We anticipate that a future browsing through this volume will cause greater pleasure than a reading of it at the present. We have tried to make the 1957 Mirror different by dividing it into seasons, placing the senior pictures in the Fall as a symbol of our beginning as the Upperclassmen of Waltham High. With the above end in view we edit this book--to recapture in some dim distant day the infinite variety of spirits that were Waltham High School. ...QV MIRROR STAFF EDITOR-I N-CHIEF Judy SmiI'I1 ASSOCIATE EDITORS Mariha Garrahan Barbara Zagwyn LITERARY STAFF Jean Ewalf Ani'Ia D'Angio Nancy Kemp+on Jane MacNeiI Brenda Mason Joan Cass Pafricia Marlin Nancy Milligan Barbara Marshall Janice Drew Mar+I1a Sinclair Kafhryn Peel, Helen Smiih Linda Hills Lois Weinslein Mary ScoH Maryalice Tuiie Pairicia Winlrley Jeanne Vincuillo Barbara Klimoslri Virginia Hills Andrea Jaclrson Lee Qberly Irene Tice BUSINESS MANAGERS Sandra WoIcoH' Marilyn Graves BUSINESS STAFF Ruih Greaves Polly Beclrlund Joanne BenninaH'e Claire MeII1oI' Nancy Jacob Josepliine Graceffa Donna Wedge SECRETARY TO BOARD Diane Davis FACULTY ADVISOR Willard Smyih Q Nga 3 5 Ha Q5 . 52 X :fi Q. -.,.,,,rw,,f f Ii.? 3'::.'.i5S - - pl- ixygg-gm.-, i fig : .. ,QQ -ii 1? N ANCY MILLIGAN W.H.S. EXCHANGE STUDENT - 1956 The W.H.S. Share in Democracy Program for the second time enabled the Ameri- can Field Service to sponsor a Waltham High student to a foreign country as an Exchange Student. Nick Cannistraro, Jr., was able to spend the entire summer of 1956 in Switzerland. Nick, essentially a Junior Ambassador from the U. S., sailed on the S.S. Arosa Kulm on July 25 with 695 other American students for Europe. While in Switzerland he stayed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Weber and their four children-Hans- rudoff, Rolf, Seigfried, and Evalie-located in Zofingen. A highlight of Nick's stay in Europe was a reunion with Peter Diepold, the German exchange student who spent a year with us at W.H.S. and helped to launch our Share in Democracy Program. Some places visited by Nick were Lucerne, Zurich, Berne, and Paris, France. Being an American Boy Scout, Nick was very interested in attending the Scout Jamboree in Saignelegier, Switzerland. The climax of Nick's trip, always to be a lifelong remembrance, was the American Field Service Reunion at Montreux on Lake Geneva before sailing home Sept. 1. Speaking of his trip, Nick says, One must live with the Swiss people to truly under- stand them and their ideas. A .. After a few bewildering weeks of becoming acquainted with one another and with our strange environment, we held our first elections for homeroom representatives to the Student Council. Those elected were Arthur Marion, Marshall Gray, Martha Garrahan, Judy Smith, Dolores Cardillo, Stephen Walsh, and Beverly Parkinson. Any remaining unfamiliarity was completely eliminated when we attended the Sopho- more Get-Acquainted Dance. It was at social events such as this that we gained the close friendship of those who would be with us throughout our high school days. Ably aiding the 1954-1955 football squad in its successful season were sophomores Howard Kaplan, Richard Jafferian, Thomas Taranto, James Dennis, Michael Castellana, and John Dentino. A In November the Dramatic Club presented State Fairf' one of the most successful plays at Waltham High School in years. It starred Burt Mullen, Gail Gustavson, and Helen-Rae Smith, all proud members of the Sophomore Class. November brought another highlight of our high school careers, our first class elec- tions. The class elected Nicholas Cannistraro as president, ably assisted by Beverly Parkinson as vice president, Dolores Cardillo as secretary, and Darrell Gould as treasurer. Up and coming sophomores John Lezneski, John MacDonald, Joe Connelly, Thomas Taylor, and Arthur DeVincent were active members of the hockey squad, which com- piled a good record of five wins, three losses, and two ties. The Student Council selected Joan Champion and Odette Chaisson to help cheer the team to victory. In the spring of 1955, the Student Council conducted the Share in Democracy Campaign, a drive to raise funds to send a Waltham High student to Europe each summer and to pay for a European student's expense at our high school for one year. Many members of our Sophomore Class aided in making this campaign the tremendous success it was. As the final touch to our year, we attended the Sophomore Hop, the culmination of the year's trials and tribulations. It was then