T-low well remembered was ThaT day when she eagerly sTared aT The seemingly massive build- ing ThaT was To be her home for The nexf year. l-ler firsT few weeks There broughf many adiusf- menTs lbeing direcTed To The boiler room in search of The cafeferia aT The advice of some good naTured educaTed freshman was buT onel. buT soon she found herself really enioying school. AfTer parTicipaTing in WhiTe ElephanT Sales, War Bond Rallies, kniTTing of afghans, sal- vaging of paper, and successfully complefing a course in garbage disposal of N. Y. C. Eppie, Too, became one of Those illusTrious beings, a Two. This meanT being able To reserve Ten seaTs on The Special Bus, and being able To give good naTured advice To innocenf freshmen. JusT as she was able To really call The Annex her home, her happy reign as a Two came To an end and her Thoughfs Turned To The Main Build- ing. The same vague fears she had felT as a firsT Termer reTurned as she again gazed aT an even larger building. Inside, iT suddenly dawned on her ThaT all WalTon boys wenT To Clinfon. ln Third Term, Eppie unknowingly aided The war efforT wiTh The pile of cuT slips she accumulaTed, before some senior informed her ThaT, yes, The Nafaforium was The swimming pool. ThaT Term again, Eppie volunTeered To ioin The G. O., and in refurn was able To view her hearT Thrab, Mr. Alan Ladd, in China. The focf ThaT The movie proiecTor broke down regularly every half hour did noT dampen her joy. Towards The mid- dle of The Term. however, a conTrasTing noTe was sfruck by The irreparable loss of Franklirv Delano Roosevelt She realized The irony of life when ToTal vicTory was achieved a monTh aTTer his unfimely deafh. ln fourTh Term, The skaTing parTy proved To be a huge success, and she was firsT infroduced To somefhing she would remem- ber always wiTh regreT-RegenTs. l'ler iunior year sTarTed wiTh The Waves leav- ing l'lunTer and wiTh The U. N.'s coming To Take Their place. As The enTrance was guarded by a plaToon of handsome marines, she soon realized how much This inTernaTional organizciTion was helping The world iand WalTonl. BUT, ThaT semes- ler, her lillh lerm picnic was poslponed because ol circumslances beyond her conlrol-rain. The G. O., in an ellorl lo console, presenled Jane Eyre, and lhal lerm loo, lhe Choral Club pre- senled The Mikado. In lillh lerm she was linally caughl by Wallon's Trallic Marshall, lrying lo go up a down slaircase. By sixlh lerm she was sullicienlly recovered lo go lo her Junior Prom. Under slarry skies, a crescenl moon, and soll lighls in Gym I, she dreamily danced lo lhe lheme song, Slardusl. The Gym seemed a lar cry lrom lhe spol where she wenl lhrough lri- weekly gymnaslic loils, ll Mr. Gromyko, during one ol his slrolls, had chanced lo slop al Wallon, he would have been pleasanlly surprised lo learn lhal she was cemenling American-Rus sian relalions wilh her gracelul inlerprelalion ol his nalive Troika. ln February, she lraded her huge unwearable olh lerm bullon lor lhe seven's key lhal was lo open lhe door lo her senior year. Il seemed lhal luck was againsl her as lar as picnics were con- cerned because she was again rained oul. Bul having gone lhrough seven lerms ol Hloughening up, she and some ol her more slurdy lriends braved lhe winds, lhunder and slormy seas on lhe Slalen Island lerry lhal look lhem lo Clove Lake Park. There lhey showed all lheir rowing abilily in waler-lilled boals and lried lo build a lire wilh wel LOGS. Finally lhe day when she was an Eighl ar- rived, bringing wilh il unlorgellable memories. Never will she lorgel lhe hilarily ol Red Leller Day, when she lrolicked lhrough lhe halls. In lhe evening lhe Besl Years ol Our Lives were depicled in lhe sparkling class nighl salires. These. however, were bul lhe beginning lo never-lo-be-lorgollen senior evenls. Nexl came lhe Senior Prom, where Eppie, as a sophislicaled senior, proudly displayed her Prince Charming. And now, every lime Eppie chanced lo glance al a sprig ol ivy, she could nol and would nol lorgel lhe solemnily ol her own Ivy Day. The climax ol lhe lerm came wilh learlul senior music and lhe ever lriumphanl gradualion .... The lasl llakes ol snow were scllly drilling and melling inlo lhe nighl as Eppie's reminiscing came lo an end. She realized lhen, lhal lhough snowllakes may vanish, her memories ol Wallon would remain wilh her lorever. Who would ever have ThoughT ThaT aT one Time WalTon High School was a single room wiTh hardly mpre Than a dozen sTudenTs? Mary WalTon, who was The wife aT General Lewis Morris, one of The signers aT The DeclaraTion of Independence, sTarTed a school in her home To educaTe her own and neighborhood children. This kindly woman and her husband lived in The Morris Mansion on Willis Avenue: however, Wal- Ton's TirsT real home was on ST. Ann's Avenue and One l-lundred ForTy-FirsT STreeT. A number of years laTer, The school was moved To The old Evander Childs building and Then, Tinolly, To The beauTiTul school we now know as WalTon. lf we could go back To RevoluTionary Days, we would see a chain of TorTresses overlooking The Kingsbridge Valley. The guns of The largesT TorTress, Number Four, were aimed aT The siTe which our school now occupies. Sfill laTer, The horse racing in Jerome Park drew large weekly crowds from The surrounding neighborhood.
