Mr. Young gives some final instructions before boarding the bus. 5TUDENT LIFE 21 ttm King and Queen of Hearts The traditional Queen of Hearts Contest was once again a big event at WHS. This year a new dimension was added to the contest as the first Parade of Queens led off the show. Next the nineteen contestants, Kathy Boensch, Connie Nesbitt, Joanne Frakes, Boo Boensch, Sami Fender, Paula Savage, Darlene Ulmer, Cathy Kirkland, Susie Nettles, Jackie Warren, Donna Lawton, Kay Beals, Tawana Dickerson, Edith Bright, Cheryl Maree, Julie Stephens, Susie Nettles, Ray Janice Deal, and Rachel Reed were introduced to judges Jeanie Aldridge, Bob Scott, and Darius McCarthy. While the judges voted for first the finalists and then the winner, entertainment was headed by the singing of Eva Farmer. Kirk Breland received one of a high school football player s highest honors by being named to the Shrine Bowl team. 2. The Daughters of the American Revolution named Emily Dodd Miss DAR on the basis of ability, character, and leadership. 26 STUDENT LIFE Progress 1. John Brown and Kenneth Frasier man the turntable of the Walterboro High Broadcasting Service (WHB5), sponsored by the Broadcasting Club. 2. The chess tournament sponsored by the NHS raised quite a bit of attention this year. The eventual winner was Chris Seip. 3. Mr. Gowdy poses with some of the FFA Club members who built the second place float in the Christmas parade. STUDFNT IIFE 27 Homecoming ’77 1. Mr. Jones crowns Linda Lawton as the Homecoming Queen. 2. Furman Scholars are selected on the basis of leadership, ability, and academic achievement. Furman Scholars are Chris Seip, Alice Bey, Connie Nesbitt, and Wayne Wilson. 2. Being named a South Carolina Governor's Scholar is one of a high school student's greatest honors. Each year 280 juniors and seniors from across South Carolina are selected for outstanding academic achievement. These students attend a six weeks college-level program at the College of Charleston. Governor's Scholars from WHS are Wayne Wilson, Russell Jones, Wayne Robertson, and Chris Seip. 3. Wofford Scholars must attain high academic standing. These individuals have the privilege to compete for special scholarships at Wofford College. Wofford Scholars are Emily Dodd, Jacob Teasdell, Connie Nesbitt, and Wayne Wilson. 30 STUDENT LIFE 1. (165-105) 38 STUDENT LIFE 1. Al Green is a popular performer, as shown by his high ranking in the WHS opinion polls. 2. These magazines were chosen to be our tavorites. 3. The majority of students said that Brother Jimmy has done a good job as President so far. 4. The Dallas Cowboys were particularly popular this year, as Tony Dorsett and Roger Staubach were picked as favorite sports personalities. STUDENT LIFE 39 ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ’78 p Annual Club The Annual Club strives to acquaint Juniors with all aspects of publishing a yearbook. The members must meet certain scholastic requirements. They learn to crop pictures, write captions, proofread, and draw layouts. Hopefully, the Annual Club members will be vital members on the 197 3-79 Pawprint staff. Mrs. Henderson is sponsor. Av-Lib Club The main objectives of the Av-I ib Club are to acquanit students with library services, resources, and procedures, to create wider interest in good books and to provide an opportunity for the development of leadership. Av-Lib members assist with circulation and publicity. Annual projects include improving the library, and a trip to Charleston. Officers are: President, Doris Gantt; V. Pres,, Juanita Farmer; Secretary, Lynn Haddock; Treasurer, Allen Jamison; Reporter, Juanita Farmer, Sponsors: Mrs, Godwin, Mrs, Muckenfuss . 42 STUDENT ACTIVITIES Broadcasting Club The Broadcasting Club is an organization for the purpose of promoting the field of broadcasting as a career choice. The Broadcasting Club has a program each Sunday at 1:30 over WALD, which includes news, sports, editorials, and other comedy and mystery features. Mr, Dreyer is the sponsor. Dance Club A newly organized club this year., the Modern Dance Club is composed of twenty young ladies who are interested in the basic movements of ballet and modern jazz. Classes are instructed by Mrs. Henderson, STUDENT ACTIVITIES 43 DE Club Distributive Education encourages group participation, leadership development, and career study. Some of members' activities are visiting D.E, Trading Council in Columbia and planning a field trip to South of the Border, Officers are: President, |eff Terry; Secretary, Linda Green; Treasurer, Kenneth Sanders. Sponsor: Mr, Jarvis. English Club The English Club was established this year with the focus on aiding nursery and elementary schools. Projects include making educational materials and producing informative skits. Officers are: President, ReDelma Washington, V. Pres,, Sonya Taylor; Secretary, Darlene Ulmer; Treasurer, Odessa Washington, Sponsor is Mrs, Crawford. 