we realized that we had nearly reached one milestone on our way to becoming seniorsg we were about to become juniors. However, before leaving school for a much appreciated summer vacation, we elected the officers to lead us through the very important junior year. Again, the class elected Nicholas Cannistraro as president, with David Scott as vice president, Judy Smith as secretary, and Darrell Gould as treasurer. Upon returning to school in September, we saw new faces, not only among the Freshman and Sophomore Classes, but also among the faculty. The valuable services of Thomas Durkin, Paul Harvey, Marshall Gray, and Douglas Soles bolstered the hockey team in its quest for victory. To support the team vocally, the Student Council selected Alice Parlee, Ginny Farrell, Beverly LeBlanc, Sheila Rowe, and Judi Carruthers. During the year, worthy juniors received various awards of merit. Robert Hartley and Priscilla Charlton won the United Nations essay competition and received an all- expense paid trip to New York. Martha Garrahan and Irene Tice won first prizes in the Kingsbury Temperance Fund Essay Contest. As the junior boy with the highest scholastic record, Stephen Hays received the coveted Harvard Book Award. The faculty selected Louis Asekoff and Brenda Mason to represent the high school at Boys' State and Girls' State respectively. In May, fifteen deserving juniors were elected to the National Honor Society. Among the new members were Priscilla Charlton, Nicholas Cannistraro, Marion Desisto, Martha Garrahan, Robert Hartley, Stephen Hays, Nancy Kempton, Jean Lennox, Jane MacNeil, Brenda Mason, Nancy Milligan, Patricia Scott, Judy Smith, Irene Tice, and Barbara Zagwyn. The faculty and American Field Service awarded to Nicholas Cannistraro an international scholarship by means of which he would be Waltham Highis student ambassador to live in Switzerland during the summer following the junior year. The Dramatic Club presented a three-act comedy entitled More Than Meets the Eye late in May, 1956. Helping to make the show a success were three members of our Junior Class, Gail Gustavson, Larry Shriberg, and .loan Cass. The climax of our year came with the Junior Prom under the able chairmanship of Larry Shriberg, who, together with his committee, transformed the gym into a wonderful fantasyland. After the excitement of the Prom had subsided, we elected officers to lead us through the biggest and most exciting year of all, the senior year. Henry Blay took the presi- dency, with Louis Asekoff as vice president, Judi Carruthers as secretary, and William Rhodes as treasurer. Immediately following the class elections, we held the elections for the Student Council officers for the year 1956-1957. The class favored Nicholas Cannistraro for president, Steve Hays for boys' vice president, Linda Hills for girls' vice president, and Jane MacNeil for secretary-treasurer. It was not until our return to school in September, 1956, that we fully realized that we had reached our goal, we were finally seniors. Our football team, captained by Richard LaRosee and Thomas Taranto, had a quite satisfactory year, ardently supported by the class and all-senior cheerleaders, Linda Hills, Mary Curtin, Shirley Fitz-Gerald, Carol Flanigan, Dolores Cardillo, Priscilla Caie, Martha Ciavardone, Claire Salamanis, and Captain Eileen Charboneau. Then in November came Harvey, directed by Mr. Thomas Roach, the most successful Senior Class play in many years. Starring in this immortal comedy about Elwood P. Dowd's escapades with Harvey, his huge invisible white rabbit, were Larry Shriberg, masterfully portraying Elwood, and Astrid Collin, our exchange student from Norway, doing an equally fine job as his sister, Veta. The all-senior hockey team, captained by Thomas Taylor and Joe Connelly and bolstered by the play of John Steede and Harris Childs, scored two moral victories by twice tying Walpole, a jinx team we had not defeated and had tied only twice in more than ten years. Waltham High's most successful, though predominately underclass, basketball team in many years was sparked to success by the great play of Captain John Ricci, great rebounder and high-scoring senior. This first Tech Tourney team from our school since 1950 compiled a Suburban League record of ten wins and two losses and twice defeated a strong Brockton five. During the year several important awards honored members of the Senior Class. The faculty and the students selected Nancy Milligan as recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, Martha Garrahan and Jean Lennox won first and third prizes respectively in the annual B'nai B'rith Lodge essay contestg Jane MacNeil re- ceived the Betty Crocker Homemaking Award. The Student Council selected Larry Shriberg to represent the school at the Jewish War Veterans' Brotherhood Breakfast at the Sheraton-Plaza. The Student Council also named the Good Government Day Com- mittee comprised of Louis Asekoff, as chairman, to be Waltham High's representative at the State House in March, 1957, on Good Government Day. Carol Williams, Jean Lennox, William Rhodes, and Jane MacNeil were the other members of the Exchange Committee to visit and to entertain Concord High School. Another highlight of the year was the annual faculty vs. seniors basketball game. For the third consecutive year, the teachers' team was captained by Mr. MacArthur, whose players consisted of Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Allen, Mr. Alfke, Mr. Brucchi, Mr. Eames, Mr. Yetten, and Mr. Zeno. The students' great team was led by none other than the towering Arthur Genova. One of the biggest events of our senior year was the school show, Scandals of 1957, directed for the first time by a student, our own talented Stephen Hays, assisted by Bob Hartley, Nick Cannistraro, Larry Shriberg, and Darrell Gould. The show was one of the most successful productions ever put on by a Waltham High class. The proceeds went to replenish the treasury of the Exchange Student Fund. The exchange fund was further increased by W.H.S.'s second Share in Democracy campaign, which, with the aid of an ex-exchange student, Peter Diepold of Germany, and our last summer exchange student to Switzerland, Nick Cannistraro, was quite successful, enabling us to continue this invaluable program for international under- standing. The senior year was climaxed in May by the biggest social event of our high school careers, the Senior Prom. It was -a fitting close to three of the most enjoyable and profitable years of our lives. Now as we look back on all the wonderful times we have had as sophomores, juniors, and finally seniors, we are indeed sorry to end our happy years. Nevertheless, we are about to leave Waltham High School, where a tireless and devoted faculty has guided our footsteps since 1954. At that moment, my mental meanderings were shattered by the buzzing of my Beninati Blastograph, and, as I flipped the switch, Secretary Cunningham's voice could be heard loud and clear. She had a message from the mayor to report to his charming penthouse office immediately. I wondered what Mayor Connors could possibly want me for now, but as I donlned my new coat and hat, straight from Senior's Department Store and created by that prominent fashion designer, Pat Cantor, my worries vanished momentarily. Running through my office and hustling down the stairs, I hurriedly decided to 'take my Gaeta sports car, as my Collins Cadillac was being washed at Gerry Feeley's gas station. ' I hopped in and madly raced down Church Street. Rounding the corner, I narrowly missed a collision with the mad and mighty millionaire, Norman Sheingold, who was being tailed by policeman, Terry Gallagher, flying by with his siren blaring. I slowed down to wave to Cal Flanigan, who had finally returned home after attempting to swim the Panama Canal fourteen times. She, in turn, was chatting with Phyllis Bourgeois, who had recently been nominated Miss March of Dollars. As I rode along, I heard a loud blast overhead and looked up in wonderment. .letting off above was an Andrews Autonomic airplane trailing a sign advertising that newest of new movies, The Questrom Quandary, in Vasalotti-Vision directed by Miss Astrid Collin, that famous Norwegian motion picture executive. Oh! I thought, At last! The Connors' manor, which had been built on the old Waltham High School site. I pulled into a parking lot, ascended a thousand marble stairs, and gingerly rapped at the towering white portals. The mayor's extra-private secretary, Bob Hartley, greeted me solemnly at the door and asked me, with greatest reserve, if I were expected. I nodded in answer and then closed the door behind me. I was asked to sit in a delightful waiting room where I glanced through a copy of Chaisson's Chatterings, in which I learned of socialite Sally Ann Dam's planetary tour in a latest of late LaRosee Lunar Space Ships piloted by Elsa Range, first woman to circle the globe in forty-five minutes. Presently I stood in an enormous room, and