From November of 1973 to June 1982 Jack Delaney was Taylor Publishing Company's representative to the Waltham High. During that time J ack took a mediocre book and made it a book unequaled in the New England area. J ack's patience and understanding in teaching an inexperienced advisor the finer points of yearbook design was the main reason for any success that we have enjoyed. Last June J ack passed away suddenly and on that day the Waltham High School yearbook lost its biggest supporter. Last July I decided to go along with J ack's plan for using computer graphics in the book. I then dedicated myself to producing the finest yearbook that I could. Mere words cannot describe my feelings, but this book will serve as my tribute to my friend, mentor, and a true gentleman-J ack Delaney. memorial bernie collins cttw' if . i il'-Ni! Bernard Collins was a member of the Waltham High School Business Depart- ment for the past 18 years. During his time at the high school he was a devoted teacher, involved in educational activities and an active member of the Wal- tham Educators Association. As a family man with ten children of his own, Mr. Collins was well prepared as a teacher. He had an excellent rapport with his students, was full of under- standing and concern for others, and earned the respect, admiration, and fondness of his peers. 5 I 1 I i W S 9 Q 1 ,pil ww., . Smal Smrltf-S. ,plpllifis Q' I9 I' is fx ,089 the dirt dogs X008 spark an 8-1 season M With a semi-new coaching staff and only three starters returning, an 8-1 record was the outcome of the 1982 Waltham High Football Sea- son. This was accomplished by a group of athletes who posessed tal- ent but no stars and worked togeth- er as a team. After an opening game victory over Brookline, the Hawks were faced with five formidable opponents. One by one each team was defeated with key wins over an undefeated Quincy team and a hard-hitting Arlington team. The Arlington game produced one of the most dramatic goalline stands by Waltham's Dirty Dogs. Wins over Somerville and arch-rival Newton led to a Thanksgiving Day showdown with Brockton. For eight by linda magliarditi consecutive weeks, Waltham had remained one of the few undefeated teams in the state. Junior Steve Giusti led the offense with 511 yards rushing. Seniors Dar- ren Marcou and Mike Little contri- buted with 354 yards and 383 yards, respectively. M.V.P. Rich Bartle- man and co-captains Bob Qualters and John Saulnier were able to rally defense to a truly awesome year. Julie Bou- dreau, who played first singles, faced the toughest opponents and had strong wins against Cambridge and Brockton, Carla Lamb played second singles and proved to be the team's most consisent player. Carla had the best record of 6-6. Ellen Mesrobian was the team's best double player. Having been a three year mem- ber, she was one of the most determined players. Tina Chung and Janet LaRosa, who were both three year players, con- by carla lamb tributed at all the matches and practices. Kathy Monahan played doubles and showed great team spirit throughout the season. The team may have lacked an abundance of great talent but made up with great desire to win.The freshmen, sophomore, and junior players contributed in many ways and played a great supportive role during the matches and practices. Coach Graceffa is looking forward to next years team because of the desire to play and the discipline these undergraduates dis- played. 9. Their regular season record was 12 85 23 co-champs of the Suburban League. This record qualified them for State Tourna- ment play. In the State Tournament, they beat Chelmsford 3 to 2 and lost to Arling- ton in the quarter finals 2 to 1. This brought the overall record to 13 85 3. The team was lead by Senior Co-Captains Theresa Guigno and Jeanne Gately. The- resa had a 12 8: 2 pitching record which was the best in the Suburban League. She was named to the first team Surbur- gan League All Stars and was named as M.V.P. of the Suburban League. She was also one of the top hitters in the league with a 404 batting average. Jeanne Gately was a defensive standout at shortstop. Her outstanding plays at that position allowed her to be picked as the Suburban Leagues second team All Star Shortstop. Her leadership and the champs by karen gearty respect she received from her team mem- bers helped to motivate the girls to play as well as they did. Other senior standouts were Barbara O'Brien and Paula Riccio. Barbara was a first base returnee who improved consid- erably on defense. Offensively she came through with some clutch hits through- out the season and ended up with a 346 batting average. Second baseman Paula Riccio was another defensive star who also improved with the bat. She made the team very strong up the middle and worked well on double plays with short- stop Jeanne Gately. Paula was the second batter in the line up and was called upon to bunt and move runners up. She ended up with a fine 389 batting average and was named to the Suburban League All Stars second team. The team was made up of a great bunch of players. Everyone helped each other and made a contribution to the team which allowed us to go as far as we did. Ak , . 9'-'S 1 I . gs? The course gives the student an insight with first hand knowledge and experience into many different health fields. The first year of the course is a classroom study where the student learns medical terminology, medical techniques, first aid, and small medical tasks. During the second year, the stu- dent aquires first hand experience with these techniques and tasks by volunteering at various clinical health agencies once a week. They also have a classroom study in which the stu- dents learn in detail of the human body, its diseases, their causes and treatments. The course is a very rewarding exper- ience. It was initiated and has been bv lmda maglzardltl taught for the past ten years by Mrs Janet Coen an R N educator Mrs Coen is a caring warm hearted teacher who strives to help each student indi vidually. