ELIZABETH ZITOWSKY Sing to drown your cares and the cares of others. PHYLLIS ZWEIFLER In her studies does Phyllis excel, And everything else she does just, as well. IRMA ZWICK Here are three cheers tor Irma Zwick, For in her studies she is quick. 54 GOOD NEIGHBORS FOR FOUR YEARS () ' lliiil we cipproacli llie vnd of llic Paii- al- toiiian I li ' jliway. il is [)lcasanl In rc-minisco and recall experiences encounlerecl on our journe ' . Tlie G. i). parU ' in lirsl term paved the a - for a happy frcsli- inan xcar at ihe annex, but when we came to the main huildiiii;. we were I jlli[)iilians enlerinu llie do- main ol lirolxlinonag: however, we grew tucustomed to the size of the huilding by the reservoir, and were soon SLifliciently in the swim to participate in Wal- ton s Aquacade, inspired b ' a pleasant trip to the World s Fair! Fourth term rolled ofT to a good start with our ga - skating part ' and the in- stallation ol a new Irafiic s ' stem. with up and down staircases, express and local. It was at this time that we learned (much to our chagrin) that sopho- more is derived from a Greek word meaning foolish one! Our pride was pricked, but not completeK- dellated. We still were able to enjo - the C tirtain Gallers presentation ol , l iVc in W ' oihU ' ihind and we left our sojihomore ear still chuckling over the comical antics ol white rabbits and irate duchesses! nd so into lifth. where a new t pe of term activity— old-time movies in the auditorium— was inaugurated. That ' ear s highlight was, of course, the .Junior Prom. Gym One was decorated in Gay-Nineties style with six chiibbx- ru|)ids beaming at us as we glided over the floor to the strains ol . Birvch ' Hnill or Two. Modesty forbids our divulging the resLill of the faculty-student baseball game at Clove Fake Park, scene of the seventh term hike. A bright spot of that term was the gala perfomiance ol Gilbert and Sullivan s The Gon(h hi ' rs. in w hirh our glee club displayed superb histrionic ability. We began our scrap campaign at that time too and carried it on with patriotic vigor in our senior term. he proceeds from the facull)- show. Monday flower sales, Friday cake sales (we really went all-out eating cake lor the cause), the White Flephant Sale, and the Pan-American show, were contributed to our Red Cross fund. Even Class Night was made a paying affair. Our goal was to collect $6,000 with which to bu - three hospital-e(|uipped station wagons. Our traditional Senior Prom was relinquished for the cause that strives to presen ' e the American spirit of friendship and neighbodincss which we have enjoyed throughout our years at Walton. If there were some who shed a tear or two at lv - Day s sentimental cere- mony, it is understandable, for only graduation remained between us and the end of the Pan-Waltonian Highway to the wodd outside. The world has never had greater need or young women trained to take an active part in its allairs. There is a de- mand for women in every field— agriculture, science, industry, business— women to replace the men who are hghting to protect their homes and ideals and the homes and ideals of their neighbors! Prejudices are cast aside; barriers are broken down: limitations on u omen are scrapped. 1 heir opportunity has come, but they must be capable of meeting it. Walton has prepared us to take our place in the world of alrairs by educating us in specilic subjects and b ' giving us a chance to learn democracy by prac- ticing democratic procedure in our student goxernment, clubs, and other activi- ties. We have learned here to appreciate the merits of sound leadership by being encouraged to select our student representatives with discrimination and to carry out conscientiously the duties of those positions to which we ourselves have been elected. A star to guide the student ship of state is Simon Bolivar. We admire him as a leader in the concept of Pan-American democracy. Bolivar, who is the George Washington of South America, began the revolution against Spain which gave five nations birth, commanded the armies which won their freedom, formed their governments, and wrote their constitutions. His words are re- peated by illiterate peons and Indians, and South American statesmen doff their hats at the mention of his name. This man was the very embodiment of all the qualities w hich are essential in leaders of all kinds— courage, detemiina- tion. foresight, confidence, humor, wisdom. 1 le swore that he would free his countrymen from the chains that boimd them to Spain. His [jrojihetic vision was clairvoyant as judged from subsequent history. He urged the building of the Panama Canal and the formation of a great union of American republics to stand as a bulwark against the decadent philosophies of the old wodd. We are not all destined lo hv Bolivars, it is true, but if we utilize to the fullest possible extent the l)asic training in leadership that we received in Wal- ton, and add to that the admirable characteristics of personality possessed by such men as he. we shall be (|uite well ecjuipped to ser ' e efficiently a world w hich will need much good steering to right her on her course in the future.
