They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. Our stage was the Walters Public School, the time was September, 1945. As this first scene in the second act of life opened, we saw a group of half excited, half frightened youngsters beginning their school career. During this time we made many new friends, and old friendships grew stronger. We play- ed Bear by the old tin houseg we had our first soft- ball teams and played in the grade school tournaments. Before we knew it, this first scene came to an end, we were in our last year of grade school. That year we had our very own pet show and art contest on the top floor of the old grade school building. Then came the big moment, sixth grade graduation, with the girls in flowers and frills and the boys in their suits and ties. The next scene opened and we were right in the big middle of crowded halls, changing classes every hour, going to our lockers, and learning to work those combination locks. But something was missing, we no longer had those recesses we had gotten so used to in the past six years. When the last scene of this act began, we were too engrossed in the fact that we were now high school students to think of it as the last scene. Our Sopho- more year we moved into the nice new building of which we were so proud. That year we had our first opportunity to participate in the all-school play, I Remember Mama . Also several of us were asked to Serve at the Junior-Senior Banquet, whose theme was Hitch Your Wagon to a Star , which meant more excitement. Our Junior year we gave our first class play, Maudie and the Opposite Sex , and worked on concession stands to finance the Junior-Senior Banquet. The banquet was the high light of the whole year. We tried something entirely new by having the banquet in the patio. As we sat under the star-lit sky, it took only a little imagination to feel that we were in some quaint cafe on the side- walks of Paris. Then came the graduation of the class of '56 and several of us were asked to serve as ushers. At last we were at the top, we were seniors, but somehow we didn't feel as big as we thought we would. We got our rings and pictures, then came the Senior Play, our last school play. We measured for caps and gowns, our announcements were ordered, and we sent them out. The Juniors gave us a wonder- ful banquet, for once we had no worries, no doubts or fears of things not coming off just right, we were the guests of honor. Then there was Baccalaureate and Commencement. As the diplomas were handed out, memories of good times of our past school days came back to us and of all the new friends we had made as well as all the old ones like Carolyn Daniel, Becky Davis, Earnest Dunbar, Iva Rae Eder, Freddie Durbin, Rheu Nell Fudge, Marguaritta Gonzales, George Harris, Dewayne High, Kay Hilbert, Freddie Houston, Donald Logan, Jerry Nance, Maxine Phillips, Shirley Ratliff, Gayle Reece, Hazel Veach, Elmer Weryavah, Lindel Zachary, who began here on that fall day in 1945 and were finishing here at this Commencement. The curtains came down on the final scene but not on the final act, for there are many more to come in our lives. , , 9 4 --:r ' f5T:'3 -- X ' V -N W1 ' TSW i rm i I S. As I boarded the rocket ship Blue Devil ' desigied and manufactured by Peterman Ford Motor Company operated and owned by RONNIE PETERMAN, I was quite pleasantly surprised to find EMMA PHILLIPS pri vate secretary to JIMMY JENNINGS famed astronomer who had discovered an unknown planet and named lt SR 57 occupying the seat next to mine Emma and I began toremmisceabout old times and to inquire of each other as to the whereabouts and oc cupations of all our former classmates From talking to Emma I found that a great number of our past stu dents were moving to SR 57 to establish businesses I asked about the nightlife at the planet and found out that so far only one nightclub had been fotmded This was the B1g D1pper owned by those two play boys and successful bachelors DE WAYNE HIGH and KENNETH SIMPSON They had employed several of my classmates MARGUARITT A GONZALES and SHIRLEY RAT LIFF were m the Chorus Lme while GEORGE HARRIS was the chef All at once from the front of the ship came a loud cheer and I looked forward to see several young men yelling at the top of their lxmgs Emma told me that they were the famed SR 57 Comets DON JACKSON who had been a big success on Planet Earth as a professional football player had gone to SR 57 to try his luck at coachlng MAX GOOD and EARL SHANNON had Joined partnersl1lps and started a rather large project for their con struction company Their goal was to build a larger dam than Grand Coulee and to span a bridge from SR 57 to Earth FRED DURBIN and JERRY PHILLIPS were the most successful farmers on the new planet Fred owned a chicken farm and used robots for farm hands This cut his expenses somewhat Jerry was a big Angus ranch er and was working on a new breed of cattle JERRY NANCE was a noted test driver and was trying out LINDEL and RAY ZACHARY S new automobile which ran on water The only poss1.b1e trouble they might have with this experiment is that water IS scarce on the planet JAMES SUSON who had made the army his career and his breadticket was the commander of the armed forces LLOYD FLETCHER worked hand m hand with James by bemg Commanding Officer of the National Guard Branch on SR 57 FREDDIE HOUSTON was a big producer of a telev1s1on show which played only bop music His ch1ef ad vertlsmg scheme was that of men s nylons ELMER MOE WERYAVAH was his leading leg model AUBREY BELKNAP the only television repairman on SR 57 had a thriving business DON LOGAN came up with a new invention, the double jointed cigar one end for chewing the other or smoking Don was president of the company while SHERRY THOMPSON was vice pres1dent and handled the financial department About this time the stewardess walked down the aisle and I recognized her as MRS BETTY DUNBAR Betty stopped to chat for awhile and we found out that our ship was being piloted by her husband EARNEST The handsome co pilot we