As the season con- tinued, the spirit decreased and many players left the team. Because of their apathy, the team suffered many defeats, but the loyal players that remained had a strong determination. The season ended with a glorious victory. 91 Girls Basketball Team The girls basketball team displayed cooperation and a desire to win the entire season, nevertheless, the team was only fortunate to win three games. The girls played against some tough teams, and the scores did not reveal the whole story of the game. No matter what the outcome of the game — win or lose — our girls' basketball team kept their Bulldog spirit. 92 Displays Spirit and Togetherness 93 Batter Up, Bulldogs! This year's baseball season got off to a good start with a large number of boys trying out for the team. Several old players returned to the team, but many new faces were seen on the field. These new faces seemed to be just what the team needed for a suc- cessful season. Each member of the team always did his best — whether at practice or in the game. The hard work made this season one to remember. 94 Speed-The Key Factor for Track The track team displayed a tremendous amount of physical ability this year. The scores of meets exemplified this. Every member of the team spent much of his time in order to form a winning team. Time, practice, determination, and cooperation have been the main factors in achieving this goal. Each year this sport gains more fans and plays an important role in the school s athletic program. 95 Coaches’ Corner 96 Pom Pom Girls Stir Excitement at WHS 97 Cheerleaders Shake-up School Spirit 99 100 Junior Class Officers: left lo right; Cathy Bodison, president; Pat Dawson, treasurer, Cece i Mitchell, secretary; Nathaniel Gant, vice-president Billy Ackerman Nina Ackerman Audrey Aiken James Aiken Kathy Altman Sheila Ancrum Karen Bailey Billy Baldwin Richard Baldwin Bonnie Bales Julie Barker Eliza Barnes 102 Oliver Barnes Kathy Barry Jeffrey Bartley Sheree Barton Glen Barwlck Steve Bazzle Johnny Beach Andy Bell Florence Bell Dianne Bellinger Paul Benton Randy Benton Terry Benton Lewis Bishop Kay Boatwright Cathy Bod i son Cynthia Bodison Stephanie Bodison Debbie Booth Louvenia Boughes Charles Bowers Bill Breland James Bridge Malissa Brisbon 103 Jeanette Brooks Adime Brown Benjamin Brown Herman Brown Rodney Brown Sharon Brown Shelia Brown Vivian Brown Eston Bryan Kenny Bunton Linda Bunton Bob Burch Charles Burgess Leroy Burgess Cynthia D. All of the power and authority of the council is delegated by the principal. A successful Student Council is an active one. The basic objective is to promote the general welfare of our school. It also strives to develop democratic leadership qualities and tine char- acter traits. In the early part of November 1972 the Stu- dent Council held a workshop to examine Its operations and to inform representatives and alternates of their responsibilities. The W.H.S,Student Council is an active orga- nization. It works continuously to improve the school by encouraging student involvement in- stead of student apathy, Members Herbert Simmons, President; Billy Stanfield, Vice-President; Charla McLauchlin, Secretary: Susie Coggins, Trea- sure!; Mrs. Margaret Lytchfield, Advisor; Rose Marie Bolds, Chester Brown, Mary Donaldson, Minnie Frazier, Solomon Green, Ray Johnson, Angelelte Mitchell, Karen Roberts, Kenneth Simmons, Kitsy Stratton, Brenda Williams. The tears shed over a missing or a ruined picture? The obscene phrase said under the breath at mistakes? The obscene phrases not said under the breath? For all of these are part of the Walterboro High Paw Print. Work on the yearbook begins in the summer with a workshop at Furman University and con- tinues until the final reading of the proofs in late March and early April. In fact, the pressure never lifts until May when the book comes out. An annual publicizes a school, and the Paw Print has attempted to do just that. It has tried to present you with some reflections of 1972-73 at Walterboro High School. Members: Rudy Williams, Cassandra Hicks. Cindy Westbury, Editor; Dianne Leonard, Business Manager. The staff also tries to bring humor and entertainment to the paper. This is accomplish- ed through editorials, special articles, and other items of amusement. The Bulldog Staff puts much hard work into every edition of The Bulldog. Articles must be written and typed, the pictures must be drawn, and the copy must be laid out and sent to the press for publication. The student body is asked to express themselves through the suggestion box. 130 1 Nell Rose Hoff, Editor 2 Mrs. Bernice Manigo. Advisor Records the News Members: Bruce Krajeski. The chorus members at Walterboro and Colleton join together to present two concerts a year. The one at Christmas is a gift to our school and community. The other is the fund-raising spring concert. There is much time and hard work put into this program, but the pride of doing a good job is worth the effort The spirit and excitement which the Walterboro High School Chorus brings to our school is quite an asset in our day to day work. 133 l Student Directors: John Welch and Jennifer Peters 2 Mrs. Dorothy Mae Buckner, Director Busy Year for W.H.S. Band For the Walterboro High School Band, the year 1972- 73 could best be described as a year of travel. This organization traveled over 1500 miles to football games, band contests, and parades throughout the state. The high point for the marching band came on the weekend of October 6th and 7th when the band mem- bers boarded a Greyhound bus which would take them to a football game in Greenville on Friday night, an over- night stay in Greenwood, and on to Abbeville to partici- pate for the first time in the Southeastern Marching Band Contest. The band received many fine comments on this trip and was judged “Second Place in Class1' at the contest. They were in competition with twenty other bands at this event and placed third in the overall competition. This is a trip that the students will not soon forget The band also participated in the Southern States Band Festival in Camden, where they received a trophy and a rating of Excellent. In the spring, eight members of the band were selected to the Eastern Region Band while one member was chosen to participate in the All-State Band The Concert Band presented two formal concerts, the Pops Concert in March and the Spring Concert in May. 135 National Honor Society Displays Achievement Being selected as a member of the National Honor Society is one of the greatest honors a stu- dent receives at W.H.S. Students who qualify for membership must display good scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The National Honor Society members set excel- lent examples for others who may follow in their paths. They render any service they can to the school, always maintaining their four outstanding qualities. Where do we go from here? Yesterday’s tomorrow is today, but tomorrow never comes. The end? No, we’ve only just begun to live. We, the Paw Print staff of 1973, in concluding say that “This is the Reflections of the Times.” Yes, these are the Times . . . make them what you will ... but keep them moving.
