6th PLACE The day the marching band went to the State Fair was both nerve- racking and tiring. We had to meet at the school at 8:45; there, we were met with mass confusion. As we boarded the buses with uniforms, flags, instruments, batons, rifles, and hats, people were wishing us Good Luck. We left at 9:00, having in mind the three hour trip ahead of us. After we arrived at the fairgrounds at 12:00, we found our parking place and were excused for lunch. Food didn't really sound good to any of us, since we knew there was about an hour until showtime. After our lunch, we found our way back to the buses. There we were confronted with chaos as some eighty people tried to get changed in the 90-degree vehicles. When everyone was ready, we practiced for about thirty minutes. We then got into marching formation, walked to the track, and started our mile-long trek to the grandstand. There were a lot of little whispers to keep us busy as we marched: Pretty soon it will be over, You’re out of step. Shh, Remember you're at attention, Don't forget that one part, “Is my hair okay?” Don't be nervous. As we approached the waiting line, we saw the face of a former band member and dear friend, Joan Courtney. She gave us all a pat on the back, which relaxed us, so we were ready to go on with it. Slowly, we marched to the starting line. There was the grandstand! Our name was being announced on the loud speaker. For what seemed like hours, we stood, before we got the okay to go. Walt called us to attention, and we began. The show seemed to go much faster than it ever did at home. We were done! With a sigh of relief, we climbed onto some risers for a unit picture. After the picture, we returned to the grandstand, sat down, and waited for the results. They started with the drum majors and colorguard awards. We didn't receive any. As the man announced the first place twirling squad, we all jumped and yelled because he had said, Walton. Next came the band awards. 15,14,13,12,11.” Yeah! We made the top ten. unless we're below 15. 10, 9, 8, 7, 8 Walton. We did it! We are the sixth place band in New York State.” We listened and cheered as they announced the rest of the winners. Then we went back to the buses to change. All the band members had some free time, so we set out to see the fair with friends. The day will long be remembered in all of our minds as the first time w-e went to the State Fair. — Sue Byington 6
