The 1987 Warrior Walton, New York All to Myself All to myself I’ll find the way Back to each golden yesterday. Thinking of when I’ll be able to stand With my graduating class, hand in hand; The picture seems half-true, half-dream And 1 keep its color and its gleam. All to myself my friends, do you? Count all the memories softly, too. Summer and Autumn, Winter and Spring The hopes we cherish and everything? They make my blood rush through my veins And I keep the joys and the pains. All to myself 1 think of you. Think of the things we used to do. Think of the things we used to say. Think of all those high school days. Sometimes I laugh and sometimes I cry. And I keep those memories, you know why! Adapted by John Jones from “All to Myself’ by Wilbur Dick Nesbit A Night 4 Special In Heaven 5 6 Special Once in a great while, a group of people can get together and do something really spectac- ular. That’s what the Class of 1987 did when they put on their Junior Prom. Who can explain the feeling of walking down the softly illumina- ted corridor, posing with your date at the Stair- way to Heaven, or entering the gym through Heaven’s Gates? Granted, it wasn’t absolutely perfect; the goldfish probably didn’t have a thrilling evening, and the chaperones were none- too-pleased with our mini-fire. But all in all, when you ask someone in the Class of 1987 what their favorite high school memory is, you can bet they’ll answer “My Junior Prom.” Senior Court King: Mike Howland Queen: Prince: Larry Underwood Jim Applegate Jim Budine Princess: Richard Cady Joe Maggiore Scott O’Dell David Russell Brian Sparling Junior Court King: Tom MacGibbon Queen: Prince: Craig Kauppila Curt Bailey Shane Egan Burel Gomillion John Jones Dan Roach Mike Sheldon Matt Smith Princess: Tracy Knapp Tina Benson Kris Babcock Selinda Hansen Annette MacGibbon Jackie Mills Rhonda Phoenix Ronda Tall man Kelly Watts Stephanie Taylor Tina Bowker Dawn Boffemmyer Chcri MacGibbon Angie Mills Christy Mittcer Heather Sheradin Kim Stanton Carla Whitaker Homecoming ’86 Saturday, October 4. 1986. Friday’s continual downpour (great weather for float- making) stopped early Homecoming morning, much to Mr. Backus’ relief, and the parade marched ahead right on schedule. Back at the high school, the sun was actually shining as the float winners were announced: 1st place: Class of ’89 “Defeet the Yellow Jackets 2nd place: Class of '91 “Squash the Yellow Jackets” 3rd place: Class of ’87 “Exterminate the Yellow Jackets.” 8 Homecoming '86 Next on the day’s schedule — Warrior Football. Coach Hoover and the Warriors did a fine job defeating the Oneonta Yellow Jackets, and the Coach even showered for the Dance — with the help of his team! Mother Nature also cooperated; a gloomy day became brighter and warmer in time for the Victory. At half-time the Pep Band gave its usual GREAT performance and then Dr. Mack, official Homecoming Half-time emcee, introduced the 1986 Homecoming Court, escorted by their parents: Dawn Boffemmyer Tina Bowker Cheri MacGibbon Kriste Merwin Angie Mills Heather Sheradin Kim Stanton Stephanie Taylor Carla Whitaker And Night 10 Homecoming '86 Then at 8:00 p.m. the 1986 Homecoming Dance began to the music of WAAL’s Chris Gordon. At 10:00 p.m. Coach Hoover, emcee, re-introduced the Court and their es- corts. Miss Jodie You- mans, 1985 Queen es- corted by Coach Breuer and Coach Backus, crowned the 1986 Homecoming Queen, Kriste Merwin. After a toast to the victo- rious Orange Crush, the Queen and her court led the Royal Dance, and Homecom- ing ’86 became a memory. Every photographer’s nightmare . . . A strange phenomenon has overtaken the peaceful Delaware County area known as Walton. Random photographs shown here capture the prevailing look around one school campus as documented by a variety of cameramen. Ph.D. School Superintendent Years from now in a moment of repose, on a weekend, in a barracks or college housing, on a bench or a beach, perhaps in a far-away land, you'll reflect on that experience known as Walton. A gentle smile will crease your face, a sense of well-being will return. A sigh and memories of friends, faces, and good times will be yours. We believed that you would rather be challenged to become better than for us to take it easy on you. We believed that even when you complained. Your head ached, your eyes strained, your back broke, you studied, you worked out, you crammed, you pushed, you did it. You showed us CRUSH POWER, academic prowess, athletic ex- ploits, kindness; you enthused us. We talked of knowledge, manners, and good behavior. We bored you. You learned. Thank you for untold kindnesses you gave quietly to others; you counseled lovers; smiled at haters; you made things better. We believed that you were capable, that you could be champions, and you were. You learned that academic success will come only after long hours of study; athletic success only after double sessions and exhaustion; friendships only after effort, tears, and hard times. Now Class of '87, exit is imminent. You once were spectators. You became participants. You contributed to the tradition; soon you'll be part of the legacy. Can the Class of '88, or for that matter, the Class of 2000, improve on the SAT scores, show greater kindness, WIN a championship? Only they will tell us. Class of '87, you’re not as noisy as you once were. You move with greater certainty in the halls. You smile more readily. You speak with clarity. You're gentler than you once were. Class of '87, thanks for everything you gave to Walton; the world awaits you. We await reports of your deeds. BOARD OF EDUCATION Row 1: Mrs. Mary Tweedie, Mrs. Bonnie Nowak, Mrs. Joanna Richardson, Dr. Chris Huyck, Row 2: Mr. Gary Grayson, Mr. Gary Dreibelbis, Mr. Duane Merrill 18 Administration Whatever years are allotted to each of us. no one ever knows ahead of time; that is one of the “sweet mysteries” of life. One thing is certain, however. When a moment passes, it is gone for- ever, and nothing can recall it. So it is with your high school years. Seniors, only memories now. For some these memories are tender and warm; for others bland, neutral, perhaps un- pleasant. What is it for you — a special teacher who encouraged you when you needed it most; a reward you received for excellence; a football bowl victory; a league or sectional champion- ship; a 6-A rating in a music contest; that time or times when you got into trouble; a special