George Price, III chmn., Mrs. Joe Dodd, and Mr. Jesse D. Boynton, Formal education in Colleton County dates back to the time when it was still a colony under England. Establishment o f the first actual school in Walter boro was one begun by Rev, J.B. van Dyke in 1827. It was called the Walterboro Academy, At different intervals schools sprang up in the Walterboro area. Many of these gradually discontinued while others remained. After the academy was de stroyed in the Cyclone of 1870,, another building w a s erected on the present site of the elementary school,, The present High School was built in 192 5. The cost of construction was $75000. Since this time many additional buildings have been added for adequate space and additional sub- jects. Walterbor o High School has and shall continue to produce citizens which prove its worth. 14 MR. R.A. MOBLEY District Superintendent MR. J. E. RINGER Principal Mrs. Grace G.