had farled to recognize was GARY DAGE IVA RAE EDER was the ship s nurse By this time we had landed on SR 57 and Emma asked me to have a cup of tea with her in the Olde Tea Shoppe operated by MRS ROZELLE WHITE and MR JAMES BRADFORD Emma explamed that they had as to he near their dear old students The shop was being patronlzed by several different people whom I remembered and inquired about their stations m life MRS PAT ZACHARY and her twelve children were havmg an afternoon snack while DIANA ANDERSON and FERN BLYTHE were havmg lunch D1ana had written a successful book entitled Secrets Men and Fern was the most successful business executive on SR 57 All at once something began to wrap about my leg and I quickly jumped up and heard a little dog howling furiously I found the owner MARY FAY PARKS was a noted Cl11huahua breeder and apologized for steppmg on the dog BECKY DAVIS was with her and I found out that she was the dog s private dentist I was somewhat tired by this tune so I Set forth to explore the f1eld of hotels Finally I found a nice look mg hotel named THE NEPTUNE and entered only to find the proprietors were HAZEL VEACH and DONNA GRUMMON Operating the switchboard as big as you please was that gal from Arkansas WAUHILLA WALT I just happened to run across RHEU NELL F UDGE in the lobby and she started begging me to go with her to a party that nlght I explamed that I had nothing to wear and she immediately recommended an exclusive dress shop owned by MARY KAY CROWLEY and CAROLYN DANIEL I asked her whom the party was for and she explained that it was m honor of TESS WITT SR 57 s Grace Kelly Rheu Nell was an opera singer at night and a music teacher by day She told me that one of my old short hand buddies GAYLE REECE was teachmg shorthand and that BETTY PHILLIPS basketball team had over come Mars and won Universe The party was held in PRICI.LLA RAY S home Priscilla was the wealthy socialite of the time For enter tamment she had hired the famous horn duet consisting of PAT WILLIAMS and KAY HILBERT They were now currently featured at the Big Dipper I excused myself and went to powder my nose I happened to bump into DELORES FIELDING who was gathering Backfence Gossip for The Walters Herald Her collaborator and secretary was KATHERINE PITT MAN Everyone was glad that I had come to establish a newspaper and that my first big feature would cover the visit of the United States President MAXINE PHILLIPS Maxine had fmally achieved her long set goal and won an election to become the first woman president Maxine s traveling party consisted of MARIA MEJIA private secretary and companion ALLAN CHAP MAN accountant and DOYLE MARTIN personal bodyguard SR 57 was really a wonderful new planet and a fine home for such fine people as the graduating class of 1957 Please feel free to visit our planet at any time You will always be welcome Sincerely yours f ,, 1 ,, We have worked very hard to make the junior Class something that we can be proud of. We were proud of all our candidates in the many different activities, and even tho sometimes they didn't win, we were equally as proud of them as the winners were of theirs. Nearly all the juniors have participated in an activity of some kind, and some hold outstanding honors. The high light of the year has been the junior- Senior Banquet. We feel that it is such an honor to work and plan the banquet. We, the juniors', gave our highest ability to make the banquet something that the Seniors' will long remember. The Thespian Troupe has presented this year the All- School Play, Seventeenth Summer, and the Junior Play, Home Sweet Homicide. They also did some good work on the National Education Week Pageant, The American Way. The One Act Contest Play, A Marriage Proposal, by Anton Chekov, was rated Superior in the Conference One-Act Play Contest, and was presented at the State Con- test at Oklahoma University. This food is derived from the many books, magazines, catalogues, and pamphlets from our library. All of these have been catalogued which is of great use to all students. We should use and appreciate this to the best of our ability. In a wheel the hub is the center attraction and the center support. This is true with the library. All the classes and students revolve and work around the library. If it weren't for the library, no one would be able to get reports, themes, and reference work. It also supplies a large number of interesting books which give us all much pleasant reading and enjoyment. It gives all of us librarians much pleasure to receive our pins. We are making plans to raise money for these pins. LIBRARY ClUB Maree, Earlene, and Margaret seem very interested in finding a new book to read. The l956 Blue Devils won 3 games and dropped seven of a schedule which was one of the toughest a Walters team has faced in many years. Several key injuries to players and the inability to have all hands in top shape at one time hampered the team throughout much of the season. I - .fa r. A .... ..,i, ........, .. , Lawton Douglass administered the worst beating, but probably the SCHEDULE outstanding team we faced was a powerful team from Frederick. They We Frederick won the state championship final game by the same score Hobart 0 they defeated us --- 33-0. Tipton In four of the games we lost, the margin of victory was two Velma-Alma touchdowns or less. In two of the losses, the difference was one Temple touchdown and in one the margin was a single point. Frederick Don jackson, Don Logan and Gary Dage, Seniors, were named to Waurika the All-Conference team, and Logan and Jackson were on the All-Area Marlow team. Jackson added further honors by being placed on the All- GIS-Hdfield Southern team selected from all schools in Southern Oklahoma, includ- D0uglaSS ing-all the Oklahoma City High Schools. Logan, Dage, and Elmer Comanche Weryavah were Captains of the team for the season. One of the more unfortunate injuries was a broken collar bone which Jerry Nance received. Jerry received the injury the week before the opening game and missed the whole season.
