Many things have happened this year we shall never for- get. We find ourselves holding closely to our hearts the fond memories of this year at W. H. S. The 1958 PANTHER TRACKS is yours. You made it; we preserved it through word and picture. The Staff ADMINISTRATION FACULTY CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS FEATURES ATHLETICS ADVERTISERS DEDICATION To the senior teachers, Mr. Whitley and Mrs. McMinn, who have given us guidance and leadership during our past years at Wellborn, this, our second edition of the Panther Tracks is affectionately dedicated. County Board Member PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ... v K if itSkvfa ;,‘i %• V Now that you are graduated from high school, all eyes are turned in your direction. Will you further prepare yourself for one of the many vocations that are offered to you through fur- ther training, or has your formal education ended? To you who plan to further your education, may I say to you that you are living in one of the most opportune times since the dawn of civilization. Everyone in his respective field is begging for those who have properly prepared themselves. You can be just what you want to be, but it will take a lot of hard work. To you who have completed your formal education, we, your teachers, hope that you have better prepared yourselves to meet the needs through our efforts. We hope the tools, as limited as they be, do not rust but will ever have a luster from a constant use at your command. I wish the best to you and yours. O. A. Gardner .N A. r-' -: •- 'V ’V . V MRS. SENIOR CHORAL MR. PAUL ARLINE Director State Officers of Future Business Leaders of America Mark Smith, Marion Crossley, Leon Kennedy. School Winner of Jaycees Speaking Contest r School Winner of Betty Crocker Contest TONY CLARK PATSY WALKER CLASS PROPHECY Yesterday afternoon I was in my flower garden pulling weeds when I saw a forget- me-not. Feeling a little childish, I pulled the flower, sat down by my elm tree, and started pulling petals. When I pulled the first petal, something strange happened! I saw, through a mist. Congressman John Winn presenting a medal to Patsy Walker, the world's most famous homemaker. As I pulled another petal, I saw Marion Crossley singing, accompanied on the piano by Margaret Williams. Listening very intently to the opera were the very digni- fied ladies, Ann Bell and Loretta Free. Another petal was pulled; the president of Anniston National Bank, Jack Findley, was lending Dana O’Brien and Hellen Stancil money to set up a beauty shop. I also saw Milton Harris come into the bank loaded with money to deposit. I pulled the biggest petal on the flower; Martha Pope, Patsy Wood, and Sara Ford, all loomed before me with their same wittiness. They were swapping; they seemed to be enjoying the fun. In another scene, I saw Shirley Worthy, surrounded by all her suitors, each beg- ging her to marry him. Among those suitors, I thought I saw Stanley Bell, a successful businessman. When that scene faded away, I pulled another petal at random. I heard a lot of laughter; I opened my eyes and beheld Jerry Woodrow, a prosperous comedian. He was on television, station WZYT, owned by Carl Huckeba and Jerre Haynes. Their private secretary was June Starr. My attention was turned to another scene. I saw two preacher's wives at a church meeting. They were Bernice Jones and Gaynelle Miles. The two ladies seemed very happy in their roles as ministers' wives. The next petal brought to my eyes the Wellborn School. Larry Haynes was still driving a school bus. The teacher on bus duty wasjolene Vinson. In the office I saw Patricia Renfroe, the school secretary. Joan Skinner, the P. T. A. president, was hav- ing a conference with Mr. Gardner. I pulled another petal and saw an ambulance being driven by Russell Hurley, rushing to the hospital. At the emergency door, Doctor Donald Clement was waiting for the patient. Policeman Calvin Moore was there too. The next scene was in a forest. I saw forest ranger, Ray Finch, talking with two campers, Kaymond Pitts and Preston Higgins. There were only three petals left so I pulled the middle petal. Before me ap- peared several children, and some tired looking mothers, who were Frankie Lloyd, Christine Sellers, and the Ray wives, Bonnie and Barbara. CLASS PROPHECY (continued) The next petal presented a theater before me. The billboard read: In person, the real gone dancer, Harold Cole. As the theater door opened, I saw Clara Stacks taking up tickets. I recognized one of the ushers as Steve Estes. The sign on the door read, Manager, Ernest Brown; Assistant Manager, Colon Laney. As I looked around inside the lobby, I read one coming attraction that was interesting: Starting Monday - Eighty Minutes To The Moon, starring Jerry Bennett and Billy Shears. Somewhere I heard a band. I left the theater and outside, playing Anchors Away, was the Navy band. The drummer was Dicky Walker. Wayne Chandler, an ensign, was directing the band. The soloist for the band was Leon Kennedy. On the street corner, I saw three familiar faces, Earlene Gilbert, Estelle Gard- ner, and Martha Hayes. They were buying flowers from Mark Smith. I pulled the last petal and there confronted me, a cooking school. The teacher was Earl Bearden. One of the Students was Denny Broadwell. The school supervisor was Frances Magouyrk. In the next building was a singing school. The teacher was Larry Pendley, one of Broadway's best baritones. Two of his star pupils were Don Ponder and Albert Cline. Turning away from the buildings I saw Kenneth Lloyd strolling down the street. He had on overalls and a big plaid shirt. It appeared to me like he was a farmer and a successful one too! When that scene faded away, I stretched, got up, and looked around. Every- thing was as usual; I was in my own backyard. I laughed at myself for having such a silly dream; then I saw a torn forget-me-not in my hand! By WANDA WOOD CLASS POEM As days pass by, and years roll on. And we sail upon the sea of fate, We want the class we leave at Wellborn, To remember the Seniors of '58. Our number seems to be small. There is only sixty in all. But to us that's not a tragedy. Ask any sepior! You will see! Small in number but large in heart. Every senior does his part. When there's a task