Whatever years are allotted to each of us. no one ever knows ahead of time; that is one of the “sweet mysteries” of life. One thing is certain, however. When a moment passes, it is gone for- ever, and nothing can recall it. So it is with your high school years. Seniors, only memories now. For some these memories are tender and warm; for others bland, neutral, perhaps un- pleasant. What is it for you — a special teacher who encouraged you when you needed it most; a reward you received for excellence; a football bowl victory; a league or sectional champion- ship; a 6-A rating in a music contest; that time or times when you got into trouble; a special mo- ment with a friend at the prom; or ? In Shakespeare’s words, “What’s done cannot be undone.” Your years at Walton High School are now frozen into the past, and you now look to the future which is to be seized aggres- sively so that your lives will be filled with time well-spent and years well-lived. Too often we spend so much of our lives ‘ in between times” — a foot in the past and a glance to the future But the time that counts most is the present moment. So live it the best you know how. In doing so, you will “redeem the time” and live a life of contribution and satisfaction. Best Wishes Always, Wendell E. Spear O'Neill High School Principal June 1987 marks twenty years of my association with Walton Central School, and 1 welcome this opportunity to share my observations of WCS along with my brief message for this year’s graduating class. Time has been good to this institution we call Walton Central School. Over the years we have had a number of personnel changes — board members, superintendents, principals, teachers, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and others. During all these times, the school has endured and. yes. also has progressed. I believe this is due. not to the popular belief that the institution is stronger than the individual, but due to the high quality of the individuals who make the institution function along with the support of the community. One of the criteria of a successful school is a high degree of community support and the stability of that community. This community has provided the resources necessary to support our program, and it has been appreciated. I remain optimistic that WCS has positioned itself well for a graceful upcoming entry into the next century when this year’s graduating class wil next year’s incoming kindergarten students will graduate in the year 2000. My hope is that this year’s graduates are successful in w hatever they choose todo—knowing full well that w ishing w ill not bring success, but persistence and planning, and desire will. The greatest error would be in giving up. Be positive in all you do and you will be astonished at how short a time it takes for wonderful things to happen. Robert H. Holstead Townsend Elementary Principal 1 be in their thirties. It is interesting to observe that 19

ADMINISTRATION George F. Mack. Ph.D. School Superintendent Years from now in a moment of repose, on a weekend, in a barracks or college housing, on a bench or a beach, perhaps in a far-away land, you'll reflect on that experience known as Walton. A gentle smile will crease your face, a sense of well-being will return. A sigh and memories of friends, faces, and good times will be yours. We believed that you would rather be challenged to become better than for us to take it easy on you. We believed that even when you complained. Your head ached, your eyes strained, your back broke, you studied, you worked out, you crammed, you pushed, you did it. You showed us CRUSH POWER, academic prowess, athletic ex- ploits, kindness; you enthused us. We talked of knowledge, manners, and good behavior. We bored you. You learned. Thank you for untold kindnesses you gave quietly to others; you counseled lovers; smiled at haters; you made things better. We believed that you were capable, that you could be champions, and you were. You learned that academic success will come only after long hours of study; athletic success only after double sessions and exhaustion; friendships only after effort, tears, and hard times. Now Class of '87, exit is imminent. You once were spectators. You became participants. You contributed to the tradition; soon you'll be part of the legacy. Can the Class of '88, or for that matter, the Class of 2000, improve on the SAT scores, show greater kindness, WIN a championship? Only they will tell us. Class of '87, you’re not as noisy as you once were. You move with greater certainty in the halls. You smile more readily. You speak with clarity. You're gentler than you once were. Class of '87, thanks for everything you gave to Walton; the world awaits you. We await reports of your deeds.
