“
— We, the editors, are proud to present the 1968 Ivy Tower to the students of Walton Central. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the many people who helped us from the book’s conception to it’s completion. Without their help, and many long hours spent on the yearbook, it would not have been possible. We wish to thank Mrs. Belmont, our advisor, for her many hours spent with us, and for the helpful advice, which she so generously offered us. To Mr. Lussier, also, who provided a workroom for us and offered many useful suggestions, we say thank-you. We hope this book is representative of the many good times had throughout this year, and we hope you will keep it, and in years to come it will bring back fond memories. A Man’s Wisdom Maketh His Face to Shine” Ecclesiastes The Class of 1968 takes pride in dedicating its book to a fine teacher, an active civic leader, and an understanding friend, Wendell E. Spear. The early hours of school find Mr. Spear’s classroom filled with students, all eager to share a friendship, an idea or a personal experience. His desire to share knowledge with his students, is evident in all his classes. Football seasons, for several years, found Mr. Spear on the field coaching the Walton Warriors. Spring finds the coach working out the track team. The enthusiasm shown on the field is equally shared by the boys and the coach. His wisdom is not limited to the classroom nor the athletic field—but extends to his fine understanding of young people. A graduate of Geneva College. Pennsylvania, Mr. Spear is active in Kiwanis and is serving as President of both that club and of the Teacher’s Association this year. A busy man, he is never too busy to listen to a student’s questions. The classes, friendships and ideas that we the class of '68, have shared with Mr. Spear will be remembered always. “The Gladness of the Heart is the Life of the Man.” On beam - Helen Bmrtdege, art editor; Cathy Lynch, photography; Susan Fitch, literary editor; Linda Lincourt, Linda Kilmer, senior section editors; Patty MacNaught, sales manager; Crystal Robbins, busi- ness manager; on floor - Curt VanBuren, sports and junior editors; Tim McCreight, junior editor; Ellen Peck, art editor; Valarie Kite, sections editor; Christine Anderson, treasurer, front-co-editors, Jane Mathews and Anne-Marie Ray. 196£ Ivy Tower Qlaff SUBSCRIPTION SELLERS On steps, going down: Patty Breakey, Cindy Stanton, Nancy Lewis, Karen Palmer, Eilene Fanagan, Kathy Merrill, Sue Laidiaw, Vicki North, Valarie Kite, Karen Bolles, Mary Popp, front: Jean Loker, chairman: Patricia MacNaught OUR MASCOT High School Principal, Mr. J. Lyman Roney, Supervising Principal, Mr. Thomas O'Neil To The Class of 1968 The world has recently witnessed four major explosions, each more important than a hundred meg- aton bomb; in knowledge; in population; in space; and in freedom. More new things have been discovered in the past ten years than in the previous one hundred years; and the rate of the increase of knowledge is accelerating. The space programs bring us face to face with a new demand for international co-operation and con- trol if we are to assure survival. The population explosion has exposed us to the still unresolved problem of helping the people in un- derdeveloped countries to improve their standard of living. Finally, the freedom explosion in Africa and the East poses critical questions affecting the Western way of life. Nations with newly gained freedom which they have not yet learned to manage are bewil- dered and restless, enviously suspicious of better developed nations, and unready to accept guidance in government and in industrial evolution. To enable young people of today to live successfully in this difficult and fretful age, we need to fo- cus our emphasis on these things: a broad background of meaningful and interrelated knowledge, a well- established set of generalized habits and attitudes toward creativity, scientific method, and critical thinking, and wholesome personality growth and devotion to a set of moral and spiritual values. Remember, it’s part of the game of life to discover the spark of greatness God has entrusted to you personally - and then have the patience and perseverance to direct it into worthwhile channels. J. Some lessons have come very hard to us but thanks to the experience gleaned from every seemingly insignificant day, we have survived. We are ready to fling open the door that leads to an unsheltered, and often brutal world, but as we go, we depart with an education and a bundle of memories that will forever rest in the depths of our minds. It now becomes our responsibility, and honor to impart a bit of wisdom to the underclassmen. It is imperative that you know your- self, have confidence, and give every one of your endeavors all you can. Nothirig is ever accomplished without work but work is never accomplished without some play. E. S. Defeating all his opponents, Donny took the lead as section champi- on of the unlimited category. Not only did Don win section title, but went on to New York State Championships. The 330 pound wrestler, tabbed the Great Pumpkin” by the crowds at the championships, literally crushed his op- ponents. With a three to one victory in an overtime bout, Don brought honor to himself and to his school by winning the title and crown of New York State Champion. As a whole the Walton Wrestling team did quite well this year ending the season with a 14 to 4 record and winning the Christmas Tourney. Action pictures courtesy of Walton Reporter. Bresee's has anything you could ask for. They have a complete line of men's, women's, and children's clothing; in every size, style, and color. For the children, they have a large assortment of toys. For the parents they have a large assortment of dishes, tools, fur- niture, etc. , and for the teenagers they have a complete line of the latest records. They also have fabrics, patterns, yarn and needles for those who love to create their own clothes. Bresee's is also famous for theirfine food. You can order anything from a cup of coffee to a complete dinner. You can eat before you do your shopping. Little children don't usually care to follow their parents while they are shopping, but when they come to Bresee's they find it a big treat to visit the toy department and ride on the escalator. Bresee's has brought this ad to you, through the Walton Central yearbook. Walton supports Bresee's with all of its students that shop there.
