I LIKE THE YOUNGER GENERATION Much To The delighT of youTh, Dr. William Lyon Phelps championed iTs cause by remarking, YouTh possesses mosT of The beauTy, grace, self- assurance, and energy of The world. Mary Ellen Chase also wroTe, l like The younger generaTion. On The oTher hand, has iT noT been said of youTh again and again ThaT iT is reckless, foolhardy, easily swayed, per- versely loyal, and disposed To Too much gaieTy? Those very qualiTies for which youTh has been mosT severely con- demned are acfually iTs virTues. Of The charges of recklessness and foal- hardiness, liTTIe can be said as These are merely Terms which have been applied To youTh for The lack of beTTer words wiTh which To describe iTs inherenT and somewhaT heedless gaieTy. Wordsworfh apTly phrased This Thoughf in his lines, Many are our ioys in youTh. ThaT The young can be easily swayed cannoT be doubTed: buT once moved, however, iT mainTains an inTensely loyal aTTiTude Toward The beliefs iT cherishes. WhaT has The younger generaTion chosen To uphold? YouTh believes in democracy as a form of governmenT, in The ideals of free speech, free press, freedom of religion, and freedom of assembly. IT regards keenly anyThing relaTing To The governmenT of The UniTed STaTes and ThaT of oTher counTries. Wifness youTh's inTense concern wiTh The presidenTial elecTion and The foreign and dornesTic issues connecfed wiTh iT. Erika Mann, upon her arrival here from Germany, commenTed favor- ably on American youTh's greaT inTeresT in governmenT. There is con- creTe evidence of The younger generaTion's aTTiTude Toward The demo- craTic way of life here in Walfon, where members of The G. O. Council are elecTed by The sTudenT body. Only These represenTaTives have The righT To deTermine financial appropriaTions and school acTiviTies perTain- ing To The General OrganizaTion. The principle of a free press is ex- emplified by The school publicaTions which are open To conTribuTions from all sTudenTs. When confronTed by a desperaTe war emergency, an inTensely loyal, paTrioTic youTh rose swifTly To meeT The siTuaTion. The enormous sums collecTed for sTamps and bonds, The quick enThusiasm in aiding The Red Cross, NaTional War Fund, STudenT Aid, and salvage col- lecTions-all These prove youTh's generosiTy. YouTh has faiTh-faiTh in ifself, faiTh in man, and faiTh in God. Indeed iT is good ThaT in This world of Temporal Things, youTh has been endowed so prodigiously wiTh These divine virTues of faiTh and hope, for Tomorrow's world depends on The sTrengTh of Today's younger generafion.
