Being rafher vain. I decided 'io remove a Iiffle dusf from 'lhis familiar glass fo see if af fhe half cenfury I appear any differenf fhan usual. Thaf fhere is a difference is apparenf as soon as I see my reflecfion. In facf, so many changes have faken place fhis year fhaf I can scarcely recognize myself. The baske+balI Team ThaT year shared W.H.S. sporTs honors wiTh The Babe RuThs of WaITham High, who Tied wiTh ArlingTon and NewTon Tor TirsT place in The sTruggle Tor base- ball supremacy. j 54 Class Histor May came bringing The birds, The bees, and our Sophomore Hop. Traces oT junior high days appeared as we saT sTaring like sTone sTaTues aT one anoTher, girls on one side, boys on The oTher. Looking back on ThaT TirsT year, l have oTTen wondered if we, The Class oT l95O, had anyThing To do wiTh The deparTure oT Mr. Goodrich Trom These hallowed halls. However Thai' may be, we ourselves deparTed Trom The ranks oT sopho- mores and became juniors. ThaT Tall, much To our disappoinTmenT, we Tound ThaT The school had noT jusT walked away buT was sTill in iTs Tamiliar place, This year under a new headmasTer, Mr. HuTTg so once again we donned our Thinking caps and Tell inTo The old rouTine. Taking Time ouT Trom our sacred duTy oT mak- ing The sophomores miserable, we proceeded To elecT The lucky Tour who would guide us Through The Trials and TribulaTions oT The coming year. HighesT honors wenT again To Joe Levey. while Barbara SmiTh, Arlene Kelley, and ThelberT Eccles were chosen vice-presidenT, secreTary- Treasurer, and audiTor, respecTively. DespiTe objecTions Trom an all-male jury, skirTs became longer and hair became shorTer. How- ever, no change was observed in The boys' fashions: panTs were unpressed, Ties were ouT- moded, and shoes were unpolished, The TooTball season sTarTed wiTh a bang and ended wiTh a Thud, while The hockey season 'iever goT sTarTed. However, The baskeTball Team made up Tor iT all, reaching The Tech Tourney Tor iTs Third consecuTive year. AlThough his ardenT WalTham Tan club deserTed him, Ronnie Perry in The Tinals sparked his Somerville Team To a vicTory over WalTham, 36 To 24. ThaT spring, aTTer much deliberaTion on The parT oT our Teachers, Tive per cenT oT our class and TiTTeen per cenT oT The Class oT '49 were chosen as The TirsT WalTham High School mem- bers oT The NaTional Honor SocieTy. WiTh a very impressive ceremony These disTinguished pupils were Tormally iniTiaTed in April, in Hovey Memorial beTore The enTire sTudenT body. On The nighT oT May 20, in our spring-like gym, decoraTed by Roy Kelley, his hard-working commiTTee, and all oThers who wanTed To geT ouT oT class, a wondrous TransTormaTion Took place when The boys and girls oT The Class oT l95O suddenly became young ladies and genTle- men, Tor ThaT was The nighT oT our Junior Prom. However, The highlighT oT ThaT year was noT our prom, as you mighT expecT, buT The day The seniors received Their diplomas, leaving us To wear Their crowns and reign over our lowly sub- ordinaTes, The iuniors. Now ThaT we were seniors, Things really began To happen. For The TirsT Timie in The hisTory OT WalTham High School, we had a STudenT Council under The leadership and guidance oT Joe Levey and Mr. EllioTT. ln The hockey world There was also a greaT change when a previously unsuc- cessTul Team won six games. The TooTball and baskeTball squads were in Top Torm as usual, Mr. Fishers eleven losing only To ArlingTon and Mr. Quinn's boys again enTering The Tech Tour- ney. Our TooTball sTars really made The head- lines when six oT Them played on The vicTorious Suburban League All-STars and earned a Trip To CharloTTe, NorTh Carolina, where, amidsT Their pillow TighTs and parTies, They managed To spend a Tew minuTes on The playing Tield To deTeaT The SouThern Team 39-6. Bobby McCue, our Three sporTs sTar, cerTainly gave greaT compeTi- Tion To Bugs Bunny and John L. Lewis, consider- ing The number oT Times his name appeared in newsprinT. lncidenTally he was capTain oT The NorThern All-STars and was accompanied by Dick Collins, Joe Terrasi, Joe Levey, Tony Rando and Roy Tiano. Even on The culTural side changes were noTed. The DramaTic Club, Tor The TirsT Time in several years, produced a Three-acT play, STage Door, sTarring DoTTie Olney, Mimi CasTellana and Richard KeiTh, while our school magazine, com- monly known as The Mirror, underwenT several maior operaTions-all successTul. General John Daddona was chosen leader oT The Senior Army This year and guided us successTully Through The closing baTTles oT The War oT l950. Awarded The Congressional Medal oT Honor Tor bravery above and beyond The call oT duTy was Colonel Roy Tiano, vice-presidenT. The Good-ConducT Medal was given To Ser- geanT ThelberT Eccles, our audiTor: and aT The same Time, The Sharp-ShooTer's Medal was awarded To Buck PrivaTe Grace EllioTT, our' secreTary-Treasurer. There were many oT royal blood in our midsT This pasT