CRATC A SLATE R. SKINNER, in the stiff, tight, black suit which he wore to church on Sundays, glanced at the nine graduates who sat on the two sides of his large wooden desk. Peering over his steel-rimmed glasses, he smiled at the proud parents in the back benches and began to speak. As Mary Ellen sat stillly in her new white dress, her face the pic- ture of concentration, she looked at the little seat in the schoolroom where she had spent the last six years. She remembered when she had first scratched sums and multiplication tables on the small slate with a squeaky pencil, she remembered how she had spent long hours copy- ing manuscript in a very line hand. She wondered whether she could recall the words of the little poem she had worked so hard to learn last year: Abou Ben Adhem, may his tribe increase, Awoke one night . . With a tug at her heart, the past years came rushing by. She traveled to Arcadia, where Evangeline lived, she remembered the Village Bluff:- smitlz, Poe's Raven and Bryant's Tlzmzatojnsis. I have shot mine arrow o'er the house, And hurt my brother. Mr. Skinnerls melodious voice inter- rupted Mary's thoughts. But this too was familiar. Of course, yHamIel.' Don't you remember? The large clock at the back of the room struck twelve. Mary Ellen, thinking of the good food that awaited her at home, was led to another memory - the school picnic last spring. Mfhat fun that had been! She recalled the tree planting on Arbor Day, and . . . Mr. Skinner took his glasses from the tip of his nose and everyone began to gather himself together for this meant that the schoolmasterys speech was drawing to its end. After Mary Ellen had said good-bye to her friends, as if that too were for the last time, and turned down the road to her house, her mind strayed back to the deserted schoolhouse which already seemed small and inadequate. She thought of other schools which would be newer and larger, she could almost see other students in new and strange costumes who would enjoy their close friends and happy times, she mused on boys and girls who would experience the same wonder and delight at being exposed to learning. Before her eyes passed countless generations of scholars - all different, all alike. BERNICE SCHWEITZICR
