warn EI6HTy-TWC IN REVIEW Walton Central Jr.-Sr. High School Walton, New York 1 Our yearbook staff is proud to pre- sent Eighty-Two in Review, a theatrical and somewhat sentimen- tal look at our school, our students, and the roles we all play. We especially thank each one of you for setting the stage, providing the scenes, and making our production a success. Lights! Camera! Action! We learned that the first time he walked onto the stage. What we didn't know, though, and what he taught us over the next couple of years, is what BIG means: to look at people and see how much they can do and not bother about their weaknesses; to see obstacles — not as ogres — but as crying cowards that topple when confronted with guts and hard work. But most of all, he taught us that BIG is a generous, cheerful, confident principal we could have to look up to ... for always. So, we dedicate this 1981-82 Deja Vu to the BIG man who helped us all to become a bit bigger. SPECIAL GUEST STAR 4 5 Graduation was memorable for all of us. Brenner High School Principal Mr. Wendell E. Spear Understudy to High School Principal understudies take over I would like to extend my congratulations to the Class of 1982 from Walton Central School. It seems like so many years ago when you were sophomores, and I was the new principal. Now that your graduation is at hand, I can only be with you in spirit as I assume my new position in the West Genesee Central Schools. When we started together, there were so many things to be done. You had three years of high school, and I had my first principalship. Many things have changed during this time; good athletic teams, suc- cessful music programs, new curricular studies and a renovated building without a breezeway. School pride and spirit has continued to grow with enthusiastic com- munity support. I have been lucky in my career, and Walton Central has given me many fond memories. The community, staff and students have always been supportive. The Class of 1982 has played an important part in my happy memories about Walton, and I wish you all the very best. Peter M. Brenner Mrs. loan McCranaghan Understudy to Dean of Students Mr. Robert Holstead Townsend School Principal 19 Walton Central's teachers are as unique as Walton Central itself, and they deserve a raving review. At times they are a bit strange, wearing strange hats, sunglasses, and moustaches, and trying to look like rock singers, outer space beings, sailors, movie stars, and historical figures. What most of us didn't seem to remember was that being a 7th Grader was a pretty tough job. Everything was up: the principal, teachers, lockers, library shelves, drinking fountains, office and lunch counters, and of course, all the other students. But instead of letting up get them down, the 7th Graders used their energy to become an active part in Homecoming, the Christmas assembly, the Winter Carnival, and other school activities. Management of the 7th Grade Class was handled by: Cheri MacGibbon, president; Richard Robinson, vice president; Glenda Thompson, secretary; and Craig Kauppila, treasurer. 37 EIGHTH GRADE M. Allen ). Being an 8th Grader was almost as difficult as being a 7th Grader, only you were a year older, a year wiser, and probably a few inches taller. This was a year of inbet- weenness . You were not beginners, but you weren't old pros either. The 8th Grade Class focused its energies on selling pins and baked goods, and on proving they were not the little squirts everyone made them out to be. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A STAR... After making it through two years of Junior High, being a Freshman sometimes felt like starting all over again. The years ahead looked incredibly long and tedious, and up- perclassmen often saw Freshmen as being immature and naive. But the Class of '85 proved all this to be quite the contrary, as they forged ahead to leave their impression on the minds of Walton High. Selling carnations for Christmas, as well as St. Valentine's and St. Patrick's Day, added a touch of spring to those long winter months, and made us realize that Freshmen were people, too. 45 SOPHOmORES A. You mans LET THE GOOD TimES ROLL Management of the Sophomore Class was handled by: Alexander Adam, president; Mary Hafele, vice president; Stephanie Watson, secretary; and Matt Budine, treasurer. Sophomores started their year off with a total team ef- fort at producing a float that would take second place on Homecoming Day. Excite- ment mounted when students filled out orders for their school rings, only to have to wait for their junior year to place them on their fingers. And of course, if you happened to see some strange people in pigtails, diapers, or short dresses (with hairy legs), you knew that once again the Sophomores defied the Emancipation Pro- clamation and sold themselves as 24 hour slaves to raise money for future class activities. 