ED WADE The last of three children, he was born in April, 1923, in Coldwater, Alabama. He grew up in the Peaceburg Community, and attended Alexandria High School, where he served as captain of the “Squash” team. In 1942, he went into the Army and was on the 1944 Olympic Team for the Army. He has been married to the former Bernice Winn since 1947. They have three children. He is now retired from the Anniston Army Depot. He has been donating his services to Wellborn High School since before 1960. He attends most of the sports activities and is a great supporter. He recently helped in the building of the new concession stand. It is with sincere gratitude and heartfelt appreciation, that we, the Annual Staff of 1983 dedicate this 29th edition of the PANTHER TRACKS to MR. CHARLES EDWIN WADE, a man whose heart is at Wellborn High School. 195 On Thursday, January 20, it began to snow and snow and snow. Taking everyone by surprise, the snow was a much needed change. The student body was allowed the next day off. 196 Kim Hamby, Stephanie Waldrep, Kelly Cotton, and Jeromy Waldrep 197 Doshia 200 Paul “Bear” Bryant 1913-1983 After 25 years as head coach at the University of Alabama, Paul William Bryant stunned the sports world by announc- ing his retirement from coaching on December 15, 1982. With 323 victories, 6 national championships, and 3 times Coach of the Year, “Bear” Bryant decided it was time to step aside and make room for another man to lead the Tide. Then, on January 26, 1983, not only the sports world but the entire nation was shocked to hear of the final retirement of Coach Bryant. The world watched in disbelief as Paul William Bear’’ Bryant was carried from his beloved Universi- ty of Alabama campus at Tuscaloosa to his final resting place at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham. We, the staff of the 1983 PANTHER TRACKS, express our admiration and appreciation for the influence and achievements of Coach “Bear Bryant and hereby dedicate these two pages to his memory. An era ends, but the legend lives on. 202 203 In Remembrance of Timothy John Howard 1968-1982 Tanya Renee Waugh 1976-1982 In God’s plan of the universe there is no end. Still, it is known that our days on earth are numbered. We must work within this limited period in order that our lives will become a part of those lives of the loved ones that surround us. Tanya Waugh and Tim Howard achieved this earthly task during their years with us. They touched the lives and hearts of many others and have, therefore, become a part of them. For this reason, we at Wellborn will always be aware of and inspired by their presence as we encounter daily reminders of them that will endure forever. 207 Panther Patrons MRS.