year: Janis Horch, The girl Trom Wis- consin, was crowned queen oT The Mardi Gras, a mosT successTul and colorTul masquerade, sponsored by The ArT and DramaTic Clubs: and AlTa Lee Sapp was voTed WalTham's Miss March oT Dimes Tor l95O. On The memorable nighT oT February I7, our beauTiTul senior girls wiTh sTars in Their eyes, and our handsome senior boys wiTh Their heads in The clouds, danced To The romanTic sTrains of STardusT and oTher lovely melodies. Under a sparkling array oT sTars, which Turned our gym inTo a glisTening wonderland, Dick Collins, as chairman, led The grand march oT The besT Senior Dance ever held. Joe Egan had a perTecT opporTuniTy To dis- play his naTural abiliTies as The comic lead in The Senior Play, ThaT BrewsTer Boy. When one considers ThaT The acTors and acTresses were members oT The Class oT l95O, The direcTor was Mr. Nelson, and The Chairman was Claire Miele, iT is no surprise ThaT The play was such a hiT. And now, as TorTy-nine classes since The birTh oT The TwenTieTh cenTury have done beTore us, we are already To graduaTe. Perhaps we appear slighTly diTTerenT Trom Those who have preceded us: perhaps our ideas are more modern: buT in our hearTs we experience The same emoTions as They. We Teel The idenTical pangs oT sadness as we look back on The Tech Tourneys, crowded caTeTerias, high school proms, and sTudy periods, which Trom now on will be only happy memories. And we experience The same Teelings oT ioy as we look Torward To successful careers and homes oT our own, knowing ThaT all we have gained in WalTham High School-knowledge, Tolerance, and leadership- will give us a beTTer prepara- Tion Tor Taking our places in The world as ex- emplary young men and women. As I was preparing lo board lhe lrain, I was nol lo be disappoinled, lor lhere, slanding in a smarl looking conduclor's unilorm and cap down over his ears, was Billy Slumpl. Trying lo win his lavor, I said, l'Ii, Bill! bul all he said was All Aboard . I guess he didn'l recognize me. Feeling deiecled, I relirecl lo my privale car where Barbara Smilh, my privale secrelary, inlormed me lhal lhere were lwo senalors lo see me. As I enlered lhe smoking car I was greeled by Dennis lvIcl.ean and Charlie Barry, senalors from Massachusells, and Palricia Coluci, a member ol lhe House ol Represenla- lives from Massachusells also. As we were aboul lo slarl discussing polilical mallers, I received a phone call from Dan Bushey. l'Ie had heard ol my planned lrip lo Calilornia, and having his own radio slalion, inviled me lo visil him. I-le also inlormed me lhal working wilh him were Roberl Aucoin and Leonard Websler, whose voices had been judged America's No. I lvlonolones. I accepled lhe invilalion and re- lurned lo lhe dining car. As I enlered I noliced a greal deal ol commo- lion al lhe larlher end and became very inler- esled in whal was going on. There, lrying lo eal his breaklasl, was Frank IvIcCoole, an up and coming lelevision slar, being swarmed by a crowd ol aulograph seekers, among whom I recognized lhal world lamous lion lamer, Joyce Bowman, Winilred Brown, lhe sensalional woman speculalor ol Wall Slreel, and Marion Uhlin, head ol lhe Business.deparlmenl al Wallham l'Iigh,School. Sealing mysell, I was approached by a charming wailress whom I lhoughl I recog- nized. Aller giving her my order I suddenly remembered her name, il was Audrey Breaull. We were coming inlo Chicago where lhe lrain was lo slop lor lwenly minules. As I was gel- ling ready lo leave, I saw Waller Welch cleaning lhe lables in lhe dining car assisled by Daniel Senior. Slepping oll lhe lrain I was approached by Roy Tiano, who was singing lhal once popu- lar song, Challanooga Shoe Shine Boy . Look- ing very suspiciously al my shoes, he asked if I wanled a shine. I indicaled lhal I did, and as he was busily working over my shoes, he asked il I had heard ol Bob lvIcCue's successlul season ol coaching al Brown Universily. I lold him I had and by lhis lime he had linished making a hole in lhe rag and I gave him a live-dollar bill. l'le lhanked me and lhrusl lhe money inlo his pockel belore I had a chance lo change my mind. Afler our sighlseeing lrip which look all day, we ar- rived al lhe lelevision slalion an hour early. Nexl on lhe program sponsored by lhe Safely Driving Council were Dorolhy Sullivan and Suzelle Bonfilio, who gave a wonderful lalk on how lo drive carefully and whal will happen if you don'l. Afler giving my speech and receiving lhe well wishes of everyone in lhe slalion, we deparled for a quiel evening al lhe Greasy Spoon dining palace. Ralph lBob Flopel Newcomb, and Joseph Wills, lhe greal magician, plus his aide, glamorous Gloria Thompson. The nexl day was eleclion day, and all over lhe counlry people lurned oul lo vole. As I was silling by my radio Iislening lo lhe eleclion resulls, in walked Charles Doucell and Anlhony Anlico wilh morning papers from all over lhe counlry.
