CLASS Poem TO BEAR THE TORCH In chains man languished, longing to breathe free. Till-with might of Bunyan- He burst his shackles. A deafening clang The bonds struck rock. A spark . . .r A light . . A flame . . . The glow of Freedom's face! The blood and toil of a nation have fed the flame, Sheltered it from winds of wanton war. Resplendent it has stood A beacon to all the world. The sightless see the light of hope. The lost are found. The small are great. Faces lift from despair. Men walk with straight backs. The crushing hand of iron sets free the dove. But see how the billows of smoky death roll 'round The hungry flame To take away its breath. A 'Tis now our task to tend the flame. To never let it die. Raise up the torch, take on the burden, O sons and daughters of Wfashington and Lincoln Of Yorktown and Gettysburg, And proudly bear with aching, straining arm The golden lamp that from the deepest pits of earthly hell Men may see and say, I'm free. jOHN G. MLDONALD, ,IR Senior High