the mayoris voice boomed from somewhere in the shadows. Twenty years has passed, and it's high time for a class reunion. Since you are a traveling joumalist, I ask you to take the job of rounding up all members of the Class of 1957 and asking them to join us. I shoved my Basle Bubble gum into my other cheek and hastened to reply, I'll do my best, Your Honor! And do my best I did, for the following day I was ushered into a turbo hydraulic jet and shot off to my first landmark, New York City. We wheeled in at Diatom Durkee's Airfield just fifteen minutes after the hour of departure, and I was bustled into a cobalt cab, which was driven by Leo Sullivan. Giving him the chief executive's message, I climbed out at the Waldorf Astoria, where I was greeted cheerily by Alice Parlee, hostess at that famous hotel. As we chatted I relayed my invitation. Alice was delighted to accept, and she promised to call Eileen Charboneau at Charboneau's Chiffonier, an exclusive clothing salon. I made a date to join them for dinner at the Copacabana, later that day. Dinner proved perfectly delightful served in elegant style by waiter-in-chief, Arthur Marion. I excused myself as soon as possible, for a glance at my watch told me my work was waiting. Hustling through the heavy New York traffic, I bumped smack into Brenda Mason at Squireis Square. She was on her way, with her latest book on child psychology clutched under her arm, to the office of that personable publisher, Lois Weinstein. Hastily presenting her with an invitation, I went on my way asking directions as I jogged along. Finding that I made no time walking as I was, I paused momentarily and slipped on my Reardon Rocket Roller Skates and whizzed along at top speed. I shifted my skates into PARK and came to a halt in front of the Richard Hayes multi- million dollar office building, which had been constructed by Orville Brown Builders, Inc. Shifting into FLIGHT gear, I skated up fourteen stories where I came upon a door marked Economic Eutronic Engineering, Skip Gray, President. I whipped out my doyle Devious Deeds Detector and flashed it on the office door. The door opened, of course, and I made my way into the office. There confronting me was the receptionist, Diane Davis, who asked me please to remove my roller skates before I advanced any further. Doing as I was asked, I requested an immediate audience with the president. Diane led me into a room furnished in an all-modern black and white fashion, Behind their black desks, fifteen secretaries dressed all in white pounded away on their little black Vasile Vooming Velocity typewriters, doing approximately 230 words per minute. Among them I recognized Leona Pouliot, Patty Martin, Ann Neffinger, and Connie Leonard. As I blasted an X-ray from my Super-Sonic-Seeing eye machine, I noticed that President Gray's office was empty. I left several notes of invitation on his desk, grabbed my skates, and rolled on to the nearest hotel. As I whizzed along the street, an ambulance flew by with Bobby Champion driving. Nurse Nancy Milligan and Doctor David Scott were administering band-aids to the patient patient John Ricci, who found that traveling in an ambulance was the quickest way of arriving at all the pro-basketball games in Madison Square Garden, where he was star rebounder for the famous New York Knickerbockers. I waved some invitations at them, but they passed me by sight unseen. Being a little weary in both mind and limb, I wheeled up to the Sheraton-Plaza, where doorman John McDonald greeted me and let me pass through the solid glass doorway. At the desk I saw Ronald Cannistraro asking me to register. I very soon found myself settled comfortably in my room, where I pressed a bedside button and a psycho-beam television set floated down from the ceiling. My thought waves selected my desired channel, and I settled back to enjoy a good show. A blare of color, a shout of trumpets lin stereophonic sound, of coursel heralded the be- ginning of the Martha Sinclair I-lour sponsored by the Lennox-Charlton Electronic Brain Com- pany. Emcee Eddy Venini came into view and announced the Gail Gustavson ballet troupe which was visiting the United States on their world tour. Dazzled by the magnificance of their performance, I was further amazed when I saw Jean Lally demonstrating the methods of Italian cooking on a competing channel. I at once snatched my black book and, pen in hand, scratched Jean's name in among the other names of all those I had yet to reach for the reunion. I