GERTRUDE, ’72-’86 One hot summer day in 1972, an abandoned puppy was discovered by the cheerleaders. One of the girls fed the pup some sausage and biscuits. That was the beginn- ing of a very long pcople pet relationship. Gertrude was a very real part of WHS for over 14 years. When the bell rang for students to change classes, Gertrude would bark her opinion and then would monitor the halls. When she was younger, Gertrude was the companion of Mrs. Waldrep. As years went by and PE proved to be too stenuous, “Gertie” began following Mr. Waldrep. For many years, she was as much a part of Wellborn High School as the students or the teachers. Though not all the memories are thought to be good, The best one to think of is how united we stood. As a body we faced the trials of defeat Of how we would go on instead of retreat. We formed into joy as we confronted victory. We knew we could win, we just had to believe. We think of the friends as we remember the days — Promising each other to remember always. To the few we’ve lost and the many we’ve gained, To the good and the bad, healing and pain, We’re thankful in it all, it has helped us to be strong, For in the world we are to face, we will better belong — — Tammy Watson 100 . ..FACULTY. .FACULTY. .FACULTY.. . . . . All together, donors gave enough blood to place our school among the top donators in the area. We are very proud of those who cared enough to give blood. The Junior-Senior prom last year was held on May 3rd. The theme was “An Evening In The Tropics.” The Junior class did a wonderful job in displaying this theme. Gina Owens was crowned Queen, and Brian Moore was crowned King. 151 Tonya Mitchell Glen Newman Cheryl Ledbettcr Wade Pugh Dondeana Freeman Shon Lancaster Leslie Rhodes Alfie Chilton Kerri House Marc Riddle Kerri Payne Marty Smith Deanna Elkins Joe Pope Debbie Key Todd Bussey Dauphne Brunson Rodney Wooten Britt Mitchell JefTSmith Melissa Pauley Jay Aids Renee Hardy Tony Hamrick Kathy McFarland Tommy Key Shea Jcnnings Shannon Curry Nan Hamby Noel Dear Kim Mahan David Bannister Darrell Wilkerson Paula Smith “FORMAL FASHIONS IN 1986” The FHS fashion show, spon- sored by Michaels’ Cleaners of Jacksonville, was an instant success. Gowns ranged in styles, with se- quins and taffeta placing high on the list. Tuxedos were also featured, and the colors were bright. The “Miami Vice” look started the show off and the traditional Black tuxedo ended the show. The highlight of the show was a wedding gown, modeled by Carla Brackett. We greatly appreciate the Advanced Art students who submitted their artwork to us to use in the annual and regret that we were unable to include all of them. We extend a very special thank you to the teachers who were so understanding during deadlines and picture days. We also wish to thank the student body of Wellborn High School for their cooperation on picture days and while ordering annuals. Love, The 1987 Panther Tracks Staff This year’s Annual Staff had numerable experiences, good and bad, putting together this annual. Many hours of labor went into pro- ducing this book in the hopes of mak- ing it the best yet. This year, the Annual Staff entered a float in the Homecoming Parade and won first place. Fund raisers were successful, not only the amount of yearbooks sold, but also the large turnout for the Miss Panther Tracks Pageant. We would like to extend a warm “Thank You” to Mrs. Martin, who spent many hours working with the staff on the annual. Seventh Grade Hopes, Fears, and Dreams Corridors that seem to stretch for miles ... Teachers that looked like drill sergeants ... Lockers as hard to get into as Fort Knox . .. Homecoming Queen or “Most Popular” in Who’s Who .. . Football players rivaling your favorite rock stars ... All A’s on report cards .. . A DIFFERENT VIEW the Senior year Only one girl at a time can be Homecoming Queen ... There aren’t enough football players to go around ... Teachers become valued friends and at times allies ... Traffic jams are mild compared to the crowded corridors... A’s seldom materialize on report cards ... The Who’s Who Hall of Fame passed by ... Government officials could use the locker combinations for security purposes at Fort Knox . . . Decisions are made according to the view ... Starting life as young adults, our views will change many times. As good and bad decisions are made, the kaleidoscope of life will shift into focus, the view that “maturity” brings. When the going gets rough, remember those seventh grade dreams and The Different View of “maturity.” Kerri Payne 208 V - • •
