The freshman embarks upon the new experience with feelings of apprehension and restraint. The senior emerges with a deep sense of pride and accomplishment at the fulfillment of a long sought-after dream. The sounds and the faces of our school ore many, but taken together they make each of us what we are — youth with visions that will not grumble under cold reality but will turn into reality itself for the whole world to view. So today we at WHS must hang on to these golden dreams and true ideals, for this is what keeps us young. We must build fortresses around our hearts and guard our hopes from the bitterness of time. Then, time may rob us of our youth, but it can never steal away our happy, carefree memories — memories of WHS. To offer friendship without motive. To be happy and to share happiness, To give help without thought of reward. To defend that worth defending. To believe there is a prayer for every problem, an answer for every question, and a ladder for every climb . . . THE NATURE OF YOUTH BECAUSE WE ARE FRIENDS . . . The Agriculture Department tries to prepare its stu- dents for positions in the many fields of agriculture. These include farming, agricultural occupations, ag- ricultural sales and services, and preparation for the students who plan to further their education in one of the fine agricultural colleges or technical schools. Also, os a port of the department's work, adult classes are held for young farmers, and each year a twenty-hour course is offered in such areas os farm mechanics or farm management. HOME ECONOMICS Three years of home economics ore offered at WHS. The courses include work in the following areas; clothing and tetiles; child development; foods and nutrition; health; home management; housing, equipment, and furnishings; personal and family relationships. There are two active FHA chapters. Each year they elect a Miss F. H. A. 28 MUS C . .Befleving that music is a major factor in the well- rounded school life of all students, the WHS Music Deportment provides instruction in this field. With group and personal performances at concerts, football games, parades, and assemblies, the chorus and the band enhance the spirit of the American way of life and build cooperation and understanding for a richer and fuller experience on our campus. PHYSICAL EDUCATION ..Physical education is an integral part of the school curriculum. Physical, mental, and social skills, learned through physical activity, contribute to the develop- ment of good citizens for the community. COMMERCIAL ..Students of WHS may now receive a Commercial Diploma. Those planning to major in Office Occupations will select either a bookkeeping major or a steno- graphic major. Only students enrolled in one of the office occupations majors will be enrolled in the courses required. Courses in Personal Typing and Elective Book- keeping are offered as elective courses for students with other majors. 29 SENIORS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The fall of 1963 brought us into the high school community. Subjeci to ihe all-powerful will of upper- classmen, we struggled in adjusting to the rigors of a more advanced scholastic life. Still, even as freshmen we enjoyed some of the outstanding pleasures our school provides: the excite- ment of seeing Pip's great expectations fulfilled, the joy of reading Jess Stuart's homespun philosophy, the thrill of exploring the inner sanctums of the frog's di- gestive tract. Some were happy to see new faces at our school as we began the second year under an untried ad- ministration. 1964 was the great election year that stormed the country and brought fiery debate to our campus also. We were becoming in this period more a part of our school with the first attempts at fund- raising for the Junior-Senior. The junior year brought us into the mainstream of school activities as we worked tirelessly to assemble dimes and dollars at every home football game. While we toiled through the depths of Emerson and Thoreau, the months sped by. A historic junior vic- tory in the Powder Puff Game cheered our spirits throughout the solemn winter. In April came the ga- iety and color of the Junior-Senior, a vibrant display of Polynesian splendor and tropic beauty. After what seemed and age, September 1966 found us in the senior class. Under a new principal we assumed the posts of leadership in our school and pressed forward to the final battles of our academic campaign at WHS. The memorable scenes of triumph and failure we experienced here are now sacred memoriesf forever enshrined in our hearts. The friendships we formed, the teachers we loved, the loyalty we cultivated, the knowledge we gained, the times of joy, and the times of sorrow at the passing of a fellow student ore now a part of us. From our high school days we have learned to work harmoniously, to take pride in accomplishment, to endure defeat without yielding to it, to live with pur- pose and responsibility. Because we take these precious experiences and lessons with us, our years at Waiter- boro High School are not now behind us but only beginning. 32 SENIOR CLASS During his final year, each senior began fo realize ka1 WHS meant fo him. Attending the Homecoming tes? in'ties, taking the leadership in College Night, c rending the Junior-Senior as a guest, and finally arching down the aisle in cap and gown: these would c - ays be treasured memories. Graduation was anticipated with mixed emotions. Bach year had been fun as well as work, but as this ear ended, each senior knew that he would always are a special place in his heart for WHS. Looking forward to such things os their first Junior-Senior, the juniors worked madly on the Halloween Carnival, concession stands, ond class ploy. Being tapped into the Honor Society was the hope of many, although only eleven were selected. As in previous years, the top eight members were chosen to serve as Junior Marshals. RAYMOND GERALD BRUINS August 14, 1948 ■ March 10, 1967 Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendor in the grass, or glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind; In the primal sympathy Which having been must ever be; In the soothing thoughts that spring Out of human suffering; In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind. 14S THANK YOU! We, the Annual Staff of 1967, wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to the following: The administration and faculty for their co-operation, understanding, and patience. The student body for their many helpful suggestions, and co-operation. Mrs. Mary F. Parker for her never-ending assistance and understanding.
