Stfrewzfrd We have lived through three of the most eventful years of this Century. Great men have arisen, great men have died in this short span of time. Newly inde- pendent states have appeared onthe face of clark Africag supreme power in nations has been entrusted to new leaders, some capable, others radical. There has been conflict and there has been happiness during these three years, which form only an infinitesimal grain in the sands of time. We, the Class of 1961, have been witnesses to the making of history. In our yearbook we have recorded the men and events that have occupied such a promi- nent place in our lives and in the eyes of the world. . As we record these personalities, we wonder whether time will erase many of the names of today from the chronicles of the world, or if these names will with- stand the test for immortality. How many footprints will remain on the shifting sands of time? DR JOHN W. McDEVITT With respect and admiration we, the Class of 1961, dedicate our yearbook to Dr. john W. McDevitt. In addition to his eighteen years as Superintendent of Schools, civic- minded Dr. McDevitt has served as a trustee of the Waltham Public Library, a director of the Waltham Boys' Club, a director of the Wal- tham Chapter of the American Red Cross, and a director of the Wal- tham Chamber of Commerce. In 1928 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College, where he later took a Master of Arts degree. In 1956 he received his doctorate in philosophy from St. Michaels College in Vermont. On November 11, 1959, he was presented with the third annual David I. Walsh Award by the David I. Walsh General Assembly. The Knights of Columbus unanimously elected Dr. McDevitt Deputy Supreme Knight in October, 1960. We will not forget the leadership and guidance that Dr. McDevitt has given us during our years in the Waltham schools. Dedicafmu
