He is staying with the James Crane family here in Walton until he leaves in March. He is interested in track and swimming. Jose is returning early in order not to miss any classes of his school term. He plans to go into diplomacy. Jose is impressed with our modern, clean school and finds the people friendly and helpful. A mparo A rango Amparo is 18 years old and comes to us from Cali, Columbia. She arrived on Feb. 15 and is staying with the J. Edsen Peck family in Walton. Her father man- ages a large restaurant and her mother is a sales repre- sentative for a perfume firm. WALTON, N.Y. 13856 Pi'tWe Book W«t., 193 n December 14, 1853, the Walton Academy opened its doors for the first time. It was located at the present Garden Apts. , facing south. Little girls in ankle length dresses, and little boys in trousers were ushered in by teachers wearing hoop skirts. Since it was then private, tuition for a college preparatory course was $50. The Academy was made a Union Free School in 1868. WALTON ACADEMY The old armory was bought in 1896, and used as classrooms for ele- mentary grades. The school gymnasium was once in this building, and was considered one of the finest in the state. The gym was lit by electricity and had a basketball court and an indoor baseball dia- mond. The former Stockton Avenue School is now the Walton Grange Hall. MILLER AVENUE SCHOOL With Walton's popula- tion on the rise, it became apparent that a new elementary school was needed. So, in 1917, Miller Avenue School was built to house grades 1-8. This school contained enough room for all classes except physical training, which was conducted in the State Armory for several years. 194 WALTON HIGH SCHOOL Opened in the fall of 1892, the new brick 3- story school building was furnished with the most modem and useful fix- tures, had the best sys- tem of heating known, and was considered unsurpassed by any union school in the state. At one time it was known as the Union School, but was later renamed Wal- ton High School. In 1936, a piece of land was bought from Albert H. Sewell, and the Townsend School erected there. The school is named after Howell B. Townsend, a principal for many years who contributed much to the school system. Presently, it is used as an elementary school. O’NEILL HIGH SCHOOL TOWNSEND SCHOOL On May 12, 1962, stu- dents from the old high school, gathered their books and supplies. Led by their teachers, the students paraded through town, to the new Walton High School. What was once farm land, is now the sight of our own school. In 1974, the school was renamed in tribute to Thomas H. O’Neill, whose life work was the Walton Central School. 195 The Teacher's Training Class was started in 1896. Candidates had to be at least 17 years old. Scholars were instructed in the proper methods of teaching. To qual- ify for this select group, a candidate had to hold a third grade certificate, at least a 70 aver- age, and a regents preliminary certif- icate and fourteen academic counts. Upon successful completion of a year’s work, a Training Class Certificate” was given for a term of three years. Does this look familiar? Even in 1912 students were required to take chemistry besides geography, bot- any, physiology and astronomy. As you can see, stu- dents used the most modem equipment to perform their experiments. TEACHER'S TRAINING CLASS 1904 CHEMISTRY LABORATORY CARPENTER SHOP AND FORGE ROOM In this shop room, young men learned the trades of car- pentry and black- smithing. The tools they used were not modem, but they served their purpose well. Notice the dirt floors and wood stove. 196 BASEBALL TEAM In the early Acad- emy years, there were no organized sports. Students got together to play a game of ball at Townsend Flats. By 1910-11 W.H.S. boys played 12 baseball games against out of town teams. This pic- ture was taken of the team in 1925. W.H.S. TRACK TEAM One of the first track meets Walton participated in was at the Deposit Fair in 1902. A surprise to everyone, the Walton High School team won the meet. This picture was taken in 1902, and, at that time, bicy- cling was a track event. GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM The first time bas- ketball was intro- duced to Walton was when it was taught to girls in the late 1890's. Blouses, bloomers, and black stockings were regulation uniforms at the time. 197 Football was first organized in Wal- ton in 1892. Soon after the W.H.S. teams were defeating nearly all opponents. In 1895, none of the opposing teams managed to score at all. Unfortunately, investigation disclosed that only four of the Wal- ton players were actually in school at the time. In the first 12 years of its existence, the team lost only twice. Since that time Walton has produced several legitimate” undefeated teams. This picture was taken in 1931. W.H.S. FOOTBALL TEAM TENNIS TEAM Tennis has long been a popular sport in Walton. Early tennis players used courts constructed at Kaiser Field. Today students and adults alike use the modem courts constructed at the time of the new high school. This picture was taken in 1931. Boys basketball was not officially organ- ized until 1902. They soon became a hard team to beat. Walton has since become a basketball town. A good num- ber of Walton’s citizens played for W.H.S. W.H.S. BASKETBALL TEAM 198 The original founders of Walton first settled here near the present Ogden Library. A tract of land was bought by Dr. Platt Townsend in 1785, which included much of the village of Walton. The Congregational Church is the oldest organized church, dating back to 1791. At first, it was in a log building on Prospect Hill and was known as the Union Society. One of the oldest homes in Walton is this one on Del- aware St. owned by Mrs. Dorothy Brandt. The house was built in 1803. 199 The original depot for the O W (Old Weary) Railroad 200 Mr. Raney gr School in'%39.