mo- ment with a friend at the prom; or ? In Shakespeare’s words, “What’s done cannot be undone.” Your years at Walton High School are now frozen into the past, and you now look to the future which is to be seized aggres- sively so that your lives will be filled with time well-spent and years well-lived. Too often we spend so much of our lives ‘ in between times” — a foot in the past and a glance to the future But the time that counts most is the present moment. So live it the best you know how. In doing so, you will “redeem the time” and live a life of contribution and satisfaction. Best Wishes Always, Wendell E. Spear O'Neill High School Principal June 1987 marks twenty years of my association with Walton Central School, and 1 welcome this opportunity to share my observations of WCS along with my brief message for this year’s graduating class. Time has been good to this institution we call Walton Central School. Over the years we have had a number of personnel changes — board members, superintendents, principals, teachers, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and others. During all these times, the school has endured and. yes. also has progressed. I believe this is due. not to the popular belief that the institution is stronger than the individual, but due to the high quality of the individuals who make the institution function along with the support of the community. One of the criteria of a successful school is a high degree of community support and the stability of that community. This community has provided the resources necessary to support our program, and it has been appreciated. I remain optimistic that WCS has positioned itself well for a graceful upcoming entry into the next century when this year’s graduating class wil next year’s incoming kindergarten students will graduate in the year 2000. My hope is that this year’s graduates are successful in w hatever they choose todo—knowing full well that w ishing w ill not bring success, but persistence and planning, and desire will. The greatest error would be in giving up. Be positive in all you do and you will be astonished at how short a time it takes for wonderful things to happen. Robert H. We attempted to use the wood shop for a while, but with limited, mixed results. We completed the regular match schedule using match nights for practice. Although the team could not rebuild without facilities, several individual shooters improved their match skills and had successful shooting. Going from 6-4 to 2-8 is a disappoint- ment, but, under the trying circumstances, just competing was satisfying. Several new shooters tried out, and the potential for next year is promising. Advisor. 1 A Farmer's Solemn Vow By Melvin Harrington “Why do you farm,” folks ask me, “If the future is so bleak? Why keep on losing money? Go find new work this week. Yes, seek another job, my boy. The idea is not alarming. Go find a life you can enjoy And forget about this farming ’ I glance up and a dove swoops down, A sun ray fills the air; My children run across the field Free and laughing, without care. My heart quickly swells with love, A tear runs down my cheek; Could I forget I have no much? My faith must not grow weak. I look at them; they'll never know. Nor will they understand The joy, the pride, the peace I feel When standing on this land . . . My day is done, the house is still. It’s time to get some rest. I look around my farm with hope: How much I have been blessed ... 1 126 Activities YOUTH AGAINST CANCER Row I: Mrs. M. Mugglin. Advisor. K. Mcrwin, K. Constable. A. Mills, J. Hulbert. P. Shoemaker. THE GOOD American Nicholas Daniloff, a journalist for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested on the streets of Moscow and accused of spying on the Soviet Union one week after Gennadiy Zakharov was arrested, (cont. next page) NICHOLAS DANILOFF 140 '86 Review . . . In Review They call it “crack” on the East Coast and “rock on the West Coast. Whatever its name, this refined, smokeable form of cocaine may be the most addictive narcotic ever sold on the streets of America. In the Fall of ’86 a scandal hit the White House. National Security Council’s Col. Oliver North had sent millions of dollars from the Iranian Arms Deal to Nicaraguan rebels. North’s boss, John Poindexter, was implicated, as were White House Chief of Staff, Donald Regan and CIA Director William Casey. President Reagan fired North; Casey resigned due to health problems, and Poindexter also resigned. At press time the in- vestigation continues. Zakharov, a Soviet U.N. employee was ar- rested on a subway platform in New York City and charged with spying. Both men were released within weeks and the entire affair set the stage for a superpower Summit meeting in Iceland. GENNADIY ZAKHAROV 141 A drought spread throughout the Southeast during 1986. It was the worst dry spell on record. At the peak of the drought, crop wilted from southern Pennsylvania all the way into northern Florida. Even after some rain, many farmers in the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia were on the brink of ruin. THE UGLY, and Two Arab terrorists stormed Istanbul's main synagogue on September 6, killing more than 20 worshipers with submachine-gun fire. When police arrived, the terrorists detonated hand grenades and killed themselves. U.S. Air Force and Navy jets attacked five targets in- side Libya under cover of darkness in April, deliver- ing a response to what President Reagan, called the “monstrous brutality” of Libyan-backed terror- ism. (Among the targets was this Libyan Naval Academy, located in a suburb of Tripoli.) 142 ’86 Review THE SPECIAL October 27 — SWEET VICTORY — New York Mets Gary Carter is lifted in the air by relief pitcher Jesse Orosco follow- ing the Met 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the seventh game of the World Series at New York's Shea Stadium. Among the celebrities who died in 1986 were singer Kate Smith on June 17 at the age of 79; Benny Goodman, the King of Swing, June 13; James Cagney, one of Hollywood’s fa- mous toughguys, March 30 at the age of 86; and Ted Knight, best known for his role in the television series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” on August 26 at the age of 62. Screen legend Cary Grant died in December at the age of 82. Although he never won an Oscar, he was the recipient of a 1970 Academy Award for his work. 143 Otfv r r nj l c. Cos' -«-A.
