For the girls, Lowndes, Car- ter, McDaniel, and Sprott saw much service at forwards, while Floyd, Padgett, Ficken, Sanders, and Ramsey formed the guarding combination. For the boys, J. Hayden, Godwin, and Lindsay performed as forwards, with Padgett, Fishburne, and Glover covering the guard positions. H. Hayden and Sanders showed up at center. WILDCAT'S” FOOTBALL SEASON OF 1939-40 Although the Wildcats were severely handicapped for three games by losing the services of John L. Hayden, their ace back, and their Captain, Paul Padgett, they had a fairly successful season. In the line the defensive play of Berrien Sanders was very outstanding from time to time, and such stalwart tackles as Buddy Warren and Herbert Hayden were often seen smashing the enemy back to earth for heavy losses. Captain Paul Padgett, Co-Captain Harry Lee Cummings, Harding Fiske, Turner Maxcey were “hard rocks’’ in the middle of the line. On the other end Harold Rhoden snagged innumerable passes for gains of sev- eral yards. John L. Hayden’s running formed the spearhead of the Wildcat attack, and the defensive play by Edward Carter staved off potential touchdowns again and again. The strong arm of Jack Lindsay was severely felt by opposing teams repeatedly. Left to Right: Edward Strickland, Frankie Padgett, Fletcher Riddle, Campbell Henderson, John Pope Fishburne, Teddy Padgett, S. T. Elliott, sponsor. TENNIS TEAM The tennis team has played eight matches to date, winning three and losing five. This rather mediocre showing is due to the strong opposition encountered during the season now drawing to a close. The Wildcats, with little actual experience, fought hard and long throughout the year and did their best to uphold the school and its reputa- tion for Fine teams and outstanding sportsmanship. The members of the team are as follows: Campbell Henderson, No. 1, John Pope Fishburne, No. 2, Fletcher Riddle, No. 3, Frankie Padgett, No. 4, Teddy Padgett, No. 5, and Edward Strickland, No. 6. None of these men is to be graduated this year, and they are expected to form a strong nucleus for 1941 squad. The sponsor for the team was Spencer Elliott, grammar school principal. The season’s record is as follows: Walterboro 6 Walterboro 6 Walterboro 0 Walterboro 2 Walterboro 0 Walterboro 2 Walterboro 5 Walterboro 1 Beaufort ...................... 0 Orangeburg .................... 2 Porter ........................ 7 Porter ........................ 6 St. Paul ...................... 6 Charleston .................... 6 Orangeburg .................... 4 St. Paul ...................... 6 28
