The finer points of en- lightment are approached through the galaxy of English courses. To wake up the late sleepers, soothe the nervous, bring back the dreamers, and to put everyone in an academic state of mind was the Herculean task of the Public Address announcers. Each morning found them trying to decipher the hieroglyphic messages submitted for broadcasting. Then came the tuning up of vocal chords, and at 9:00 a.m. they Went on. Our PA announcers do not merely talk-they elocute. After screening many loquacious aspirants, Mr. William Bennett chose those exhibiting the highest copia verborum. Finding all and any talk totally unnecessary, on the other hand, the audio-visual crew busied them- selves With operating for classes, movies and record- ings supplied with built-in vocalization. That unique tool which distinguishes human beings from all other forms of life-language- takes on different forms of expression in the branches of the English Department at Walter Johnson. A certain amount of creative Writing is required of each student in his English class, and some stu- dents Who possess special talent go beyond the call of classroom duty.
