O’Neill High School Walton, New York FLASHBACK ’79 SUMMER SUCCESS 1. We made it — finally! 2. That’s being together. 3. Perfection! 4. Would you believe they are marching backwards? 5. Lorrie: getting their attention. 5 6th PLACE The day the marching band went to the State Fair was both nerve- racking and tiring. We had to meet at the school at 8:45; there, we were met with mass confusion. As we boarded the buses with uniforms, flags, instruments, batons, rifles, and hats, people were wishing us Good Luck. We left at 9:00, having in mind the three hour trip ahead of us. After we arrived at the fairgrounds at 12:00, we found our parking place and were excused for lunch. Food didn't really sound good to any of us, since we knew there was about an hour until showtime. After our lunch, we found our way back to the buses. There we were confronted with chaos as some eighty people tried to get changed in the 90-degree vehicles. When everyone was ready, we practiced for about thirty minutes. We then got into marching formation, walked to the track, and started our mile-long trek to the grandstand. There were a lot of little whispers to keep us busy as we marched: Pretty soon it will be over, You’re out of step. Shh, Remember you're at attention, Don't forget that one part, “Is my hair okay?” Don't be nervous. As we approached the waiting line, we saw the face of a former band member and dear friend, Joan Courtney. She gave us all a pat on the back, which relaxed us, so we were ready to go on with it. Slowly, we marched to the starting line. There was the grandstand! Our name was being announced on the loud speaker. For what seemed like hours, we stood, before we got the okay to go. Walt called us to attention, and we began. The show seemed to go much faster than it ever did at home. We were done! With a sigh of relief, we climbed onto some risers for a unit picture. After the picture, we returned to the grandstand, sat down, and waited for the results. They started with the drum majors and colorguard awards. We didn't receive any. As the man announced the first place twirling squad, we all jumped and yelled because he had said, Walton. Next came the band awards. 15,14,13,12,11.” Yeah! We made the top ten. unless we're below 15. 10, 9, 8, 7, 8 Walton. We did it! We are the sixth place band in New York State.” We listened and cheered as they announced the rest of the winners. Then we went back to the buses to change. All the band members had some free time, so we set out to see the fair with friends. The day will long be remembered in all of our minds as the first time w-e went to the State Fair. — Sue Byington 6 CRUSH, CRUSH, CRUSH... 1. Hike! 2. Sisters waiting for a dance. 3. Go get ’em team. 4. Melissa doing her thing. 5. Being drenched with Crush. 6. Coltrane. 7. Let’s split! 8. Getting caught.. . 9. Pam and. of course, her money. Homecoming '79 was a day to remember. It started off looking like rain during the parade and pep rally. The Class of '83 won 1st place with their float, Mup-up the Marauders. Later that day the Walton Warriors crushed Sherburne Earlville in a 56-13 triumph. During halftime the band per- formed a field show which featured the color- guard's dance. Also during halftime the court was introduced and the queen, Sharon Constable, was crowned by last year's returning queen, Kelly Turner. Besides Sharon Constable, the court included: Jayne M. Budine. Laurie Fletcher, Brenda Hoyt, Kellie Peck, Mary Jane Ryan. Alyson Sheradin, Connie Turner, and Dawn Warren. Later that evening a dance was held. At 10:30 the team and court toasted the Orange Crush Vic- tory. An end to a perfect day. n THE BLUE TIDAL WAVE The Moving-Up Day ceremonies of 1979 were anything but peaceful and uneventful. Although it was new and exciting for most of the underclassmen, it was a time of sadness and parting for the seniors. For most of us, it wras the last time we would see them all together. Still, it was fun for everyone. The seniors began with a re-run of their roles in their kindergarten graduation. Dressed in costume, everyone in the class recited poems, danced or sang. Much of this was funny enough to make us weep; some of it was bad enough to make us weep. too. Then it was time for all the classes to move-up to their new seats. The most impressive move was the one provided by the Class of '80. The entire class, dressed in matching blue t-shirts, resembled a great tidal wave as they moved into their justly deserved spot: first place in the newly acquired senior section. SWEEPS INTO FIRST PLACE After the