The curriculum emphasizes the uniqueness of all individuals, both patients and members of the health team, and involves human to human interpersonal rela- tionships utilizing tools for assessment of whole systems. The system terminology and theory behind nursing re- gards each individual as a whole, with vague distinctions between eight subsystems comprising the whole. Each subsystem includes biological as well as psychological and social set factors which affect the overall functioning of a human being. The eight subsystems are labeled: Nutritive, Eliminative, Affiliative, Reproductive, Resto- rative, Protective, Actuative, and Integrative. During the fall semester, the junior curriculum empha- sized nursing theory and application of communication techniques. This communication was done with relatively well individuals. During the spring semester, mild to moderate chronic stress was the topic of major concern. The students studied the individual in relation to his fam- ily: the individuals concerned being adults, obstetrics, family, and pediatric patients. The junior schedule allows for experience in a variety of situations. The trend in the new curriculum began with theory, proceeded to application of communication tech- niques with a well individual, and has terminated with application of theory, communication, and nursing knowledge in order to take care of individuals undergo- ing mild to moderate chronic stress. This new trend stresses the importance of realizing that all persons are unique.
