But, we like to think because of all we have shared with you, that we will always occupy one small corner of your heart. You have given us so much; you laughed when we laughed, cried when we cried, worked when we worked, played when we played. You gave so freely of your advice and understand- ing, and you gave so unselfishly of your own time. Because of all of this, and because we love you — the class of Super Seventy takes pride in dedicating this LAIR to you— Mrs. Betty Jane Brown 3 , -•■ ■ -r -- •' ■ ■•£«¥ -, Vi - -.: ■% ’ mb ■dRfeffaas ' .-« Discovery .. is many things! Engineered by the football wizardry of new head coach Dick Covington and his competent staff, this year’s team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons ever, sporting an impressive record of 7-2-1. The most punishing setback to this year’s team was not delivered by a gridiron foe, but was dealt by the hand of Fate. Injuries struck many key players, such as Danny Litchfield, Jerry Davis, David Hayden, Jack Jones. Earl Sanders, and Frank Kinsey. Yet the Cat's still managed to have a winning season. Much of the Wildcats success was due to the hard work put in during the long hot days of summer and during football camp- This year’s team was not without its individual stars, however, as it placed five players on the All-Conference team and five on the All-District team — more than any other squad. It was also fortunate in having Tony Breland selected for the Shrine Bowl and Jimmy Williamson selected to both All-Conference teams. Also, the talent of newcomers Jerry Davis and Don Lee, who both moved from out of state, has helped the Wildcats. The team's good playing is a result of hard practice and teamwork. Under the direction of Coach Hum- phreys, the Wildcats have given the fans some exciting moments. The Wildcats come on the court ready to fight. Ronny Reid stretches for a basket. . So it goes for the Wildcat girls. The ream worked hard in practice and played with the desire to win in the true Wildcat spirit'—even when things got rough. Because of its action, girls' basketball is still growing in popularity at WH.S. Composed largely of younger players, the team, under the coaching of Coacn Sigman, is looking forward to a promising future. The Wildcat girts ended the season on a happy note by having Debby Griffith selected to the All-Conference Team. That, Debby, is what we call a basketball. Coach Marsha Hass led her girls’ through a season of hard work, rewarded with a good record. Al- though sometimes overlooked, our girls’ J.V. team is an important part of W.H.S. Girls’ track, a young sport at W.H.S., is still new to many students. Yet through their deter- mination and will to succeed, our girls’ track team has come a long way under the direction of Coach Marsha Hass. The season ended with the sending of four girls to the Junior Olympics in Knoxville, Tennessee. With added experience, the W.H.S. Girls1 Track Team is looking forward to an even more promising season next year. Above: Patsy Strickland hands the baton off to Betty Litchfield in the relay. The baseball team practiced hard every after- noon toward making the season a winning one. Their games occurred twice a week, with each one a thriller. The Walterboro High baseball team made itself an important part of the Athlet- ic Association through team work and devo- tion. The Cats were coached by our new coach, Mike Sigman. B9 The Lair Staff Records 1970 The Annual Staff has labored all year long to record the events which have taken place. Senior Work Day, held in November, provided entertainment for Seniors and funds for the staff. The production of the annual begins in early summer with a training camp for the Editor and Photographer. The entire staff did tentative lay- outs, and in September these were finalized into a complete layout. Since that time, the staff has worked to make this annual an accurate record of the events and people who made up W.H.S. in 1970. It is one of the means by which the individuals of the student body are able to express their ideas to the school by writing letters to the editor or by writ- ing editorials. The paper is a source of news for the student body. It attempts to present a full report on all the happenings around the school. In addition, the paper has a light, humo- rous side as it tells all the latest gossip and jokes. Finally the Wildcat gives the members of the journalism class a chance to see how a paper is published and to learn the art of writing for a paper. Kay Berry, Editor Left to Right. As a course in the educational curriculum, it offers the opportunity to learn musical fundamentals and to apply these into the discipline of a well-rounded school life. Also it provides the chance to expand one's appre- ciation of music and related arts. The enthusiastic spirit of the Glee Club is particularly shown in its two annual productions. The Christmas concert with its combination of religious and secular songs always enhances our local holiday mood and provides festive en- tertainment. Toward the end of the school year the entire community anxiously awaits the Spring concert. Its theme and content are al- ways a pleasant surprise. The members of the W.H.S. Chorus enjoy the hard work that goes into the daily sessions and especially their public performances. It is hoped that this choral participation may prove to be a distinctive contribution to the happiness, and mental and spiritual elevation of students who will go out to fill the needs of their communities. Even though 20 of the 40 playing members were from the Junior High School the band competed successfully with other high school bands at the marching band contests held in Orangeburg and Columbia. In the Orangeburg contest the Marching “Wildcat