moving-up of classes, the seniors passed down their class personalities to the Class of '80. The end was coming near as the Class of 79 sang their song. Bookends. Most of them didn't know the words, but what do you expect from the last of the '70’s? The last event of the day was the most spectacular. Starting with the Class of '84 and going up to the Class of 80, we filed into the courtyard. From there a very long cornucopia was formed for the seniors to walk through. In all. it was an emotional day, an eventful day, a day we shall remember for a long time. 13 The theme of our Junior-Senior Prom this year was Just the Way You Are. Although the band. Tight Squeeze, had never played it before, they pulled it off quite well with two hours of practice beforehand. Most of the audience was impressed by this nine-piece band and its music. The prom committee did a great job this year. The Class of 80 should feel proud that they had so many people volunteer their time and effort. The decorations outside, down the hall and in the gym were superb. Although the streamers drooped low by the time of the crowning, the magical effect still remained. u The time of the crowning was the climax in the magic of the evening. The following couples were members of this year s court: Jayne M. Budine and Phil King, Jean Finn and Eric Collins. Mary Jane Ryan and Dave Gardepe. Kellie Peck and Tim Gregory, Dawn Warren and Bruce Shelton, Sharon Constable and Rick Lambrecht. The princess and prince were Dawn Warren and Bruce Shelton, and the King and Queen were Sharon Constable and Rick Lambrecht. The Junior-Senior Prom will always hold fond memories for many of us. 15 Each one of us grows in our own way, living each day for its own intrinsic worth and then anticipating the next one. We leave behind many memories, some sad, others are happy. But each of us has experienced events in our lives that may be of little impor- tance or that may drastically change our lives. Some individual remembrances don't alter our lives. Going to gym class on the Friday you're not supposed to, the day the research class went to Delhi, and Mrs. Matalavage's social studies classes— these are among memories we all enjoy, but they don’t change our lives very much. We also share moments that most of us will never forget: the sit-down strike in 1975, the bomb scare in 1975. the Junior-Senior Prom of 1979-1980, and the Moving-Up Day ceremonies of 1979. These memories made an impression upon all of us. We will never forget these moments. For most of us, though, we foresee that our most memorable moment will be gradua- tion. It's an event we will all experience, and. at the same time, it will be a big step for- ward in our lives. Certain moments in our individual lives will never be forgotten. Most of us will look back someday and smile at the memories of our high school years. O’CONNELL The Class of 1980 has always had one special advisor and friend, Mr. O'Connell. He took an interest in us, and in his humorous way eased us over several hurdles. We enjoyed his stories, giggled at his jokes, and admired his clothes. But his helpfulness and concern have made an impression on us; we understand loyalty and involvement a little better thanks to his unique character. The Senior Class of 1980 applauds you Mr. O’Connell, for all that you have done for us. Thank You for making our senior year more special. 24 Chatizngt. of the. 8o : Jls-t the. word go forth from thii. time, and fihace, to fi tend, and foe, aLikz, t(iat t(iz toxcfi fiai buzn fianzd to a new gznzxation of c tmzxicani . . . 25 - 3 -'X JL (2[aii of 1 gSo vjoudd [itzz to dzdiaatz tiiz iznioz izction of d z a Q u in memory of ouz atanmatz and fziznd, [B i[[ cdfunt sdf (jzizf aandtz, [otii - c fn zndtzii mi[z, a [ui vjiizzt turning, czdj- fziznd to liiazz tiiz [onziomz timzi, fdindifiaJzz and a iifi of urine. Each afternoon they put on their tennis shoes and carrying with them only cartons of chocolate milk, they headed for the mountainous terrain known as the tennis courts. The girls learned to serve over the Rockies, volley around the Himalayas, and drop-shot while standing on Mt. Everest. Needless to say the old obstacle course is gone now, but the team will always remember it fondly. Row 1: D. Ogden, mgr.. M. Tyler, L. Carlson. Row 2: M. Moore. D. Turner, A. Sheradin, K. Morgan, D. Next year we hope the team, under the fine coaching of Mr. Alvarez and Mr. Dake, will have the winning season they deserve. 170 171 It was a rough year for the Girls’ Basketball Team, but there were some bright spots.
