Half-dreaming, we will relive that special night, Remember that special person, that special award, And then in the cob-webbed attics of our minds We will reminisce over each faded ribbon, Each yellowed invitation, and half-melted candle. We’ll run a finger over a dust-covered trophy And smile to think that we were ever so young, So vibrant, and so full of life. Those special events are to keep forever And to warm our hearts on lonely, rainy days. 34 35 Homecoming 1970 - 71 36 Cage The Rams!! High-Stepping Seniors! 37 The Bulldog — by Bridgette and Cindy. To develop a love for humanity And to feel that we are contributing something To each other and to our fellow man Are essential to a well-rounded life. We realize that we are the leaders of tomorrow And that only together can we make our dreams come true. 50 51 Student Council Student Council: Initiates Leadership and Prestige The Student Council is an organization of students, elected by students, to serve as their official representatives in all mat- ters of concern to the entire school. It pro- vides a medium through which student opinion may be heard and a forum for the consideration of common school problems. It becomes, in reality, a laboratory of citizenship by doing the things which a good citizen does. It provides a training ground for leaders and followers. It acts as a clearing house for most stu- dent activities, and attempts to build school spirit and school morale. Ralph Moultrie, Chris Hawes, Co-Presidents 52 Gayle Beeson William J. Four members of the staff attended a week of lectures and labs and came home with a jumble of different impressions to unrav- el. With the advice and encouragement they re- ceived, the staff began to create a yearbook which would best depict life at Walterboro High School and be unique as well. It is one of the sources through which the student body can express their ideas by writing to the editor or by writing editorials. Our newspaper is affiliated with Quill and Scroll and with the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association. Journalism refers both to practices and pro- cedures in preparing journals; therefore, the Bulldog Staff members are constantly reminded of this fact: “True ease in writing comes from art, not chance.” Celeste Coker, Editor 56 Creative Editor ............. The members of the Chorus sing songs ranging from classical Beethoven to modern Simon and Garfunkel. All the members learn the basic fundamentals of music which prove to be very useful. This year the Glee Club participated in the tree-lighting ceremony at City Hall in November and gave its annual Christmas program. The highlight of the year for the chorus is its spring concert. This production involves much hard work and many nights of practice. The performance given is always delightful. The joy and spirit the W.H.S. Chorus brings to every school day is a unique contribution to Walterboro High School. Mrs. Dorothy Mae Buckner, Director Gail Tumbleston, Accompanist 58 Lydia Staton, Jimmy Williamson, Student Directors 59 Band Pride9 Practice, Perfection, and Performance While most students were still enjoying their summer vacation or completing summer jobs, members of the Walterboro Marching Bulldog Band were hard at work preparing for the up- coming football season. The band members held their first meeting August 10, and worked from three to four hours a day until the opening of school. After school started, these band stu- dents could be seen on the practice field until 4:30 or 5:00 o’clock each afternoon preparing for their halftime performances at Walterboro football games. During the fall, the band performed at eight football games and two “pep” rallies. After football season the “Marching Bulldogs” par- ticipated in Christmas parades in Beaufort, Hampton, and Walterboro. The highlight of the year came on October 24 when the band competed with 36 other high school bands from North and South Carolina at the Southern States Marching Festival, which was held in Camden. The Marching Bulldog Band brought home a trophy for their perform- ance at this event. This was the first trophy won by the Walterboro Band in many years. The band gave another outstanding performance at the South Carolina Marching Band Champion- ships held in Columbia on October 31. Later in the year, several Walterboro band students were selected to participate in the South Carolina All-State Band Clinic held on January 29 through January 31 at Furman Uni- versity. The All-State Band is made up of out- standing students from throughout South Caro- lina. In the spring, the Walterboro High School Concert Band was formed. 