. ai- Dedication The Annual Staff considers it an honor and pleasure to dedicate this edition of the Blue Devil to Dr. Mollie Scism in appreciation of the eighteen years she has served on the Board of Education. Twelve of dent of the board. During that time her constant dedication to the task of improving the Wal- ters school system in co- operation with her colleagues and our superintendents has been outstanding. Although not a classroom teacher, she has been our teach- er in setting an example of more intelligent, more thoughtful, more courageous, more virtuous, and more noble living. Dr. Mollie's unfailing sense of humor and her sweet smile will be missed around the con- ference table, but we know she will always be a friend of education. Thank you, Dr. Mollie. Your contribution to our school has been an inspiration to all of us. DR. Questioningly, they beseeched their parents: Why are Seniors? Are they really as important as everyone thinks they are? When assured that seniors were really important people, and that they were important be- cause they had gone long years to school, and that all boys and girls dreamed of the day, when they, too, could be seniors, the little boys and girls resolved that some day they too, would be seniors. And so in September, l9-43, this group of little boys and girls started off to school with the resolve to study long and hard. Each one was scared, but each knew he wasn't the only frightened one. If the teacher had called the roll of the tots who would finish together it might have read something like this: Richard Klein, Don Veach, Lawrence Wil- liams, Shirley King, Martha Phillips, Peggy Span- nagel, Ruth Speir, Gary Gardner, Carl Harris, Leon jackson, Frank Kerr, Billy Landis, Priscilla Cook, Claudette Daniel, Rosie Gonzales, Irene High, Billy Bates, Sherry McDonald, and jurretta Sanders. As little tots in grade school we remember when we used to see the football boys so big and strong, and the home economics girls dressed so pretty, and we wondered if we would ever reach high school. And then suddenly the day came when we graduated from the sixth grade, and we knew we were close to doing the things we had dreamed about so long. Our 7th and 8th grade years were spent getting used to the crowded halls, lockers, and changing of classes. All these were new tasks to us. Then came the year we were called freshmen. That was an important year for us. The boys started playing football and basketball, and the girls started going on trips with the pep club and chorus. And, of course, we got our chance to cook and sew. By the time the year was over we had fallen in love with high school, and eagerly awaited the opening of the sophomore year which passed too soon after it had started. Oh, yes, those gay and never-to-be-forgotten days of being juniors! Through hard work and gay times we won the annual queen race for Priscilla Cook, gave our class play, 'One Foot in Heaven, and honored the seniors with a May Day banquet. While we were juniors we began to realize that not only are seniors important but they have many things to measure up to. Therefore, some of the questions we had asked our parents when we started to school were answering themselves. And parading around in cap and gown here we are today Seniors. The year is almost gone. High school days are almost a thing of the past. It won't be long now until we will all march up on the stage and get that little scroll called a diploma. But even when we seniors get that diploma, we'll never forget the events of our senior year. One memory will be our crowning another annual queen, Sherry McDonald, an honor that by many memories has not been won by a senior class before this year. We also had many other honors. The seniors have tried to do their best this year to make our school one of the best in every way. The four years we have spent in Walters High School will be remembered always and will form a treasured chapter in our book of memories, and we will keep a date - a date with yesterday. 'Cf' 'Six FINCHUM hV'K BU RTON sldent Secretary Treasurer Again, as juniors, we have completed another busy year. The year started with our first ex- periences in the concession stand. We finally ended up serving coffee in sno-cone cups. We didn't make as much money during the football season as we wanted, so we worked during the basketball season. In the midst of this came the school carnival. We worked hard for our candidate and came in second best. Another new experience was to sponsor our play which was DEAR RUTH. lt was a huge success due largely to the hard work of the cast, the crews, and the director. The next new thing was sponsoring the junior- Senior Banquet. As hosts we believe it was a big success and we feel also that our success through the year came as a result of the wonderful help we had from our sponsor, Mr. Varner, and our co-spon- sor, Miss Henderson. As usual our class was well represented in the band, chorus, athletics, dramatics, library, speech, and all the other activities of the school. The junior High Band played for several home junior High football games. An active part was taken in the crowning of their queen. Their special activities included marching in the All-Veterans Day Parade, playing for a junior High assembly program, attending the United States Navy Band Concert at Lawton, entry in the Altus Band Festival and other contests. ' emors The 1954 Blue Devil football squad won five games, lost four, and finished third in the Southem Six Conference. The Devils suffered losses to Marlow and Grandfield in the conference and to Hobart and Tipton outside the conference. lt was an interesting team on the field and displayed a tremendous amount of team spirit and desire. Three of the four losses were by a margin of one touchdown and the three touchdown loss to Marlow was much closer than the score would indicate. In this game the Devils suffered crippling losses to key players in the second half which spoiled their chances for the upset of the year. One of the highlights of the ye ar was a final game of the year against Comanche. Eleven seniors started the game for Walters and played a great deal of the game. Half way through the third quarter Dale Willard, reserve end, picked up an errant fumble and raced 48 yards for the only touchdown of his career. The referee had to come back to the huddle and pry the ball out of Dale's arms in order to resume play of the game. Don Minnich led the team in scoring with 38 points. Coy Bridges tallied 36. THE 1954-55 SEASON The 1954-55 WHS basketball team played probably the toughest and most ambitious schedule ever attempted by the Walters High Team - When the final whistle had blown the record showed 17 wins and 7 losses, the county championship trophy, the district championship trophy, a second place conference finish, and the reputation throughout the state as a hard-fighting, never-say-die team. Included among the 24 opponents were six teams who were rated among the top 20 teams in Oklahoma at the time we played them. The Devils entered the rugged Central State tournament at Edmond and advanced to the semi- finals before losing by five points to Bowlegs, the tourney champion. ln this tournament the Devils defeated Mustang and Mangum, two very highly-rated powers who were among the favorites to win the tournament. In the Regional tournament atLawton, Walters and Cyril staged one of the most thrilling games ever seen in Southwest Oklahoma. The powerful Cyril team, rated second best in the state, and came from behind and hit a bucket with 12 seconds left, to win the game 69-67. Gary Gardner was unanimously selected by the teammates to act as honorary team captain for the season. Gardner was an inspirational leader and led the team in scoring with a total of 340 points Coy Bridges', Don Nlinnich', for the season. Gardner and Bridges were named to the official all-conference team.