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to be touched by her warm and gentle ways are very lucky indeed! To all of us she has been a friend: always there to guide us, al- ways there to listen, always there to help us make the right decisions about our ensuing careers. The health careers program will con- tinueg but unfortunately for its new students, Mrs. Coen will not be there to lead it. After ten years at Waltham High, Mrs. Coen is retiring and will certainly be missed by all who worked with her. We wish her happiness in her retirement, and we are sure she will continue to share her compassion with everyone she touches. I-13 1 X. 1 . . Y K x I' Q 4 . X. .SA K' I! scholarship, character, leadership, and service are trademarks of Traditionally, the National Honor Society has embodied the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Its mem- bers, totaling forty-seven this year, demon- strated these ideals, par excellence. En- couraged by their advisor, Ms. Rosemary Geary, the members were involved in many activities both in school and outside. Some of these activities include: fundrais- ing for charitable causes and scholarships, assisting Parent-Teachers' meetings, tutor- ing at the high and elementary levels, as- sisting at Sophmore Crientation and Gradu- ation activities, entertaining at the W.E.A. Christmas Party for residents at the Fer- nald School, assisting teachers with the Ba- sic Skills Testing Program in Writing, and working with teachers and staff in the Me- dia Center, houseoffices, and nurse's office. In addition, the society co-sponsored the Noble Prize Program with the Student Council to honor students in Waltham in the areas of academics, civics, athletics, and n.h.s. by andrea gallagher special recognition. Under the creative and dynamic leadership of this year's officers: President Colleen fGidgetJ Brown, Vice-president Jake Foote, Secretary, Anne Arnold, and Treasurer, Gina Caruso, the Society initiated a new scholastic program for the benefit of stu- dents and teachers alike. This new program entitled The Speakers' Slate provided for guest speakers to come to the high school to talk on various issued including, nuclear war, nuclear power, and ethnicity in Wal- tham. The Speakers' Slate also sponsored a popular debate on Reganomics between Mr. Cappucci, a business teacher and Mr. Walk- er, a social studies teacher. The members themselves presented an all day panel pre- sentation for juniors on The College Appli- cation Process. It is apparent that the N.H.S. members of the Class of 1983 chose the road less trav- elled by in the immortal words of poet, Robert Frost and that has made all the difference for everyone concerned. We will always remember the fun shared dur- ing many happy hours at the White Heron. After the White Heron many of us hopped into taxis driven by friendly Bermudians and went to our favorite discos - for some it was the Disco 40 and others the French Connection and the 4O Theivesf' The nights were never long enough! Despite our lack of sleep, However, many of us managed to wake up the next morning and drive our mopeds quite Well. A favorite meeting place was Horse- shoe Bay, where we met the Bermuda Strollers! As one observer commented iff and on by kathy venini in envy, You're partying with the Bermuda Strollers? Nothing but the best! We toured the beautiful island sites and many found our own special places on the island where we could watch the sunrise. During the day we toured magnificent Bermuda. We dis- covered fortresses of long ago along the shore line. In addition we explored rock caves, crystal caves, many fam- ous lighthouses, and the perfume fac- tory. . Along about midday, many of us gathered at the Swizzle Inn for lunch and their infamous rum swizzles. After lunch we continued with our touring and later rendezvoused for the Happy Hour at the White Heron. In all it was a fun packed Week. Every- one was sad to leave this site of awe and excitement. We boarded our plane with tears in our eyes, we concluded with the lyrical song, Bermuda is an- other World. A, lr L., nts K 47 kv-J: :rl - ,, -: -iry r' Q.- I -Q 4 'WHL . . -VL' . The many guest speakers all wished the class well and lots of luck for the future. Guest speaker, Mrs. Lillian Shirley, said that two-thirds of the class will go on to col- lege and one-third will pursue careers. Also, Superintendent of Schools, Mr. John J. Daddona, was told to make it short by his graduating son. The day was marked with many congratulations and many hopes for the future spoken by many of the speakers including class Valedictorian, Anne Arnold, who spoke about the future. Each one of you has a by lisa stslmon dream that is different from the person sitting next to you. She also warned her classmates to make choices carefully and realistically. Also, Diane Pintabone, expressed her feelings towards the fu- ture in the Class Poem which she Wrote and read especially for the Class of 1983 Graduation Day ceremonies. The Class of 1983 brightened up the cloudy day by wearing the class colors of red for the boys, and white for the girls who also carried red roses. All in all, everyone was sad to be leaving, but all were looking forward to their future plans in college or in pursuing a career. Congratulations, Class of 1983! 46 an y ,C- 1' wi V Time Is A Process Of Becoming Time is a process of becoming And we wonder what it is we'vc become We look back and consider where we've been And we see all the things we've done. We now stand on a threshold, Before us the future lies - Open gates lesd to hundreds of fates Beneath these clear blue skies. Behind us we see our classrooms And remember the years that have passed - Years that flew like the warm summer's breeze And now become part of our past. Forever we'll remember the people, Who through these years with us have shared Their knowledge and wisdom and kindness And have guided with love and care. Ahead, the doors lie open Each of us will choose his way To find the door to his future As we go out through these doors today. With time we will changeg With time we will grow Years hence we may wonder Where did our time go? z-1 1 .v YA ' 'Q' So as we travel along our own paths To find whatever we may We must stop now and then to consider Those who warm our lives every day. Remember always this one thing: We each control our own dreamsg We each can achieve whatever we wish Regardless of how hard it may seem. So fear not the future and what you may find For the world lies open to your heart and your mind. Diane Pintabone l 1 Q5-L, 'X -I I I .1 'f 1 D I! 'r rl., nhl: .