60 Mem bers: Ronnie Morris Archie Ackerman Debbie Myers Larry Benton Mack Padgett Herbert Bodison Cheryl Reese Gregory Bomar Joel Reese Jerome Bomar Joe Rogers Wyndell Bowman Herbert Simmons Myra Breland Jolan Smoak James Brooks Eddie Thompson Arnold Bryant Glenn Timmerman, Band Captain Jon Coggins Rhonda Walfield Jeff Cothran Jay Welch June Lynn Chaltraw Leroy White Gail Elkins Ann Hogan, Drum Major Robert Fralick Color Guard Brock Heron Carolyn Crosby Arnold Holmes Carolyn Hiott Kelly Howe Harriett McDonald Michael Hutto Sharon O’Quinn Willie Koth Sandy Pellum Erwin Lewis Debra Pinckney Roger McCutchen Ruthie Pinckney H. National Honor Society Membership: A Privilege and a Responsibility Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nationally as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. Membership is, however, more than an honor; it carries with it a respon- sibility and should be considered the beginning of an obligation, not merely the successful cul- mination of an effort to achieve recognition and honor. Once selected for membership, a student is singled out. He should not only continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities which brought about his selection, but he should also exert a new influence to improve conditions about him and promote those qualities of Lead- ership, Character, Scholarship, and Service, for which the National Honor Society stands. The sea- son as a whole did not come out as well as some thought it would, ending with a 4-14 rec- ord. There were many high-points of excitement throughout the season, including many games that ended with only a one point difference. Great individual efforts by seniors; Edward Peters, Ralph Moultrie, and Jimmy Stewart ig- nited the enthusiasm of the spectators. These efforts paid off in that Edward Peters was chosen to represent our school on the All-Conference team. Ball, Ball - Whose got the ball? Jump, Ralph, Jump Pistol Pete fires his gun! Beginning with the Greeks many centuries ago, track has become an ever-expanding sport. Track players since the beginning of the sport have displayed outstanding physical abil- ity. This year the Walterboro High School track team is no exception. The track meets are very exciting and have varied entertainment consisting of: the discus throwing, pole-vaulting, relays, hurdles, high jump, broad jump, and the shot put. This year under the direction of Coach Wil- liams, our track team is planning to break old records and set new ones. The ambition to do this makes tract the action sport it is. Try - Struggle - Strain. Got to Run Faster, Boys! Jump A Little Higher, Bobby! We look at the outside With bright, innocent eyes, Feeling that there the grass is greener. We are faced with a new kind of freedom, That of choosing either To be an asset to our community Or a failure in our own eyes. Yes, the world is awesome; It will soon be ours to run, And we will be faced with decisions And new responsibilities, But we can be thankful, for we are blessed With the guidance of those Who have known the suffering of experience. And with all our human capacity, We must strive to make them proud. 102 LEFT TO RIGHT: Clarence Johnson, Vice-President; Deborah Bright, Secretary; Faye Jones, Treasurer; Daryl Mitchell, President. And yet they are still An intimate part of ourselves. For each friend and each experi- ence Is invaluable. Like a huge sun shining in the west, So must the days we spent togeth- er die And become silent revolving dreams. For time will pass And some of the names will go un- recalled But what they gave us is far more important; For at the end of it all Traces of the tears and laughter lin- ger. So it is even now In this last tribute to a year: A year that has reaped An abundance of love and learning for some, A mist of quiet solitude for others, For we will remember the good times; The times we thought life was beautiful And we will remember the bad times: The hours of lineliness, the days of searching. Some of us are leaving now, Turning our backs, yet not untouched - Not the same as we were when we first came, For our dreams have changed so many times We no longer recognize the ones we left behind. And as summer stretches itself out Lazily before us, We take one last look behind At the laughter, the love, the freedom, and the tears, But will remain to be shared By another class, another group of faces. 152 153 154 155 156 157 158 We would like to thank the faculty, the pa- trons, the students, and the staff for their coop- eration and help. With a very special thanks to our advisor, Mrs. Gerry Skardon, we would like to end a book as well as a successful year. We hope that we have captured some of the times and experiences which were meaningful to you, for a yearbook is a memory book and the memories of 1970-71 will be forever a part of us.
