PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS WALTERBORO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA Deborah Ross - Editor-in-Chief Sally Skardon - Business Manager Mrs. Mary Frances Parker - Sponsor ALMA MATER Angels guard our Alma Mater From the skies of blue; Guord and guide our footsteps ever, Firm and strong and true. We will e'er uphold thy standards Honor, love, and truth; Pledge our hearts, our hands, and voices, Loyalty and youth. Forward! Ever be our watchword, Conquer and prevail; Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, WHS all Hail! SCHOOL PRAYER . ay every thought we think today and everything we do and say Be worthy of the folks we love and worthy of our God above. Am en. WISDOM “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared with it.’ HONOR Honor is like the eye, which cannot suf- fer the least impurity without damage. It is a precious stone, the price of which is lessened by a single flaw.’ SCHOLARSHIP “He that would make real progress in knowledge, must dedicate his age os well as youth, the latter growth as well as the first fruits, at the altar of truth. FOREWORD What is WHS, what makes it different from any other school, what particular things go to make up WH$ in this particular year — these are the things the 1966 LAIR has tried to record, this year at school. The rush to classes, the thrill of winning the first home football game, the worry of what the first report card will show, the many hours spent on a research theme. College Boards, long homework assignments, scared new freshmen, brash sophomores, busy juniors, dignified and important seniors — these are the bits and pieces of our WHS kaleidoscope thot we have tried to record for your remembrance and reminiscence. Each facet of life at WHS — students, teachers, classes, extracurricular activities — has its own special place in making the kaleidoscope complete. All the pieces, when separate, are nothing; but when they arc put together, they make our school, unique and interesting. Each year is a new experience which can never be re- peated, and this 1966 LAIR is brought to you to help you remember and enjoy 1966 at WHS. A KALEIDOSCOPE OF ACTIVITY A school is such an ordinary thing, an everyday word, a seemingly simple and common part of life; yet its internal composition is Jntricate-not just a building, nor a faculty, nor simply a student body, but more than any of these, even morethan all of these put together. Vi suaMzea.kadei doscope-a pattern of tiny bits of color in ail sizes and shapes—each different from the other. When separate, each piece stands harsh and lonely, no interest. Yet, gather these solitary bits, arrange them in a pattern, and a picture of harmony ap pears. When assembled, each piece shares a little of its hue to enhance and complement the colors around it. They all blend to project a more meaningful image of complefeness Each piece has a relationship to onother-not even the smallest can be inconspicuously removed; for so dismembered, the picture loses its balance and beauty. Our school is a kaleidoscope-a never-ending but ever blending array of students, teachers, books, classes, organi- zations, tests, grades-all blending to create harmony, bal- ance, and most important, function. Each part is essential to the whole, and no one part rises above the others. Each person is a port of the whole. Like the many varied colors of a ka- leidoscope, each teacher, each student is different. His appearance, his be- liefs, hi s life aims are highly individual, never to be entirely duplicated-this is the way we were created. Yet, put these pieces of personality together, and the whole person emerges as a unit which becomes a vital part of a school. When students and teachers arrive at the campus in the early morning mist, they unite in an ultimate purpose. They come here to learn of others... to learn about themselves. Sharing wisdom, friendship, and love, they seek the knowledge of life. The organizations of WHS help to form the kaleidoscope—united they are a whole, coordinating their energies and harmonizing their desires. Each activity at WHS does its part and adds its color to the whole Each piece of color in the picture of our school shimmers in the light of success. Winning fpme end glory cannot be discarded for these efforts serve as meansof achieving sue cess. Once we have tasted of the ambrosia of accompli shment, we are forever striving to fill ourseives with its sweetness. This feeling of accomplishment stamps out all timidity and instills In us a warm certainty of util- izing our abilities and talents. Each year the scene shifts and new facets produce a new focus; but never is the purpose of each piece forgotten. The unity of the whole means more than the sum of its parts, yet the significance of the unit lives through the existence and necessity of each piece in the pattern. Ours is a symmetrically complete school ... a kaleidoscope of activity.
