lass Hlstury The class of 51 started on our long and hard Journey rn the year 1939 In the frrst grade we were members of the rhythm band The rest of our grade school was calm When we graduated from grade school xnto junlor Hlgh we were LH our seventh Heaven The f1rst slx weeks was spent xn try1ng to get used to the lockers changlng classes every hour and the rush rn between classes By the trme we were 1U the elght grade we thought we knew everythlng there was to know but soon found out we d1dn t The dlscovery of the class of 1951 was an accldent Four years ago early one mornlng on the erghth of September 1947 the faculty of Walters Hlgh School were stroll1ng almlessly through the corrxdors chattlng about the just end1ng vacat1on and wonderlng whether there would be any startllng changes ln thelr work durlng the comlng year Suddenly they caught a gllmpse of somethlng new and strange just lnslde the front door huddled together rn mute embarrassment and anxlety were the members of what became the class of 1951 Gently attemptlng to dlspel the fears of the strangers the faculty bade them enter and spent the next few weeks attemptrng to ga1n thelr conf1dence and frlendshlps The dlscovery hav1ng been reported to the ruler of the hlgh school Mr G0re our pr1nc1pal he recelved the news of th1s rennrkable 3CQU1S1tXOH to h1s terrxtory wlth marked dellght and a few m1Sg1V1DgS He examlned w1th 1nterest the trophxes presented by the strangers to thexr d1scoverers Among these trophles were report cards bearxng sxgns supposed to denote the degree of mental alertness possessed by the owner and to show hls POSS1b1l1t16S as a future Cltllen of the country The Freshmen became rnterested rn strange new exerclses called basket ball and football and atta1ned a sl1ght degree of prowess rn each At the end of the year a terrlble dxsaster befell the Freshmen called Flnal EX3m1D8t1OUS and ranks as one of the worst massrcres of the trme Wrth the comlng of the next September we recerved a new name because of our sklll ln acquxrxng the customs of the school we were renamed sophomores And now a strange th1ng happened rememberlng the scorn wrth whlch we had been regarded the prev1ous year we now adopted the same attltude toward the 1ncom1ng strangers who took The soclal functxons of thls perlod were dellghtful the Host xmportant be1ng serv1ng at the JUD1Of Senlor banquet and our sophomore plcnxc In the thlrd year owrng to an old educatxonal custom the sophonnres became Junxors and our promotlon made our sense of lmportance lncrease out of due proport1on Thls was the year of hard work and the dreaded ordeal of examlnatlons In our Junlor year we presented the play L1ttle Women We were hosts to the senxors ln the annual banquet Our theme was In the Southern Garden We ended our happy year the Junror prcnrc And now we come to the fourth and greatest year ln the hlstory of our class automatlcally became senrors 1U September All th1s was looked upon wrth frlendly amusement by the teachers explores who regarded the result of thelr four years of hard labor w1th rxghtful pr1de The soc1al events were of marked brllllance Those most worthy of note are The Senror play Hobo day Junlor Senlor banquet and last but not least our Senlor tr1p The ploneers of our class are Carol Ann Ruyle jane Wershon Deedrre Meyer Glenna Edgar Robert Berendzen Buddy Mowles Jo Nell Shephard Marlene Faulkner and Bruce Reed At the exp1rat1on of the four years the prxnclpal expressed hlmself as greatly pleased wlth the addltlons to hxs country and pronounced us all hxghly el1g1ble for admlsslon as c1t1zens By the way of approprlate celebrat1on a strange ceremony known as commencement was held Speeches were made for no partlcular reason songs were sung and scrolls called dlplomas s1gn1fy1ng the skllled and flnesse lt took to get one were grven to the senrors S Li 51 X I , . . . ! . . , , . , Y .
