Introduced into high school we climbed onto a higher plateau which commanded the best that we could offer. No longer would assign- ments be repeated nor work poorly done be accepted; as freshmen we learned that in order to be a success in life we must have as a background a solid education. In high school we found the funda- mentals for a basic education; however, responsibility, teamwork, and leader- ship were stressed in equal importance. The leaders of today realize that for a better tomorrow, we, the leaders of the future, must be so experienced that whenever problems arise they can be handled rationally and efficiently. Becoming adjusted to a larger school memorizing schedules, and learning, where classes are all enhanced our aspirations. The newness of these daily rituals soon died and became the hum- drum of every day at school. As sophomores our class faced monetary problems which had to be overcome. Through Saturday car washes and bake sales our financial ratings began to rise. As Juniors we were granted more op- portunities which would enable us to use the knowledge and experience we had perfected. Highlights of our Junior year were the Halloween Carnival and the Junior-Senior. The latter which produced the fantasy of Somewhere My Love, a prom which will not soon be forgotten. As Seniors there is much that we need to impress on the underclassmen. Being a Senior is much more than just completing four years of high school, it carries with it the responsi- bility of leading the student body and setting an example which they will be proud to follow. High school, like a testing ground, prepared the mind and body. Our personalities, outlooks, and habits are molded and then re- shaped again that we might be the best individual possible. Now, having received the best training we face the realities of the world. We have learned in high school to meet each challenge calmly and with a determination that will enable us to overcome any obsta- cle that confronts us. With this as a conclusion, we say good-bye to Good Ole W. H. S. reluctantly. Old records were bro- ken: David Williamson scored more points in one season than any other back in the history of Walterboro High; the 1969 squad set a new high in points scored against any opponent. But the most amazing Occurrence was the resignation of head coach, Bobby” Strock. With the first kick-off, the '69 season pro- mised to be a repeat of '68, but after three quick victories the Cat's success was halted. Walterboro's hopes for a championship team became an unobtainable dream. The most anxiety was felt over the close games for- feited to rivals such as Summerville and Bishop England. It seemed that the odds were against the Cats continually, but still they managed to uphold the winning tradi- tion with a 5—4—1 season. That proved the adage, You can't keep a good team down.” This year's team also experienced other firsts for a Walterboro squad. A week's vaca- tion at Paris Island turned out not to be the fun and games some had anticipated. The Cats were also fortunate to make a trip to Florida to play Turkey Creek High School, which turned out to be a dream and a night- mare combined. Their successful season was the result of diligent practice and team co-operation. The team showed improve- ments over last year in both rebounding and shooting. The Cats hit the 100 mark for the first time in the new gym. They also gave the fans some exciting moments when they de- feated such rivals as Summerville, Garrett, and Bishop England. Under the direction of Coach Humphreys, the Wildcats have proven that they will be a winning team for years to come. Ronnie Reid — Forward Wayne Croft - Center 112 113 Girls' Basketball Girl's Varsity Basketball Team 1968—1969 The Walterboro High School girls' basket- ball team proved to be the best team WHS has had in quite a while. The girls had to adjust to new rules, but with a good deal of effort and desire they came out with a fine record. The climax of their season was the winning of the Lower AAA Conference Championship. Two of the team members, Julie Segura and Barbie Wixson, were select- ed to play on the all conference team. Girls' basketball is growing in popularity because of the team spirit and cooperation involved. Basketball is one game in which great skill is to be admired. That skill dis- played by our girls has proved to be more than enough for a winning team. 114 Girl's Starting Line-Up 115 Baseball Even before the basketball season is over, Walterboro High starts its outdoor activities by opening the baseball season. The baseball team practices every afternoon, working long and hard in order to make every season a winning one. Night baseball action takes place twice each week, with each game ex- celling the other. Through team work and devotion, the Walterboro High baseball team makes itself an important part of the Athle- tic Association. 