Band finished a strong fourth, coming only two points within placing third In the State Marching Contest in Columbia the band re- ceived an excellent rating in marching and playing, an outstanding showing considering that the Walterboro Band did not begin work until the first week of school. During the fall the band performed at 9 Wal- terboro football games, 4 pep rallies, and 4 Christmas parades. For the first time a “pep band played at Walterboro basketball games. In the spring many band students partici- pated in the Edisto Clinic Band and the Coastal Carolina Clinic Band. Several students also participated in the All-State Band held annually at Furman University. Also in the spring the band presented its annual spring concert and performed at graduation exercises. The Walterboro High School Biology Club had several projects during the year and were active participants in the March of Dimes. They were entertained by many guest speakers. In December the Biology Club sent six rep- resentatives to the Teenage Workshop at the University of South Carolina. There has been is- sued another call to competition — the call to compete in the “great race of faith. It is the desire of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to display the important role Christ plays in athletics. We are the disciples and have chosen to run the great race for faith. The F.C.A. members are representatives for Christ on and off the field of competition. “Run the great race of faith and take hold of eternal life. Belonging to FBLA is an honor that carries responsibilities as well as privileges. The FBLA of Walterboro High School, spon- sored by Mrs. Smith, undertook two main pro- jects this year. They made money by selling Tom-wat kits, to give a scholarship to a student who plans to continue his or her education in business. It is designed to supplement the regular instruction by providing opportuni- ties for training in leadership. Vocational edu- cation in agriculture is an integral part of our school program. Its function is to educate stu- dents in the science of modern agriculture. The training is designed to qualify students in a specific area. The projects of the Future Farmers of America this year were a calendar sale, a candy sale, and shop projects, including making equipment. Are our Future Farmers taking or selling the candy? President; Meg God win, Secretary. The Year: 1966 The Place: Walterboro High School The Time: 8:45 A. M. The People: The Class of 1970 That was it— the momentous occasion when the Class of 70 took that first giant step toward graduation. As Freshmen, we quickly learned that our inherited position was that of the low- est of the low,” but we were too busy really to care. Adjusting to schedules, finding class- rooms. adapting to new and strange subjects seemed to take all of our time, but we enjoyed it. It seemed to give us a new status to be able to say, “I go to Walterboro High School. Before we had time to realize it, our Freshman year was gone and our Sophomore year had arrived. We found that, with one year’s experi- ence under our belts, our position was raised slightly. Now we were the “lowly and could look with pitying superiority upon the new Freshmen. With cake sales and car washes we began the task of earning money for our Junior- Senior of the next year. And, with NEDT's, the long barrage of tests that would last for the next three years began. Junior year was here and we were halfway toour goal. The word was money and we worked constantly to make more and more for no Junior-Senior. Concession stands, Halloween Carnival, and the Junior Class play all came and passed, and our bank account grew. Then April arrived, and everyone worked feverishly to make our Junior-Senior the best ever; and we succeeded. We brought to life a lovely legend, and for one night Camelot was reborn. Senior year at last! After three years of antici- pation, we were number one. It was hard to comprehend at first, but not for long. Graduation invitations and robes had to be ordered early and doing this brought home the reality of grad- uation, only eight months away. Through the haze of work and fun, we have watched our graduation draw steadily nearer, and now it is almost upon us. Soon, we shall leave Walterboro High School, and it will be a sad occasion, for, in spite of our frequent gripes and complaints, we have come to love the ole place. WHS has prepared us as best she could for our roles in life, and now the rest is up to us. But she has given us more than just book learning ; she has led us to many discoveries about ourselves, about others, and about life. We are ready, and with this belief in mind, we say, ‘ Good-bye, WHS. A new decade. Like ail things finite, th s year has drawn to an end. But. like love, friend- ship and courage never ends. Our discoveries did not begin or end with this year. They began when we were born and will continue until we die. What we have achieved is an awareness of what we see and what we hear and of the people around us; an ability to see through the surface to the truth that lies beneath. Within the covers of this book is a record of that achievement and of our successes, our failures, our dreams, fostered and nourished at W.H.S. Each one came and fused with every other individual, and together we made up a living spirit that brought these brick buildings to life and made Walterboro High a force to be reck- oned with and respected — and most of all, loved. The love that has grown in us for our school will not die with our departure, but will forever remain in our hearts, keeping us warm. But even greater, it will enable us to extend warmth, friendship, and love to those we meet in the years to come. And that is the greatest Discovery of all.
