Cooper Director of Pupil Accounting Mr. Austin Deberry Supervisor of Transportation {pjancipal’d Dear Friends, It is my privilege as principal to put into writing for the record my thoughts concerning a pertinent problem of our day. I value this privilege rather highly; therefore, I ask for your attention as my thoughts are presented to you. Among the many things which could be discussed with you by me, I have chosen the word respect. Too many children today grow up without respect for their elders. The American father in our comic strips is a boob or worse. May I insert the word reverence here, for I feel that without respect there can be no reverence for anything. There are so many who do not re- spect God, so how can they respect His creation — Man. If I had one wish, it would be that each child would experience reverence. This experience of reverence is more often caught than thought; therefore, I plead for you as potential parents to provide opportunities for your children — while they are young — to learn that birth, ageing, and death are realities. Another tiling that concerns me is that children think so much about their rights and so little about their responsibilities. Increasingly, I protest that we should emphasize duties more and rights less. I would call attention to the Ten Commandments, which are forgotten so much these days. Honor your father and mother that your days may be long in the land which the Lord God hath given thee. I see many children express lack of honor to parents and God. Would you agree that this is part of our problem? We should honor and respect parents and elders because they are parents and elders. We should understand that allowances are not matters of rights, but rewards for one’s share of the chores. May I close by saying that we are all human and being in this category we make mistakes. However, we should strive for the day when the word respect is restored to our vocabulary, and it is truly a part of our way of life. Sincerely, Brad Stephens Principal WELLBORN HIGH ADMINISTRATORS Assistant Principal — Mr. Thomas E. Shamblee Principal — Mr. W. B.
