To keep in training, the boys practice from summer on, until opposing team members are available as re- placements for the stuffed bags. In addition to gaining satisfaction from Winning, the players acquire experience in playing football, de- velop a sportsmanlike spirit, and increase their chances of making Varsity the next year. In the grand manner of Spartan teams of yore, the Football Varsity finished out the 1959 season with a dazzling three-game winning streak. A strong Suitland squad fell in upset as first vic- tims to the stampeding Spartans. Following an exciting week in which students tanked up on pep and school spirits were raised on high, the Spartans blasted arch-rival Bethesda with a 13-0 cementing before a wildly cheering home crowd. Again at home, the Green Machine pulverized Northwood in the season finale. In previous matches the Spartans were downed twice by Anacostia and Richard Montgomery, com- ing up for the third time only to lose a heartbreaker to High Point. Three succeeding losses to Blair, Bladensburg, and highly-ranked Wheaton were no great stimulant to student morale but afforded Coach J. Paul Miller and Assistants Ronald Law- head and James F. Kline the opportunity to whip the team into shape for late-season triumph. Hartley, R. Alexander, L. Muscatello, R. Farr: Third row: B. Hull, Coach Miller, J. Lytle, E. Larson, P. Bagwell, B. For the Spartans, any season is a victorious one if they manage to Beat the Barons V' This they did successfully early in the year, consid- erably heightening school spirit at Walter Johnson. Spectators viewed many exciting games as our Varsity pulled upsets over suburban Maryland's top teams. Although the Spartan cagers did not take the Bi-County League title this season, they' played good basketball, acting the role of spoilers. The Var- sity squad Won games which cost other teams their Bi-County standing. With several returning boys on the Varsity added to those now playing on the Junior Varsity, WJ should be tough competition next year.
