Walton-Verona High School Walton, Kentucky THE DAWN We Come; 2 Dedication ..  Mr. Uyne has been a member of the faculty for six years. He has added a vital part to our school. He has organized our band and chorus, both of which do a wonderful job. He also teaches Music Appreciation. Because of the wonderful progress he has brought our school, we proudly dedicate the 1967 Dawn to James Layne. Candid Shots Teachers in action after school! Better hurry before the bell rings. An unusual class — Everyone is working! Mr. Shoemaker serves Walton-Verona as High School Principal. This is his fourth year. BLACK A. ROUSE Treasurer 6 Language and Social Studies Mrs. Beighle teaches Psychology, English 9 and 11, and Speech and Creative Writ- ing, and is the sponsor of the cheerleaders. She received her A. B. degree from Asbury College. Mrs. Douglas serves both schools very well as Librarian. She received her A. B. from Eastern Kentucky University and her M. S. from the University of Kentucky. Mrs. Baker teaches French I and II and Eng- lish 10 and 12. She also sponsors the Y- Teens. She received her A. B. from East- ern State College. Mr. Smith teaches Social Studies. He re- ceived his A. B. from Eastern Kentucky University and M. A. from University of Kentucky. He also is in charge of the Ac- tivities Fund. 8 Math and Science Mr. Franks teaches Algebra 1,11 Math I,II, Geometry and Trigonometry. He received hisB.A. from Georgetown and him M .A. from the University of Kentucky. Mrs. Stephenson teaches General Business, General Science, Bookkeeping, and Health and P.E. She received her B.A. from Georgetown. Mr. Carroll teaches Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This is Mr. Carrolls' first year here at Walton. He received his B.S. from Morehead State University. Mr. Tillery teaches Physiology, Health and P. E. and coaches the 5th and 6th and Jun- ior High basketball teams. He received his B.S. from Eastern. Vocational and Music Mrs. Tillery teaches the business courses. She also sponsors the Yearbook. She re- ceived herB. S. degree from Eastern. Mr. Saylor teaches Industrial Arts. He re- ceived his B. A. from Eastern Kentucky University. Mrs. Combs teaches Home Economics. She received herB. S. from the Univer- sity of Kentucky. Mr. Layne teaches Music Appreciation and directs the school band and the Chorus. He received his A. B. from Eastern Ken- tucky University. 10 Junior High Faculty Mrs. GUI teaches the seventh grade. She received her B.S. from Georgetown Col- lege. Mr. Tyler teaches the seventh grade and is assistant coach to our varsity and junior varsity basketball teams. He received his B.S. from Union College. Mr. Stephenson teaches the eighth grade. He received his A.B. from Eastern State College. Mr. Taylor teaches the eighth grade and Driver Ed. He also coaches our varsity and junior varsity basketbaU teams. He re- ceived his B.S. from Campbellsville Col- lege. II Shelley Kendall and Bernie Spen- cer were winners in an Essay spon- sored by the Disabled Veterans, the title was Handicapped Work- ers--Community Assets. Bernie won 2nd place and Shelley won 3rd place in Northern Kentucky District. Joella Sleet and Dennis Chipman were selected as the winners of the DAR award. They were chosen from the Senior class by the faculty. They were selected on the basis of good citizenship. The award is presented by the Boone County Chapter of the DAR. Martha Robinson won the Spelling Contest for the 7th grade and Cindy McMillian for the 8th grade. These two competed and Cindy won. She then went to Woodward High School for a written test, then to C, G, E. for the Ken- tucky Post and Times Star Spelling Contest. She ranked fifth place and won a Lincoln Library. Shelley Kendall was the winner of the Betty Crocker, American Homemaker of Tomorrow award. She won this award on the basis of a test on which she received the highest grade. The local win- ner competes with other schools for the State Betty Crocker award. Bernie Spencer was selected to represent our school in Select Band. Bernie competed with stu- dents from Northern Kentucky Schools. The Select Band held a concert at Boone County High. Donna Webb was the winner of the Soil Conservation Essay Con- test. It is sponsored by the Louis- ville Courier Journal and the Louisville Times. The school sponsor was Mrs. Beigle. The title of Donna's essay was Soil Conservation and It's Effect On Our Community. 13 These girls attended Girl's State for one week at U.K. They were selected by the teachers on the basis of leadership, scholarship, and health. They learned Parliamentary Procedure and studied Kentucky's government. From left to right are Judy Shields, Vicki Logsdon, Shelley Kendall, and Joella Sleet. Girl's State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Boy’s State was held at Eastern State College. Like Girl’s State the boys studied the government of Kentucky. They set up townships and elected mayors, town councils and visited police court in Richmond. From left to right are Donnie Afterkirk, Bernie Spencer, David Milner, Tony Richards, and Jimmy Robinson.
