RAYMON D A. CiRAXY'IfORD The founder of the first instrumental high school band in Massachusetts, the XY'altham High band. died in December of 1961 at the age of 66. Mr. Raymond A. Crawford graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1918 and then had a very distinguished musical career. In the course of his 56 years in XY'altham his bands received national recognition. Mr. Crawford devoted much of his time to civic activities. among these the Rotary Club, the American Legion, and the XY'altham Chamber of Commerce. His personal generosity to his students will always be appreciated. f -if THOMAS A. ROACH A former XY'altham High English teacher, Thomas A. Roach was also extremely talented in the field of dramatics. It was while he was both teaching and acting that he died suddenly in September. 1962. Born in XValtham. Mr. Roach graduated from St. 'losephs College in Tarrytown. New York. and then went on to study at Catholic I'niyersity of America and Manhattan College. Except for four years when he was in the servite during XY'orld XY'ar II, Mr. Roach had a brilliant teaching career at XX'altham High ff0H1 1938 to 1957. In 1957 he left XY'altham to take an lfnglish teaching post at XY'atertown High. lo his family we extend our sincere sympathy. F-s nn JOHN L. LEARY On August 18, 1961. XX'altham lost one of the outsta letes of the century and the high school one of its b figures. Born on May 2, 1891. John Leary became sportsman. Although he was known throughout his h nding ath- est known a versatile igh school years as a football star. after graduation he gained national recognition as a major league baseball player. His baseball career was interrupted by two years of sen' Navy during XVorld W'ar I. Later he returned to XY'altha eight year ice in the m High to take a position as combination football coach, baseball coach, and head of the physical education department. He lcd XYaltham teams to victory for the next forty years. So exceptional was this man as an athlete and molder of men that April I 25. 1959, was proclaimed as Leary Day and the NXaltham Athletic Field was renamed the john L.