decided to make Chicago my first stop the next day, but, because of the late hour, I switched off the television setg tucking my black book and my worries under my pillow, I was swept off to sleep. The next morning 'bright and early I made arrangements with the Castellano Helicopter Company to fly me to Chicago. My flight was timed for exactly 9:06, and at 9:05 I raced up the spiral staircase to the rooftop of the hotel just in time to see the hydrorocket winging into view. As the plane landed, I was delighted to note the hearty crew that would guide me safely to the great city on the shores of Lake Michigan. Bob Recine was piloting our ship, Ron Morreale was co-pilot, and John Slash McDonnell was at the traffic directional signals waving his hockey stick for all right and left turns. Barry Fahey and Jackie Mattson were the me- chanics aboard, and Jeannette Warren, the hostess. We took off quickly for the home of the Cubs and the White Sox, and within a few short minutes, we arrived at Midway Field. Rocketing had been marvelous, but it was mild compared to the Sawicki Scooter that shot me across town. We passed the deserted stockyards. No one needed meat anymore since those miraculous compounded meat and vegetable pills invented by scientist Janice Thompson had appeared on the market. I went straightaway to George Caldwell Construction Engineering Company, where he and David Hart gladly accepted my invitation to our reunion. My next stop was the Loop, where, amidst flashing neon signs and crowds of hustling people, I met the top rung of the Chicago society ladder, Nancy Kempton, out walking her four white poodles. She said she'd try and fit our get-together into her busy schedule and she would also do me the favor of wiring Martha Garrahan, an English professor at the University of Illinois, for my time was running out fast and like Cinderella I would have to be back in Waltham by the following evening at midnight. Tempus was fugiting quickly, and at seven bells I was in New Orleans. None of the age-old charm had faded since my last visit there. The lovely Spanish moss hung lazily from the cypress trees, and in the violet twilight, it seemed one of the most beautiful places on earth. Yet I had little time left for scenery, so I hustled myself into a rented Millar Motorcycle and scooted off through the French Quarter to call on Mary Curtin, who was in port after touring the world in her rocket yacht. On my way to the harbor I spotted Anita Levensaler, world's woman tennisfchamp, with her coach Mary Ellen Scott, bouncing a ball off the side of the Ray Sicotte Sports' Arena. She waved gaily, and with a 'weak underhander I tossed them an invitation, which she caught with her excellent form. Deciding I'd have to mail all other notifications for this area, I scuttled back to the heli- copter and once more was on my way. We took our time flying westward to view some of the breathtaking scenery. We were darting in and out between all sorts of skyscrapers when I spotted a flag pole with a very ornamental top. But no! It wasn't an ornamental top! It was Priscilla Caie, world renowned flag pole, sitter. Hardly had I recovered from my surprise, when we landed in the parking lot of Madeline Cacciatore's bakery in San Francisco, California. I tucked my little message in her mailbox and hurried off on my tour of the city. I rounded the corner of Powell and Sutter Streets where I ran into Dick Cavanaugh and Francis Rheaume welding a mechanical defect in George Enman's printing press. Gordon Lewis was standing by in case he should be needed for a little repair work after the boys were through. I distributed envelopes among them after a little chat and hustled off down the steep, winding street. .lust ahead I spotted the very place I'd been searching for, Helen Smith's Theatrical Agency where Barbara Keefe and Lynn Spaulding were busy checking over a script for Barbara Klimoski's latest play, Did You Notice? I slipped in, left a few reunion cards, and shuffled out unnoticed. I had one more call to make in this lovely, old-fashioned, yet ultra-modern city and that was at Alan Wiggetman's personally owned BANK OF AMERICA. As the heels of my Kay Peel designed shoes clicked across the marble floor, Ruth Greaves and Ellen Austin looked up in annoyance from the counted piles of money which vice president Lee Healey was distributing and then bent their heads once again over their work. I looked sheepishly around and stepped right on the toe of that fabulous