The 1957 Blue Devil football team finished third in the 7B district with a 2-2-1 record. It was one of the toughest schedules ever undertaken by a Walters High team. Among our ten op- ponents, five were in the playoffs for state championships. Hobart, Tipton, Fredrick, Grandfield, and Lawton Douglass were conference champions and Marlow was certainly one of the strongest teams in the area. Fullback Frank Parks was the team's leading scorer. End Ronald Red Elk and Tackle Buddy Hilbert were honorary captains for the season. Red Elk, Hilbert, Parks, Guard Bob Shelly, End Junior Oberly, and Halfback Billy Grimes were named to the official all-conference team. Ten Seniors played their last season for WHS. Besides those named all-conference, the others were Center George Moon, Fullback Mickey Titchywy, Tackle Roy Williams, and Tackle Gary Hertzler. x Q' NX1 .fl Frank Parks rs tackled by a Douglas player whrle Tony Pulrs strlkes a famrlrar pose on the ground Gary Hertzler Buddy Hrlbert and Junror Oberly come over to help on the play - gt-,. ,I , . At Iowa Park the band received first place trophy in the marching contest and fourth place trophy in concert playing. At the State Fair the band received a second place trophy in the opening day parade. The band participated at all football games even to the extent of sending a nine piece band to the Waurika game when school was out because of the flu. The Jazz Band had a very active part in the Lions Club Negro Minstrel and the March of Dimes Telethon. It also advertised for the Walters Rodeo. A Calypso band was organized and presented a number of fine programs. The band participated in the Cameron Band Clinic and the Lawton High School Band Clinic. Joan Nichols and Bob Jones represented the Walters Band at the Oklahoma State University Band Clinic in December. Joan Nichols played clarinet in the All-State Concert Band and Terry Mead played corner in the All-State Symphonic Band. The band entered the District Music Contest at Cameron in March and the State contest at Oklahoma University in April. In our annual magazine drive, Terry Mead was high salesman and Janie Todd was second.