to be done, You can count on us, everyone. Higgins, Holmes, O'Brien, and Bell, Are good examples of the Wellborn male. Boys, like Estes, Lloyd and Ponder, Certainly can make you wonder! There is never a dull minute When you're around either Finch or Bennett. Our Romeo is none other than Pendley. We girls agree he certainly is friendly. When playing football, Pitts, Woodrow, and Moore, Can really make the opposition sore. In our class we have the Findley twins; You can tell them apart by their grins. Our quiet boys are Laney and Brown; They hardly make a sound. Clement, Cole, Smith, and Walker, Each of these is a talker! Kennedy, Chandler, Harris, and Winn, Will all one day be prominent men. Both of our Hayneses. Larry and Jerre, Always seem to be quite merry. Shears, Cline, and Huckeba, Are excellent students in P. E. Hurley and Broadwell are in the same ship. Another year of school and their lids will flip! CLASS POEM (continued) Our married girls are very gay; They are Lloyd, Sellers, Bonnie and Barbara Ray. Girls you never see mope, Are O’Brien, Worthy, Jones, and Pope. Ford is a noisy little gal; We like her noise ’cause she's our pal. Renfroe, Vinson, and also Stacks, Are girls wno never their study relax. You never have to go far To find girls like Stancill and Starr. Maguoyrk, Gilbert, and Free, Quiet students are these three. Hayes, Gardner, and Bell. Are really the quiet ones, you can tell. Crossley and Williams are good friends; Let's hope this friendship never ends. Miles and Walker is each a straight A student; There is no mistake, they are very prudent. Patsy Wood is a cheerful lass; She is very popular in the class. Girls like Skinner are hard to find; She is considerate, thoughtful, and kind. This sums up the class of '58, All of whom we hope will graduate! Now this poem I will end, While I'm still everybody's friend! Wanda Wood AS THE WORLD CHANGES MARK SMITH The history of the graduating class of Wellborn High School, year of 1958, is something like the history ol site world. It all began four years ago in the month of August, year of '54. The students were then classed as lowly freshmen. They were, in fact, the first class of freshmen for Wellborn High, since it was a new school at that time. I know that was a year of turmoil with a new school, new teachers, and new people and for the first time different teachers for almost all classes. Like all new things, they were a strange lot. Some shy, some bold, some undecided. All in all, it was a mixture of all kinds of personalities, We struggled through that freshman year with a few social occasions and much fun. The holidays came; we appreciated them at first, but we were certainly glad when they were over. Like the world, after it got settled, our sophomore year was better. We knew our way around, knew more people, and kuew the schedules. More social events were enjoyed. We had our first ban- quet. the Sophomore-Junior banquet. It was indeed a gala affair, arranged in the iibrary. Our sopho- more Year, we had our first football team, basketball team, and other competitive sports. We had our first annual, newspaper and clubs. As the world became mote mature and experienced during later years, so did the class of 57. Our Junior year was something tot the books. New peop.e, new teachers, new sckedu.es. a new foot- ball field, new clubs, and so many advances, we were like the golden, roaring twenties, foil of life. We vhug deeper to get the things we wanted to knew. v e had numerous sccial affairs which were topped ott by out first Junior-Senior Sun-jiet at the Y. NL.C. A. The Juhac Stencens Oecnesca made it seem as if we could dance all night to the heavenly music, no doubt some of us would have if we had been per- mitted. But, Alas! all good things must come to an end; regretfully, we allowed ourselves to be ush- ered away from the beautifully decorated ballroom and wandered toward home. This year our band rated superior in the state. The only band of Calhoun County to do so! The year closed too slowly it seemed. We wanted to get school over with for good. Vacation time came at last! All during vacation we kept saying the same thing, I'll be glad when I finish school. At last our Senior year arrived! We were the 'big wheels.” New faces were present, old ones missing; like periods of time, they dropped from the scene. It was a busy year from start to finish. Our rings came! O Glorious day. The thing we had wanted since third grade. We linallv had a class ring all our own. Next, we ordered cards, invitations, caps and gowns, diplomas, and other things necessary for graduation. Then it dawns; like the world of today, we were living a fast Ufe. Time was swiftly slipping away. Suddenly, we would like to halt time and remain as we are. We're not too much in favor of getting out anymore. It becomes sad when we think about it. But time doesn't stand still for mortal men. It seemed to slide by all too swiftly. The year was nearly gone. We had social affairs galore; but, somehow, there was a touch of sadness about them; we knew they would be our last. The cream of social life, the Junior-Senior Banquet came much too soon. What a masterpiece of decorations, beautiful music, happy people, and all that goes with the magic of fun. The cards had been exchanged, the invitations sent, the caps and gowns fitted, the diplomas signed. The time was here: Graduation. All the events, the BACCALAUREATE SERVICE, the COM- MENCEMENT ADDRESS, and finally the GRADUATION EXERCISES! We are given a DIPLOMA, and congratulated by Mr. Gardner, and other members of the faculty, along with friends and relatives. Like the world of tomorrow our future is uncertain, but we face it bravely. W e have received good training from start to finish at Wellborn. We are then leaders of tomorrow! How do I know all these things? Simple: I'm a Wellborn Senior! CLASS MOTTO: Do today as you would like to be remembered tomorrow. ALMA MATER WELLBORN HIGH SCHOOL, WELLBORN HIGH SCHOOL We’re so proud of you With your standards all before us To you we’ll be true. Gladly do we sing thy praises And of heroes tell. To stand up for the right Protect and keep thee ever bright. WELLBORN HIGH SCHOOL, WELLBORN HIGH SCHOOL We’re so proud of you And when from these halls we go, Our hearts are ever true.
