President’s Cabinet 40 The beginning of the school year ’49-’50 saw the students of Walterboro High School organized under a new constitution ratified the previous spring. The organization, called the Students’ Governing Association, has two branches, the executive and the legislative. The executive branch consists of the president and his cabinet; the legislative branch is composed of the home-room representatives, elected by each class in school. All laws, resolutions, and projects adopted by the legislature are executed by the executive department. The president of the Association presided over assemblies and student body meetings; the vice-president presides over the legislature. Mrs. Ruth Thomas is sponsor. The group has learned choral music and presented programs in assembly and on the radio. They participated in the spring music festival in Orangeburg and in the local spring music concert. GIRLS’ GLEE C1IIB The Walterboro High Boys’ Glee Club is directed by Mr. Harold Hentz and accompanied by Miss Anita Owens. The group is in its second year and this year presented Christ- mas music for assembly and took part in several radio programs. The glee club also participated in the spring music concert. Jimmy Bailey served as president for 1949-50. BOYS’ GLEE GEM 52 The Senior Dancing Club is made up of senior high students who are interested in social dancing. The group meets twice a month and tries out all the latest dance steps in the gym. This year's President is Sonnya Hamilton and Edward Mitchell is Vice-President. The club sponsors are Mrs. Jack Von Lehe and Miss Rachel Livingston. daiciig cine TRAVEl CLUB The Travel Club in the Senior High School is sponsored for those students who are interested in “far away places”. The club has a com- mittee which selects movie films on travel to be shown at the meetings. The club officers are: Jessie Myers. President: Jim Smoak, Vice-Presi- dent and Mary Frances Annon. Carnes The Sportsman Club was created for boys interested in the sports world. The group meets for movies on football, baseball and other sports. Emphasis is placed on study- ing the state game laws. Cone The Distributors Club is composed of the Distributive Education class. The group plans programs that deal with the distribution and selling of goods to the public. The group this year helped to beautify the school grounds, built a tomato hot bed, built a boxing ring for the Athletic Association, and at- tended the State Fair. LeGrande The Future Business Leaders of America is a club sponsored for high school students planning to enter the business world upon graduation. This year the F.B.L.A. organized other such clubs in the county. 55 SPORTS Crisp autumn nights —the band on parade-cheer- leaders and “Go Wildcats”—football time at W. H. S.! Afternoon practice, the referee’s whistle -basketball games! Excitement, hoarse throats, victories and losses —a block W well earned. Walterboro—0 Beaufort—8 The “Wildcats” opened the '49 football season by winning a moral vic- tory over a strong Beaufort team. It was a close, hard-fought game, and could have gone either way. Craven, guard, and Avant, halfback, were outstanding for the “Cats.” Walterboro—0 St. Paul—13 In a rather dull game the “Wildcats” suffered their second defeat by the St. Paul “Pirates”. This also was a close game and could have gone either way, with the breaks making the difference.-Mole, center and captain, and Mitchell, end, sparked the “Cats”. Walterboro—7 Mullins—13 After allowing two quick touchdowns in the first quarter, the “Wildcats” settled down and stopped the Mullins “Auctioneers” cold, but could score only once themselves and tasted defeat for the third straight time. Fender, fullback, and Craven, guard, played stellar ball for the “Cats”. Walterboro—6 Bishop-England—0 The “Cats” upset the battling Bishops from Bishop-England in Johnson- Hagood Stadium, with Craven, guard, and Fender, back receiving the honors. Walterboro—27 St. George—0 For the Homecoming game, the hard-fighting “Wildcats” won over the St. George eleven. Both first and second strings played good ball. Walterboro—0 Lexington—7 The “Wildcats” visited Lexington only to lose a hard-fought battle in the last minutes. Bailey, end,and Avant, back, worried Lexington the most. The “Tigers” were no match for the “Cats’ and the outcome was never in doubt. Fender, quarterback, and fullback, and Mitchell, end, led the “Cats’ ” offense. Walterboro—27 Ridgeland—7 The “Wildcats” won their second straight victory of the season by walloping the Ridgeland “Tigers” 27-7. The “Cats” took command of the field from the opening gun and were never threatened. Hughes, halfback, Craven, guard, and Fender, fullback stood out for the “Cats”. Walterboro-—7 Summerville—27 The mighty Summerville “Green Wave”, Class B Champions of ’49, found themselves played on even terms for three and a half quarters by a much smaller Walterboro team. With four minutes left in the game, the score was 13-7 Summerville leading and the “Green Wave” first string playing the entire game. Fender, fullback, McCord, end, and Warren, tackle, played ex- cellent ball for the “Cats”. Walterboro—21 Greer—32 The “Wildcats” put on a surge in the last half that fell short of eleven points and Greer went on to win. Carrol Crosby, offensive tackle, and Fender, back, were outstanding. Walterboro—0 Carlisle—18 The “Wildcats” journeyed to Bamberg and lost to a fast Carlisle team. McCord, end, Drawdy, tackle, and Fender, back, excelled for the “Cats” Walterboro—7 Lexington—13 The “Wildcats” lost to a much heavier Lexington team for the Class A Championship. The Wild- cat quintet record is a little more impressive than that of the Sextet. The Wildcat girls while invad- ing the floor captured five thrilling games, dropped fourteen, and played one game to a tie. The boy basketeers hit the basket for a total of nine victories and eleven downfalls. The Sextet lost 6 games at home and lost 8 games away. They won 3 games at home while winning 2 away with the tie being played at home. The Wild- cat boys lost 6 games away and lost 5 at home. They took 4 games away and 5 games as the host. The scoring was as follows for the quintet first string this season: Craven took the high scoring honors for the season with 155 points; followed by Mitchell with 112; Bishop 102; Novit 72; and Fender 48. For the girls Tippins was high for this basketball season with 243 points; Saunders was right behind her with 177; and Lyons completed the Sexteet’s first string forwards with 110. The basketball teams next year will be without the services of 15 players, eight coming from the boys’ team and seven from the girls’ team. The Wildcat boys’ next year will go on the floor without Joe Bishop, Mitchell Novit, Joe Mole, Cecil Mur- daugh, Derrick Blocker, Wade Herring, Jim Bailey, and Billy Joe Thompson. The girls’ will lose Betty Jean Lake, Nevaida Lyons, Gladys Herndon, Barbara Beach, Mary Ann Sams, Rosie Lee Carney, and Janice Simmons.