actress, Rosemarie Smith, Mumbling humble apologies as I bent to brush off her shoes, I glanced up in time to catch Dick Simeone depositing the daily take from his uranium fuel station. Excited at seeing so many prospects at once, I just casually heaved a handful of reunion invitations in the air and strolled out. Before I could wave at Maryalice Tuite, who was passing by on her daily route digging up news for her gossip column, Tuite's Twitteringsf' I found myself back in the helicopter racing towards Seattle, Washington. Staring in awe at the ethereal beauty of the azure blue Rockies below, I uttered an ex- clamation of surprise. There below me were Barbara McDermott and Pat Hayes, standing atop a lofty peak, en- joying their hobby of mountain climbing. While they waved their alpenstocks at me, I tossed several of the cards out the window along with an English grammar book for Pat, who always relished good reading. The fabulous views below kept me enraptured until we landed on a giant sequoia tree, dis- embarked, and climbed through the thick branches down the trunk. At last reaching the ground, I was delighted to find another of the long chain of Cross Diners, where Carolyn 0'Connell and Georgia Cross served me a cup of delicious hot coffee. Upon inquiring how business was, I was both pleased and a little envious at their reply that my dime put them over the million dollar mark. After their kind service, I slipped two invites under my plate and skipped out, whizzing al6ng once again on my rocket skates. I needed them badly over this rugged but beautiful terrain which all but took my breath away in more ways than one. Seattle proved to be a dazzling city, skyscrapers and homes doing their best to emulate the lofty eminence of the majestic Mount Rainier. As I whizzed along, I felt a distinct tap on my shoulderg and stepping on the brakes of my rocket skates, I turned around into the smiling faces of Pat Docherty and Judy Emerson, dressed like twins in their policewomen uniforms. They had attained the distinction of being the first airplane traffic policewomen in the United States, I was delighted to learn. Upon bidding them a fond adieu, I shifted my skates into GLIDE and coasted all the way down Harris Childs Street, which had been named for the great philanthropist and old Waltham High scholar. As I skated along on the trolley tracks, I spotted Martha Fisher and Nancy Jacobs chatting with Sandy Wolcott and Dottie Sullivan about the good old days at Waltham High, I presumed. I retraced my steps and hustled over to join the group. They proceeded to tell me of their wonderful jobs in the Ray Campbell office building, where they were all assistants to the assistant vice president of the corporation, John Picard. Giving them my congratulations and gilt-edged reunion announcements, we, my skates and I, sped away. Suddenly I heard the cry of a paper boy flying by on a uranium racer with his loudspeaker blaring the news that Ginny Baillargeon and Jean Conti had dazzled the notables at Radio City Music Hall with their spectacular song and dance act. I was very happy for them and wished I could stroll once again through Times Square in all its electrical glory and deliver Mayor Connors' message. Oh well, I needn't delay any further. My assignment was completed, and it was time to return home to Waltham. My skates out of fuel, foot-weary and sleepy-eyed, I climbed for the last time into the helicopter, where kind stewardess Phyllis Taranto placed a foam-rubber pillow under my head. New crew members Duble, Shreenan, and Robbins took over the ship with capable hands and buzzed off in the direction of our beloved Boston, and I, lulled by the rocket's gentle whooshing sound, fell off to sleep. Back home again, mission accomplished, I deposited my leftover invitations in my file under the heading REUNIONS and my rocket roller skates under MEMORABLE TRIPS. Though weary and footworn, I realized that the future years would be filled with happy thoughts of my dear old 1957 classmates at Waltham High School and pleasant memories of my never-to-be-forgotten journey Roundabout America. By SHIRLEY FITZ-GERALD Assisted by PATRICIA HAYES LEE HEALEY NANCY KEMPTON BARBARA KLIMOSKI CLASS ILL 1957 Fast coming to a close is a year filled with the memories that we, the Class of 1957, have acquired of a dedicated school. a school dedicated to the proposition that you must earn your graduation. From these hallowed halls we march with our heads held high and our report cards waving like