1. The WHS Band of Blue outdid themselves this year with top ratings in every competition. 2. During the band’s performance at a football game, John Smoak plays his solo guarded by rifle girls Merlene Drawdy, Renee Maree, Robin Gerideau, and Marie Siegler. 3. WHS band director Mr. Bill Young and assistant director Mr. Randy Pruett certainly are proud of the accomplishments of their Band of Blue. 4. Drum Majors for the mighty Band of Blue are Mathias Chaplin and Kim Lommen. 5. Practicing for a performance, Ricky Harrison and Jesseca Fields play along with the band. STUDENT ACTIVITIES 19

Band of Blue Highlights August 9 — preseason band practice began Sept. 10-Nov. 5 — band participated at football games Sept. 25 — participated in Music in Motion Festival in Barnwell, S.C. Oct. 16 — placed 2nd in Coastal Carolina contest in Charleston, S.C. Oct. 23 — received superior rating at Southern States Marching contest in Camden, S.C. Oct. 30 — received a superior rating at the South Carolina State Marching contest in Columbia, S.C. Nov. 3 — Walterboro City Council proclaimed November 3rd “Band of Blue Day” Jan. 8 — Radio-a-thon raised over $6,200 to send Band of Blue to Washington, D.C., to participate as a route band in the Inaugural Parade for Jimmy Carter. 20 STUDENT ACTIVITIES
