Firm and strong and true. We will e re uphold thy standards Honor, love, and truth; Pledge our hearts, our hands, and voices, Loyalty and youth. Forward! It is a precious stone, the price of which is lessened by a single flaw. Sck ofardh T He that would make real pro- gress in knowledge, must dedi- cate his age as well as youth, the latter growth as well as the first fruits, at the altar of truth. Testing is part of acquiring wisdom. 3 WHS Honor Roll 3 orewor J ‘To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. 11 This time, as we complete our high school years, is A TIME TO REMEMBER -- the fun we had studying out under the trees, watching basketball games in the new gym, participating in Glee Club concerts, athletics, and academic contests ... A TIME TO WEEP -- over the football games we lost, the unexpected crowns, and even a few failures .. . A TIME TO LAUGH -- about that cute joke, a silly mistake, at club initiations, at teachers corny jokes .. . A TIME TO KEEP SILENCE -- daydreaming, taking a test, reminiscing, at prayer . .. A TIME TO SPEAK --to others daily, when you know the answer, to make that long-dreaded but hopefully-antici- pated graduation speech ... A TIME TO GET — knowledge, awards, honors, the foundation for our future lives .. . A TIMIE TO LOSE --a game now and then, your cherished place in class rank, that lazy feeling in spring ., . This is one of the most important times of our lives. This is the time of planting our ambitions and aspirations. It is the time to build high ideals and goals for future times. To many, these years at Walterboro High School have been a time of happiness, success, honor, love, and excellence. To others, it has been a time of excessive W'ork and too much study. To all of us, it has been a wonderful time to remember. 4 !_ Jime to Remember © © 6 WHS empty Sunshine in the rain Jime to Cciu€ li . . „ What dainty cheerleaders L! Under Mr. Pettit’s direction and guidance, WHS has had a very suc- cessful year. 16 Mrs. Evelyn Reeves YValterboro High School Secretary The guidance department of WHS offers the experi- enced counseling -which is often necessary in our aca- demic and social lives. In addition to regular band rehearsals, individual lessons are offered. 19 Mr. Gerald Polk Band Director Come, blow your horn! Language began the first time sounds were used to convey ideas. Its growth and development since then is one of man's greatest achievements. English is a living thing, changing with the years. English at WHS changed this year as the students in advanced classes were required to do summer reading. Literature, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, paral- lel reading, and research reports help the student re- ceive a w'ell rounded knowledge of the English lan- guage. In addition to college preparatory English, Practical English and Business English are offered at WHS. Mrs. Mary Frances Parker is the head of the English Department. The Language Clubs of WHS also enliven students interests and promote und er standing. Mrs. Mary Frances Parker is the head of this department. Mrs. Margaret Lytchfield Mr. Sam Lytchfield Mr. Mike Lind ley Mr. Robert Hayes WHS students are inquisitive and eager to learn about everything from What makes grass green? to What is nuclear fission? To satisfy this thirst for knowledge the Science Department offers general science, psychology, biology, chemistry, and phy- sics. An understanding of the past is a necessary compo- nent of the understanding of our present. With this in mind, in addition to textbook study, students learn from guest speakers, student speakers, and special current literature. Social studies courses at WHS include world history, civics, and Problems of Democracy. Throughout the year the council mem- bers have carried upon strong shoulders, a stupendous load of leadership; and there are few who will deny that they have borne their burden well. Their deeds, which witness to the active spirit of the Student Council, are many and varied. They include publishing the student handbook, running elections, paying for the student phone, publicizing the Honor Roll, and making signs for the parking lot. The council's annual money-making projects are the Queen of Hearts contest and the paper- back book fairs. PRESIDENT'S CABINET: B. McMillan, S. Sanders, B. Phillips, B. Howell, B. Harkey, H. The Beta Club sponsors the morning devotions. Walterboro High's battalion of scholars falls into battle forma- tion in the continuous struggle against ignorance. With their shields of character, scholarship, and leadership, they drill in pre- paration for the day when each of them will meet the foe in earn- est. The Beta Club of WHS is proud to have drawn so many re- cruits into its ranks. Among the campaigns this year were the pie supper, the morning devotional, and the projects to raise money for the $100 scholar- ship to be given at graduation. Betas enjoy reading the Beta Journal. 40 Latin is studied to increase cultural knowledge and to form a building block which helps one understand the structures of various other languages. Other than the fact that this was the last year for several centuries which would be written upside down with no change of mean- ing, that year held no significance for us; we were freshmen. By mid-January of 1962 we had settled down and had passed through (or in some cases failed through) the mid-term examinations. For those of us who were taking biology it was about time to dissect our worms. None of us will ever forget the thrill, the excite ment, or the smell of this experiexice. Before long we had settled down for our struggle with Pip and his great expectations. By the time our last chapter summary was in, exams were on us again and our freshman year had ended. The tenth grade arrived and so did a new principal. We all gathered on the bleachers of the old stadium and entered into a new period for ourselves and for our school. It was about this time that our school entered into a program of rebuilding. The old stadium was torn down and replaced with the new one, the shop was replaced, and the vocational building was added to. During the tenth grade we began to raise money for the Junior-Senior with our first pro- ject, a car wash. In the eleventh grade things began to happen more quickly as we assumed more leader- ship of the school. Each home football gam e added to our treasury. For a while it seem- ed as though the football team might at last be headed for the conference championship, but it just wasn’t destined to be. As November began to fade the whole world stopped for four dark days when our presi- dent was killed in a brutal assassination. In March the Junior-Senior arrived and all was gay. The theme was a Southern plan- tation. It is a pity that the gladness of March could not have lasted through May. As the school year was coming to an end another Friday saw the deaths of two of our classmates, Howell Bailey and Charlie Adams. The following fall all were saddened by the death of Sandra Barber. For the last time a new school year began for us as the whole nation was in a state of excitement over the elections. We too did our part, as the marks left by our bumper stickers on Mrs. Guess1 blackboard will show for years. The new gym replaced tne une where for three years we had held our assemblies, the team again just missed a conference championship, and we once again changed princi- pals in our senior year. But more important we assumed the leadership of our school. The things which we had seen done by others for three years were now being done by us. Thus our high school days have passed. Most have been gay as they should be; some have been sad as they must be.
