An understanding of the past is a necessary compo- nent of the understanding of our present. With this in mind, in addition to textbook study, students learn from guest speakers, student speakers, and special current literature. Social studies courses at WHS include world history, civics, and Problems of Democracy. These courses teach the student not only the history of our world and nation, but also how our government is organized and how its purpose is carried out. If you happen to see an over-worked and under-paid looking being walking the corri- dors of Walterboro High, it's a fairly sure bet that it’s a member of the Student Coun- cil. Throughout the year the council mem- bers have carried upon strong shoulders, a stupendous load of leadership; and there are few who will deny that they have borne their burden well. Their deeds, which witness to the active spirit of the Student Council, are many and varied. They include publishing the student handbook, running elections, paying for the student phone, publicizing the Honor Roll, and making signs for the parking lot. The council's annual money-making projects are the Queen of Hearts contest and the paper- back book fairs. PRESIDENT'S CABINET: B. McMillan, S. Sanders, B. Phillips, B. Howell, B. Harkey, H.