banners in a summer day's breeze. May these bequests be received by the underclassmen in silent gratitude for the un- bounded generosity of an unselfish Senior Class, which, for the first time in three years, is giving something besides advice. May our presentations to the faculty be remembered as gifts which we feel they must have but which we could never bestow upon them before this special day. Being of sound minds falthough there were several attempts to disprove thisj and healthy bodies fdespite the crowded lunch periodsl, we leave these, our last and earthly possessions. To Mr. Sheehy. our beloved headmaster, we give our heartfelt and sincere thanks for the patience and understanding with which he has guided us through three trying yet wonderful years. To Mr. May, our genial master. we bequeath the spirit of 1957. May room 211 be overflowing with joyful students who also possess this spirit. For the benefit of our submasters, Messrs. Morang and Hood, we leave, period. For Miss Flagg we have secured one dozen Cash McCalls. These are shrewd business men who will suggest many helpful money-making tips to the business pupils and prospective executives. To Miss Babb we present a giant alarm clock to wake up those victims of iron- deficiency anemia who attend her cooking classes. To Mrs. Flynn, our capable teacher-librarian, we deliver a set of 5,000 watt search- lights for the library in hopes that the Class of 1958 may write the Mirror without undue eye strain. For Mr. Pettinati we leave a ten years' supply of Geritol. May he use it wisely. Mrs. Gabriel is promised one of the most brilliant art students ever to attend Waltham High, Vincent Van Gogh XXX. To our beleaguered matrons and maintenance men we deed a clean school in perfect repair. We direct that our thanks be expressed to the ladies in the kitchen who, for three food-filled years, have remembered that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. For the use of the teachers in the third floor, Miss Hirst, Mr. Morang, Mr. Yetten, and Mr. Avery, we install a self-service elevator. This bequest needs no explanation. For Mr. MacArthur we plan a small swimming pool stocked with 36-inch trout. This property is to be located in the back of his homeroom. No longer will he tell of the big ones that got away. To Miss Gearan we will George Whoduzzit, who digests all the leading cartoons and editorials and devours all the news Fit to Print. To calm his nerves while riding in the driver education car, an automobile with a built-in coffee percolator will be custom-designed for Mr. Perkins. To Mr. Brucchi, head of auto mechanics at the Trade School, we donate a brand new take-apart Cadillac. Now our future mechanics will learn in style. Mr. Hoyle, another one of our unsung Trade School heroes, will inherit a class of mechanical geniuses who know automobiles backwards. We bequeath to Mr. Westall, in gorgeous Cinemascope and glorious technicolor, a brand new gift-wrapped Trade School. A new gadget, the mechanical pen that writes only the first letter of the alphabet, is our remembrance for Mr. Boothroyd. Thus he is sure to have a class of All A seniors. The athletic department inherits Franken Stein, the most versatile athlete ever to attend any school. We leave to Mr. Smyth a law book in which every word has only one syllable. fAgain we seniors are accused of semi-illiteracy.J A time clock goes to Miss McQuarrie. Now all of her homeroom girls will be on time. To Miss Grover a fifty gallon drum of glue. Also a ten million page pamphlet en- titled Business Reports U.S.A. Mr. Woodman, the W.H.S. financial tycoon and treasurer of our sports events, gets his dream boat, a Brink's armored car complete with armed guards and padlocked money bags. For Miss Betts we've ordered three hundred copies of Fractured French, a book written for the sole purpose of Americanizing Francais or Francaisanizing Americang no one's quite sure which. One million dollars in scholarships for those underclassmen whose brilliance should not go unrewarded we remand to the use of the Guidance Department. To the juniors we leave a faculty that has just finished a year with us seniors. Look out, juniors! To the sophomores we leave nothing. Whatever they get in the next two years they'll have to earn. This younger generation has it too easy anyway! As co-executors of this will we appoint Mr. Eames, Mr. Curry, and Mrs. Keenan, who have witnessed our signature thereof in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven.