116 Boys' Track One of the most popular spring sports at Walterboro High is track. Much diligence is displayed for the competition is keen. There are so many situations that make each meet exciting. Track is picking up more and more supporters. Almost everyone in the Walter- boro High community is beginning to under- stand the value of this sport. After seeing one meet, the spectator can hardly miss the others. Many records are set, and others are broken each season. Perhaps this makes track the action sport it is. 117 Girls' Track Girls' track is the newest addition to Wal- terboro High. The girls came a long way from the beginning of the season to the end. They showed a lot of determination, even when the going got rough. The season ended with a great event— the sending of three girls to the Junior Olympics. With growing enthusiasm for girls' track, the team is looking forward to an even bet- ter season next year. ww 118 Golf Golf is one of the newer additions to the athletic department at WHS. Although the team practices all year, the matches are held in the spring. The team competes with other high schools throughout the lower South Carolina area, Mr. Jack Carter has been a great help to the team. Coach Strock is the sponsor for the WHS golf team. 119 The 1969 Varsity Cheerleaders Alta Mae Marvin, Co-Head Cheerleader Sandra Ayers, Senior Cheerleader 121 Rosanne Harkey, Junior Cheerleader Linda Balish, Junior Cheerleader Junior Varsity Football Junior Varsity Football The Walterboro High School J. V. foot- ball team closed out the 1968 season with a winning record which is becoming typical of Wildcat teams. The J. V. football team is operated on the basis that young players will get experience in ball handling and football techniques before they are exposed to the Varsity level. It is the aim of the Athletic Department to have each individual as well prepared as he can possibly be, before the opening of football season. 122 Junior Varsity Basketball Overcoming a bad start with few victor- ies, the Walterboro High School J. V. basket- ball team acquired the experience and poise it needed to gather laurels. The young team staged a brilliant second half comeback to end the year with an overall winning record. 723 Junior Varsity Basketball Junior Varsity Basketball Junior Varsity Girl's Basketball The J. V. girls had a very good season as they finished this year with a wonderful vic- tory. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Alice Covington, the J. V s had a 8-0 record. This is the first season in which they have gone undefeated in some time. The J. V s have kept the WHS tradition of winning in the right spirit and have proven that next year will be even better. 124 125 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Features 126 127 128 Miss Mary Gail Kiser Miss Walterboro High School 129 Miss Mary Hutto Miss LAIR Miss Sandy Lemacks Miss Senior 130 131 Miss Brenda Thompson Miss Junior 132 Miss Becky Thompson Miss Sophomore 133 Miss Nancy Sasser Miss Freshman 134 Miss Alta Mae Marvin Senior Beauty Miss Sissy Ross Senior Beauty 135 Miss Judy Smith Senior Beauty Mr. LAIR David Williamson 136 Miss Judy Smith Homecoming Queen Homecoming Queen Miss Mary Gail Kiser, Attendant Miss Judy Smith, Queen Miss Sandy Lemacks, Attendant Mr, Billy Hair crowns 1968 Homecoming Queen. Even though this year in the life of our school is ending, there are many memories that will live on and help the life of Walterboro High to grow and expand even further. We have seen many advancements and improvements in our school, and we know bigger and bet- ter programs in academics, sports, and build- ing are soon to come. Even at its peak our Flame of Spirit was no more than the total of all the indivi- dual enthusiasm at WHS. The school com- munity — students and faculty alike — made this year great because of their confidence and love they have for this school. Although we cannot take with us every memory — we all can take one spark of our Flame of Spirit — to spread and share with all those we meet. And in the future — it may be this spark which enables us to bring people to- gether for another flame of love, courage, and honor. 151 Senior Directory BRUCE EDWARD ACKERMAN French Club 1, 2; Fellowship of Christian Athletes 3, 4; Interna- tional Relations 4; Basketball 1,2, 3, 4; Pep Club 3, 4; Wildcat 3.
