Sr. Class- '56-'57 Chairman of Property and Makeup Maudie and the Opposite Sex - '55- '56 Paper Staff-'55- '56 Shakespeare has said, All the worldfs a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. Our stage was the Walters Public School, the time was September, 1945. As this first scene in the second act of life opened, we saw a group of half excited, half frightened youngsters beginning their school career. During this time we made many new friends, and old friendships grew stronger. We play- ed Bear by the old tin houseg we had our first soft- ball teams and played in the grade school tournaments. Before we knew it, this first scene came to an end, we were in our last year of grade school. That year we had our very own pet show and art contest on the top floor of the old grade school building. Then came the big moment, sixth grade graduation, with the girls in flowers and frills and the boys in their suits and ties. The next scene opened and we were right in the big middle of crowded halls, changing classes every hour, going to our lockers, and learning to work those combination locks. But something was missing, we no longer had those recesses we had gotten so used to in the past six years. When the last scene of this act began, we were too engrossed in the fact that we were now high school students to think of it as the last scene. Our Sopho- more year we moved into the nice new building of which we were so proud. That year we had our first opportunity to participate in the all-school play, I Remember Mama . Also several of us were asked to Serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet, whose theme was Hitch Your Wagon to a Star , which meant more excitement. Our Junior year we gave our first class play, Maudie and the Opposite Sex , and worked on concession stands to finance the Junior-Senior Banquet. The banquet was the high light of the whole year. We tried something entirely new by having the banquet in the patio. As we sat under the star-lit sky, it took only a little imagination to feel that we were in some quaint cafe on the side- walks of Paris. Then came the graduation of the class of '56 and several of us were asked to serve as ushers. At last we were at the top, we were seniors, but somehow we didn't feel as big as we thought we would. We got our rings and pictures, then came the Senior Play, our last school play. We measured for caps and gowns, our announcements were ordered, and we sent them out. The Juniors gave us a wonder- ful banquet, for once we had no worries, no doubts or fears of things not coming off just right, we were the guests of honor. Then there was Baccalaureate and Commencement. As the diplomas were handed out, memories of good times of our past school days came back to us and of all the new friends we had made as well as all the old ones like Carolyn Daniel, Becky Davis, Earnest Dunbar, Iva Rae Eder, Freddie Durbin, Rheu Nell Fudge, Marguaritta Gonzales, George Harris, Dewayne High, Kay Hilbert, Freddie Houston, Donald Logan, Jerry Nance, Maxine Phillips, Shirley Ratliff, Gayle Reece, Hazel Veach, Elmer Weryavah, Lindel Zachary, who began here on that fall day in 1945 and were finishing here at this Commencement. The curtains came down on the final scene but not on the final act, for there are many more to come in our lives.
