boone Co. The themes of Mr. Rich’s address echoed the thoughts expressed earlier by Valedictorian Rachel Owen and Sa- lutatorian Dione Riegler: “Have en- thusiasm,” “treat others as you would be treated,” ‘‘Set goals,” and “Always ask the best of yourself.” Finally, Mr. Rich said, “You must make the decision, the sacrifice, to make yourself a success.” He urged the graduates to continue their ed- ucation. “For the education process never ends. Always be willing to learn.” (Above) Pride, happiness, and relief are all ev- ident on the faces of Kevin Ross, Mike Merida, Kyle Kees, and Charlie Reynolds. At any commencement there are always mixed emotions. When the Class of 1988 gathered on May 27 to remember, to wish each other well, and to begin the life for which the past twelve years had prepared them, it was a night filled with happiness and sadness. After all, as Salutatorian Dione Riegler said in her address, “We have had many treasured memories and ex- periences here for the years to come.” Leaving is never easy. And to go with the contrasting emotions of joy (Above) Valedictorian Rachel Owen shed a few tears during her adddress. (Right) The traditional turning of the tassel is a big monent for Terry Sallee, Tina Sechrest, Traci Huffman and the rest of the class of 1988. and sadness, there must be some fear, too. “I feel frightened,” Valedictorian Rachel Owen admitted in her address. “But fear makes us more conscious and aware.” Mostly, though, there was pride. “I have tremendous faith and confidence in the class of 1988,” Rachel said. “I have pride in my class, my classmates and my friends.” It was a night of contrasting emo- tions. But in the end there remained only the joy of fulfillment. 92 (Left) Solemn-faced Kevin Ross marches to the (Below) The faces of the graduates register the rhythm of “Pomp and Circumstance.” varied emotions of commencement. And under ideal conditions it is necessary to rely on the good will and patience of a great many people. But when bad luck or unforeseen problems arise, the understanding and aid of others is even more vital. Such was the case in 1988. Thanks must be extended to a number of people without whose help this year- book could not have been completed: — Mr. Bob Storer whose constant op- timism and support fueled our determi- nation. — The W-VHS faculty and staff for their infinite patience and encourage- ment. — Our patrons, advertisers and bene- factors. — The seniors of 1988 whose gen- erosity will be treasured always. Best Wishes! THE DAWN STAFF