49 JUNIORS K. Young 52 THESE ARE THE BEST OF TlfTlES Management of the Junior Class was handled by: Bob Pacenza, president; Bob Backus, vice president; Chris Hulse, secretary; and Tami Closs, treasurer. Juniors felt like old pros as the third year of their high school career began. They began raising money — their largest task — in September. Busy Juniors sold light bulbs and cookies to raise funds for one of the highlights of the school term — the Prom. Open Arms by Journey was this year's chosen musical theme, and June 12th marked a very special day. The Juniors organized the committees and did the decorating for the big event. By the end of June, Juniors were looking for- ward to that most honored title of Senior. 53 Stunt people 55 FOOTBALL On brisk and often rainy autumn Saturdays, hun- dreds of avid Walton fans poured into the stands to cheer on the Orange Crush as they whipped Whitney Point, stomped Sidney, grounded Greene, ostrasized Oneonta, shook-up Sher- burne, and wiped out Windsor. Because of our team's success, we went on to play Tioga for the class c championship. Although we came home tasting the bitterness of defeat, we also sensed a victory. In our hands we held trophies, proof of our achievement. In our minds we held a lesson well-learned. And in our hearts we still held our precious gift given to us by Mr. Hoover, that famous Crush Pride . Row 1: A. Stanton, J. Harby, B. Adam, S. Sadecki, B. Baldi. Row 2 M. Harrold, T. Wood, A. Courses are primarily designed to prepare students for entry level employment in certain occupational areas upon graduation from high school. They also provide the college bound student with practical hands on ex- perience. Here are some of our star students acting out their roles as auto mechanics, hairdressers, masons, food processors, secretaries, and computer programmers. 149 GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ STATE This year brought Alison Moore, Brian Kaup- pila, and Erwin LaTourette an opportunity to complete a one week course in state and local government. Keuka College hosted Girls' State, where Alison was appointed a Senatorial position and discussed current issues. Brian and Erwin attended Morrisville Community College, participating as a coun- ty district attorney and an assistant fire chief. 150 Of whaf use is this page, you ask? Here are just a few of our constructive suggestions: 1. Write out your next English assignment on this page. Tear out and hand in. You may not get an A , but we do promise some interesting results. 2. If you have been unable to find a picture of yourself in this book, this page is just for you. Collect one or more pictures of yourself and collage over sandwich. 3. Think of all the people you like. Have them sign here. 4. Cut out along solid line. Use as a commemorative Walton High School cafeteria placemat. To bring back fond memories, use with cheese cubes and carrot sticks. 5. Think of all the people you can't stand. Imagine them bet- ween two slices of bread as you list them here. 151 CLASS OFFICERS Regents Scholarship Winners Robert Adam Susan Byington Nancy Cucciarre Karen diLorenzo Patricia Dorsey Robin Horn James Hurley John Ingles Brian Kauppila James Neice Steven Price Suzanne Ragusa Matthew Schreier Laura Whitaker Nursing Carol Fancher Karen Robinson — alternate President — Karen Robinson Vice President — Steve Sadecki Secretary — Kris Adams Treasurer — Steve George High Honors Valedictorian Nancy Cucciarre Salutatorian Patricia Dorsey Susan Byington Denise Campbell Karen diLorenzo Robin Horn Brian Kauppila Cynthia Meres Steven Price Lisa Underwood Laura Whitaker mERiT SCHOLARSHIP ALTERNATES Refer to page 1S4-1S7 1. And look beyond the things I've known, And dream that I might be free. Like the bird above the trees, Gliding gently on the breeze, I wish that all my life I'd be Without a care And flying free. But life is not a distant sky Without a cloud. Without rain; And I can never hope That I can travel on without pain. Time goes swiftly on its way. All too soon we've lost today. I cannot wait for skies of blue Or dream so long that life is through. So life's a song that I must sing, A gift of love I must share; And when I see the joy it brings. My spirits soar through the air. Like that bird up in the sky. Life has taught me how to fly. For now I know that I can be. And now my heart Is flying free. — Don Besig 186 82 in Review 187 And so our final act comes to a close. We reflect on the roles that brought us stardom, revel in the applause, ponder the criticism. The curtain falls. The lights 30 out. Our script is left behind to be rewritten, recast, relived... 188 190 191 ... time it was and what a time it was, it was ... a time of innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph. Preserve your memories ... they're all that's left you. — Simon and Garfunkel 192
