Among these was a new head coach, Gyles Hall. The biggest obstacle however was that the team had only 26 players. No one gave them a chance. But these dedicated young men played their hearts out from game to game. They made the season a great one, a season that Walterboro fans will long remember. They earned respect with their performance against Summerville, who received the fight of their lives from the determined Bulldogs, but finally struggled to victory. The next week they literally shut down a very highly regarded Goose Creek team. They received a playoff bid by trouncing Wando in the Homecoming game, 28-0. In the first round they played Richland Northeast, again no one gave them a chance, but the mighty Bulldogs pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the year by defeatng Richland , one of the state’s top teams, 23-20. Then it was on to Dillon, who was tied as the state’s number one team. The Bulldogs were tough, but a strong second half gave Dillon a hard fought 21-13 victory, ending the Buldogs season. This football season may never be over however, because the Bulldogs of 1979 will long be remembered for their heroics. At the beginning of the season, no one believed in this small squad of 26 players. But by season end everyone knew why the Bulldogs were called the “Mighty 26”. Their grace and spirit moved through the students at WHS. They would always build enthusiasm before a bailgame, and would always keep the enthusiasm going throughout the game. Their acrobatic skills always kept the fans entertained. They had car washes and sponsored other activities to help themselves and their school. This was indeed, a good year for the cheerleaders. On a large scale we saw our country live through Watergate and the resignation of a president, Vietnam, the energy crisis and inflation. Back home in Colleton County, the major instrument of change was integration. Before 1970, the county had two high schools. One was Colleton High and the other was Walterboro High. Without warning, the law decreed that there be only one high school for all. At first there was a feeling of uneasiness, as sudden change forced people out of old attitudes and values. But out of this uneasiness came awareness and by the end of the decade, real progress. Gone forever was the purple and gold Wolverines of Colleton High and the red and black Wildcats of Walterboro High. Progress meant more rights and privileges for all. But the greatest achievement to come out of this era of change is better education for all. School has become a true learning place where people grow and experience life through a common desire to achieve common goals. In this way education brings about understanding and this in return helps us all as individuals to find answers in the changing world around us. Change was the word of the 70’s and will continue to be through the 80’s. Through change, we do not sit on our old values and ideas, and stagnate in the process, but climb out of the past and give hope to the future. 215 For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