44 STUDENT ACTIVITIES Foreign Language Club The Foreign Language Club is composed of students taking French or Spanish who are interested in other languages and the cultures of foreign lands. FBLA The Future Business Leaders of America Club is a national organization for students enrolled in business subjects. This club's purpose is to prepare students with experience for their future in business. This club also gives a scholarship to a graduating senior who is furthering his education in business- officers are: President, Sandra Pinckney; V, Pres., Katurah Womble; Secretary, Lurether Gethers; Treasurer, Janet Spell. STUDENT ACTIVITIES 49 FFA The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is to promote cooperation, good citizenship, and agricultural leadership. This year's chapter entered a float in the Christmas parade and won second prize for its ingenuity and originality. Officers are: President, Ronald Magwood; V. Pres., Mark Broughton; Secretary, Melody Kemmis. Sponsor: Mr. Gowdy. FHA Future Homemakers of America is a national organization for students studying home economics in their junior or senior school year. The dub seeks to help individuals help improve personal, family, and community living. Officers are: President, Renee Rhodes; V. Pres., Althea Singleton; Secretary, Josephine Homes; Reporter, Patricia Washington. Sponsors: Mrs. Beach, Mrs. Talford. 50 i STUDENT ACTIVITIES fir; rim FT A The Future Teachers of America Club is organized with the aim of being exposed to the advantages and disadvantages of the teaching profession. The FTA was first founded at Walterboro High School by Mrs. Ruth Thomas. Some of the projects of the FI A include the annual Talent Show and the Teachers Appreciation Day. Members also visit local schools and plan an Easter Lgg Hunt for pre-school children. Officers are: President, Cynthia Floats; V. Pres., Karen Haskell; Secretary, Kathy Boensch; Treasurer, Kay Beals. Sponsor: Mrs. Hughes. Garden Club The Carden Club is a newly formed club organized by the Student Council to expand club programs to include students who are not involved in other club activities. Activities include varied programs on vegetable and flower gardening, speakers, and a trip to Middleton Place, the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States. Officers are: President, Cheryl Maree; V. Pres., Todd Washington; Secretary, Cathy Kirkland; Treasurer, Kenneth Sanders. Sponsor: Mrs. Barnes. STUDENT ACTIVITIES 51 Band of Blue 1. Four members of the Flag Corps participate in a performance. 2. Their instruments held high, the band present another sterling exposition. 3. The band members fall to the ground at the surprise conclusion of their final number. STUDENT ACTIVITIES ! 55 History Club The History Club centers around Americana of different periods of history. Activities include furniture refinishing, programs on antique collections, the sponsoring of an old-fashioned Christmas tree, and an annual walking tour of historic Charleston. Officers are: President, Jimmy Windham; V. Pres,, June O'Quinn; Secretary, Rhonda Stroble; Treasurer, Laura Braddock. Sponsor: Mrs. Barnes. Literary Club Membership in the Literary Club is limited tostudents who are enrolled in English IV and who have an average in English of 85. The club visits the Dock Street Theater in Charleston and engages in other activities to encourage interest in the literary world. Officers are: President, Wayne Wilson; V. Pres., Jacob Teasdell; Secretary, Gwendolyn Ford; Treasurer, Paula Jackson. Math Club The goals of the Math Club, which is in its first year of existence, are to stimulate interest in the field of mathematics and to form a math program to help students who need or want help in math. Activities of the club included speakers from the American Society for Microbiologists, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and slide presentations by various club members. Field trips were madeto the Francis Beidler Forest, the University of South Carolina, and local areas that were of interest to the club. Officers: President, Kenny Blakney; V. Pres., David Williams; Secretary, Renea Rhodes; Treasurer, Davy Williams. T I Club The objectives of the local Trade and Industrial Club are to increase understanding of modern industry and to help determine vocational interests. Activities include speakers from industry, visits to local industries, and observation of construction projects. Officers: President, Ray Janice Deal; V. Bus drivers play an important part i n the daily lives of most school children. Bus drivers accept a great responsibility in holding the lives of thousands of students in their hands. The 1977 78 bus drivers work together to protect their trust. 2. This driver hurries to avoid missing the bus. STUDENT ACTIVITIES 61 NHS The National Honor Society is Wallerboro High School's club for academically outstanding students. To qualify for membership, a person must have an overall average of 90 in high school. The National Honor Society provides many services for our school including the morning devotion, posting the honor roll, and coordinating the National Honor Society Installation. It also gives an annual scholarship to one of its members through funds raised by raffles. 1. Members of the National Honor Society are Emily Dodd (Pres.), Chris Seip (V. Pres.), Alice Bey (Sec.), Connie Nesbitt (Treas.), Belinda Carter, Stephen Lyons, Wayne Wilson, Wayne Robertson, Gregg Adams and Brett Hughes. 2.
