Who would ever have ThoughT ThaT aT one Time WalTon High School was a single room wiTh hardly mpre Than a dozen sTudenTs? Mary WalTon, who was The wife aT General Lewis Morris, one of The signers aT The DeclaraTion of Independence, sTarTed a school in her home To educaTe her own and neighborhood children. This kindly woman and her husband lived in The Morris Mansion on Willis Avenue: however, Wal- Ton's TirsT real home was on ST. Ann's Avenue and One l-lundred ForTy-FirsT STreeT. A number of years laTer, The school was moved To The old Evander Childs building and Then, Tinolly, To The beauTiTul school we now know as WalTon. lf we could go back To RevoluTionary Days, we would see a chain of TorTresses overlooking The Kingsbridge Valley. The guns of The largesT TorTress, Number Four, were aimed aT The siTe which our school now occupies. Sfill laTer, The horse racing in Jerome Park drew large weekly crowds from The surrounding neighborhood. Some Time aiTerward, The ciTy purchased The properTy where The reservoir is now locaTed. whence zephyrlike breezes blow merrily around WalToniTes' hair on cool days.

Under slarry skies, a crescenl moon, and soll lighls in Gym I, she dreamily danced lo lhe lheme song, Slardusl. The Gym seemed a lar cry lrom lhe spol where she wenl lhrough lri- weekly gymnaslic loils, ll Mr. Gromyko, during one ol his slrolls, had chanced lo slop al Wallon, he would have been pleasanlly surprised lo learn lhal she was cemenling American-Rus sian relalions wilh her gracelul inlerprelalion ol his nalive Troika. ln February, she lraded her huge unwearable olh lerm bullon lor lhe seven's key lhal was lo open lhe door lo her senior year. Il seemed lhal luck was againsl her as lar as picnics were con- cerned because she was again rained oul. Bul having gone lhrough seven lerms ol Hloughening up, she and some ol her more slurdy lriends braved lhe winds, lhunder and slormy seas on lhe Slalen Island lerry lhal look lhem lo Clove Lake Park. There lhey showed all lheir rowing abilily in waler-lilled boals and lried lo build a lire wilh wel LOGS. Sevenlh lerm also broughl lhe merry lunes ol lhe Pirales of Penzance, posing belore cameras lor Periwinkle piclures, ordering senior iewelry and hals, choosing her senior cel- ebrilies, and making oul college applicalions. Finally lhe day when she was an Eighl ar- rived, bringing wilh il unlorgellable memories. Never will she lorgel lhe hilarily ol Red Leller Day, when she lrolicked lhrough lhe halls. In lhe evening lhe Besl Years ol Our Lives were depicled in lhe sparkling class nighl salires. These. however, were bul lhe beginning lo never-lo-be-lorgollen senior evenls. Nexl came lhe Senior Prom, where Eppie, as a sophislicaled senior, proudly displayed her Prince Charming. And now, every lime Eppie chanced lo glance al a sprig ol ivy, she could nol and would nol lorgel lhe solemnily ol her own Ivy Day. The climax ol lhe lerm came wilh learlul senior music and lhe ever lriumphanl gradualion .... The lasl llakes ol snow were scllly drilling and melling inlo lhe nighl as Eppie's reminiscing came lo an end. She realized lhen, lhal lhough snowllakes may vanish, her memories ol Wallon would remain wilh her lorever.
